Our Lady of Mercy School Open House - This Afternoon

Our Lady of Mercy School will hold an Open House today, Sunday, February 21 from 1-3 pm at both locations: the Main Campus (grades 1-8) at 149 Neck Road in Madison, as well as the Early Childhood Center (PK3-Kindergarten) located at 39 Academy Street, also in Madison. Please join us and take a tour of the school, discuss the curriculum with the teachers, participate in classroom activities and demonstrations, check out the basketball game, and enjoy a beverage and snack. Stu-dents will receive a goody bag! This is a great opportunity to meet the Administration, Faculty,

and Staff, as well as current OLM parent and student ambassadors. We look forward to welcoming you! For ad-ditional information, please contact Maria Caserta, Director of Admissions, at 203-584-9170 or [email protected].

From the Pastor’s Desk….

Our Mass is organized into two main sections, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist,

bookended by the Introductory Rites and the Concluding Rites. The Introductory Rites consist of the Sign of

the Cross, Greeting, Penitential Act, Gloria (except during Lent and Advent) and the Collect or Opening Pray-

er. As soon as we begin Mass with the Sign of the Cross, we are already expressing our faith in the triune God

who is Father, Son and Spirit, and reminding ourselves once again of our baptism when we were bathed in

those transforming waters in the name of the Trinity. The formal greeting is based on several of St. Paul’s let-

ters in which he greets the community with “grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus

Christ.” Then we move into the Penitential Act which expresses our trust in the mercy of God. There are three

forms of the Penitential Act to choose from. The first, the Confiteor (I confess…) expressly confesses our sor-

row for our sins even as we place our trust in God’s mercy and asks the prayers of one another, the angels and

saints. A more simplified second form, “Have mercy on us O Lord, for we have sinned against you...” is also

an option. These two are followed by the three-part “Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy, Lord, have mercy”

commonly referred to as the “Kyrie” – the Greek word for “Lord” from which this part of the Mass is translat-

ed. This is the only part of the Mass that survived in its original Greek language even after the rest of the

Mass historically was translated into Latin, the language of our rite. Occasionally, as we are doing this Lent,

we may say or sing this text in the original Greek: “Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.” On Sundays,

especially during the Easter season, the Penitential Act may be replaced with a blessing and sprinkling of holy

water to recall our baptism.

Prayer Line We have a weekly list for those who need prayers. To request prayers or to receive the list via email, please

call Dede Collins (203-453-2306) or email [email protected].

Rice Bowls - Hungering to Give Back This week, CRS Rice Bowl takes us to Laos, where Hongkham is using her love of cooking to provide for her family and feed an entire school. How do we use our passions and gifts for the betterment of those we meet? Rice Bowls are available at the exits of the Church. Please take one.

RCIA News This Sunday during the 10:00 AM Mass, we celebrated the Penitential Rite for our RCIA candidates preparing for full communion with the Catholic Church: Keith

Ansaldo and Aaron Garcia. They will receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. The rite is celebrated in order to prepare the candidates

to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, to protect them against temptation, and to comfort all of us with the message of God’s mercy.

Please Take a Prayer Card Our prayers make a difference in the lives of our RCIA candidates. Would you be willing to remem-ber one of them in a more personal way? At Masses this weekend, you’ll notice baskets of prayer cards at all entrances. Please take a card and during Lent, recite the prayer for the RCIA person named on your card. Please join us as we continue to pray for our elect: Mari Ansaldo, Katie Arbuckle and Gary Arbuckle

who will be Baptized and receive sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil. And for our candi-dates: Keith Ansaldo and Aaron Garcia, who will receive the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation.

Ladies’ Night Out Ladies! Wouldn’t you like a night out just for women? Don’t you see a lot of nice women at church and wouldn’t you like to get to them better? We’re having a “Ladies’ Night Out” on Friday, March 4 from 7:00 - 9:30 PM in the Church Hall. We will get to know each other and later have a professional make-up specialist do a demonstration on one or two lucky attendees. This is our premier event and we need to test the waters to see how much interest there is in gathering for a purely social evening. Wine, soft drinks and appetizers will be served: a dona-

tion of $10 is asked. Numbers will be limited on this first event so please get your reservation in before March 1. They can be dropped off or mailed to St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford, CT 0643 or you can drop them off in the sacristy (Ballou’s side) after all Masses on the weekends of February 21 and 28. *****************************************************************************************

HomeFront - Help Needed For 25 years, St. George Parish has been hosting a HomeFront project in our community. HomeFront is a community-based, volunteer-driven home repair program that provides FREE repairs to low-income homeowners, thus enabling them to remain in their homes with an improved quality of life and an opportunity for parishioners to make a difference in the community.

We are looking for a captain to lead the efforts for this year’s project. It is just a few hours of your time, that will be very rewarding as you coordinate the efforts of a number of volunteers to make this project a reality. If you are interested in making a difference - please contact Harry Huben ([email protected]) or Cliff Bechtold ([email protected]).

New Parish Ministry Forming for Divorced/Separated Catholics

Based on the book Divorce and Beyond: A Workbook for Recovery and Healing this ministry is designed as a

peer-support group to help divorced Catholics rebuild confidence and move from a sense of emotional loss to

acceptance, healing, and forgiveness. It is important that divorced/separated Catholics feel welcome and support-

ed in their spiritual lives and in the sacramental life of the faith community of our Parish. Participants will have

an opportunity to share experiences, reflect, and pray in an atmosphere of trust, confidentiality and mutual sup-

port. One session will be reserved for a discussion of the Annulment process. The group is limited to 10 partici-

pants and will be closed to new applicants once the sessions begin. Cost is $10.00 for two books and materials.

For further information and the meeting schedule please contact parishioner/ministry facilitator, Betty Jane

Schiller, (475) 243-5944 or evenings (203) 453-9944.

Cooks and Bakers Needed We are in need of cooks and bakers for our quarterly dinner at the Amistad House in New Haven. The dinner is scheduled for Monday, March 14. If interested, please contact Carol Marra (203-457-9895).
