The Church of
Saint Aidanwith Saint George
Here is a guide to our
church
Christians meet here every week to worship
God.
We are members of the Church of
England, sometimes
called Anglicans.
This special table with
candlesticks is called the
altar. The bread and wine at
the Holy Communion service are placed
here. Sometimes this service is called the
Mass or the Eucharist.
Christians learn about God
through the teachings of
Jesus. This brass book stand, called the lectern, holds the
Gospel Book. Bible stories
about the life and teaching of Jesus are read during
the service.
During the service the
priest gives a talk to the
people. This is called the sermon.
He or she often stands on this special platform, called the pulpit. The sermon helps people understand the meaning of
the Bible story for their lives today.
We often sing songs and hymns
in the service.
Usually the organ is played for the songs but sometimes we use a keyboard and recorders for more informal services.
Baptisms take place at the font, where water is poured over the
head of the person being baptised. This large font is at the back of the
church. Above it is a painting showing
Jesus being baptised by John the Baptist. The
artist used Troopers Hill for the background!
Sometimes this smaller font at the front of the church is
used.
Nearby is a picture of St Aidan and a statue of St George, our patron saints. There is a stand where people can light
a candle when they say a prayer.
This is the stained glass window of the
Lady Chapel, which is like a little church on the side of the main
building.This chapel is
dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
You will find many pictures of the Virgin Mary here. The Lady Chapel is often used
for midweek services.
Christians believe that when he died on the Cross, Jesus showed people how very much
God loves them.
There are many crosses in the church!
There are many
images of Jesus in the church.
They help us think about who Jesus was and
about his life and
teaching.
Banners are usedto decorate the church and are
sometimes carried
in processions.
These show the Virgin
Mary, St Aidan and
St George.
At Easter we celebrate the
Resurrection of Jesus. This
special candle is lit at Easter.
Bread and wine from the Holy Communion
service are kept in this cupboard to be taken to sick people.
We hope you will come and visit us at
Saint Aidan with Saint George Church!
