CATHOLIC LEADERS REFLECT ON LIFE, WORK

OF EWTN FOUNDER MOTHER ANGELICA

By Catholic News Service

Mother Angelica "reflected the Gospel commission to go forth and make disciples of all nations" said

Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Kentucky, president of the U.S. bishops' conference.

"Like the best evangelists, she used the communications tools of her time to make this happen. She

displayed a unique capacity for mission and showed the world once again the vital contribution of women

religious."

Archbishop Kurtz was one of several Catholic leaders who took note of the March 27 death of Mother

Angelica, a Poor Clare of Perpetual Adoration, who founded the Eternal Word Television Network. Virtually

all of them, at one time or another, had appeared on EWTN.

"Her work, begun in the cloister, reached across the globe," Archbishop Kurtz said in a March 28

statement. "She was a convincing sign as to how even the humblest of beginnings can yield abundant fruit."

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia, who served on the EWTN board of directors for many

years, called Mother Angelica "a woman of extraordinary faith, intelligence, energy and determination." He

added he "saw firsthand the tremendously positive impact her work for Jesus Christ had on many millions of

people."

"Mother Angelica brought the truth and the love and the life of the Gospel of Jesus to so many people,

not only to our Catholic household of faith, but to many thousands of people who are not Catholic, in that

beautiful way she had of touching lives, bringing so many people into the Catholic faith," said Bishop Robert

J. Baker of Birmingham, Alabama, in whose diocese EWTN is located.

"Mother Angelica was a pioneer of the new evangelization before that term ever became popular," said

Msgr. Walter Rossi, rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in

Washington, the site of many Masses telecast live each year by EWTN.

"By providing religious programming, the Mass and devotions, first by television and now by every

form of communications media, Mother Angelica and EWTN proclaimed the message of the Gospel to mil-

lions of people throughout the world," he said.

"She untiringly exhorted all to pursue holiness by living with God in the present moment. We are

grateful for your prayers for this courageous daughter of the church," said Mother Dolores Marie, superior of

the Poor Clare Nuns of Perpetual Adoration of Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Hanceville, Alabama.

The monastery is north of the Birmingham suburb of Irondale, where EWTN has its headquarters.

"Her voice and her message will be with us for a long time," said a statement from Father Frank

Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, about Mother Angelica. "We have all lost a friend, a mentor, a

spiritual mother, a voice of conscience, and a source of laughter and encouragement."

ANNUAL LENTEN APPEAL

The Annual Lenten Appeal for the Eparchy of Our

Lady of Lebanon is taking place. The proceeds of

the appeal go towards assisting the formation of

future priests, new mission parishes, charities and

many other ministries in the Eparchy. Every family

is asked to participate in the Appeal at a level

which is meaningful for them. You can make your

donation with a check or credit card. We count on

your generosity and support to our Eparchy to

reach parish’s goal for this year’s Appeal of

$11,000.00.

PICTORIAL DIRECTORY

We are in the process of creating a new directory

for St. George parishioners. We have reserved

eight days in May to take these pictures. (May 10-

14, May 17-19). We will be signing up beginning

April 9-10th, 16/17,23/24, April 30/ May 1, May

7/8 after all liturgies. If you are unable to sign up

at the church , there will be a website available.

The photo sessions will include hours during the

day, night, and Saturday. We encourage full par-

ticipation by all parishioners. A complete and up-

dated directory is invaluable to all—especially to

our new parishioners. More information is coming.

For now, please save these dates on your calendar.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A special Thank you to all the parishioners and

friends who joined us during the Holy Week and

Easter celebrations. Thank you for all your sup-

port and gifts. I will keep you in my prayers.

parishioners. Thank you to those who have sent

their commitments; we are waiting for others. Your

pledge card helps us plan all the events throughout

the year. On the pledge card, you will find a time

and financial commitment estimate. Both are

needed in order for St. George to maintain a solid

foundation, to rise and to prosper in the eyes of

Our Lord. Please consider giving in both areas, fill

out your stewardship pledge to the best of your

abilities and return it by mail or via email to the

church office by April 30th, 2016. The pledge card

is available in the church foyer and at the church

office. Thank you for your commitment and

support to St. George.

CATHOLIC LEADERS REFLECT ON LIFE, WORK

OF EWTN FOUNDER MOTHER ANGELICA

By Catholic News Service;

(Continued from p. 2)

"Mother Angelica was a true media giant. She proved that the church belonged in the popular media

alongside the news, sports, and talk shows," said Franciscan Father Michael O. Sheridan, president of the

Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. The show "Franciscan University Presents," a roundtable

theology discussion, has been produced by the university for EWTN since 1993.

"She heeded the call of the Second Vatican Council to bring the Gospel message into contemporary

society. With humor and the occasional stern word, but always moved by a deep love of people, Mother An-

gelica faithfully conveyed the knowledge and love of God to Catholics, Christians, and nonbelievers alike,"

Father Sheridan added.

"Mother Angelica leaves behind a legacy of holiness and commitment to the new evangelization that

should inspire us all," said Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus.

"I was honored to know and be able to assist Mother Angelica during the early days of EWTN. Over

the years, that relationship grew, and today the Knights of Columbus and EWTN partner regularly on im-

portant projects. Mother Angelica was fearless, because she had God on her side," Anderson said. "She saw

what he needed her to do and she did it!"

"Mother Angelica touched the lives of countless people throughout the world by way of her landmark

evangelization at EWTN," said Boston Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley.

She also "lifted Catholic media presence to a new level of achievement, bringing the message of Christ

into the homes of people from all walks of life," he added.

“You see, God expects His people to do the ridiculous so He can do the miraculous.”

THE IMAGE OF THE DIVINE MERCY

Source: https://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/mercy/image.htm

The earliest element of the Devotion to the Divine Mercy revealed to St. Faustina was the Image. On

February 22nd, 1931 Jesus appeared to her with rays radiating from His heart and said,

Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus I trust in You. I desire that

this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and throughout the world. (Diary 47)

I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over its enemies

already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I myself will defend it as My own glory. (Diary 48)

I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That

vessel is this image with the signature: “Jesus, I trust in You.” (Diary 327)

The two rays denote Blood and Water. the pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous.

The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of

My tender mercy when My agonized heart was opened by a lance on the Cross. These rays shield souls from

the wrath of My Father. Happy is the one who dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay

hold of him. (Diary 299)

Not in the beauty of the color, nor of the brush, lies the greatness of this image, but in My grace.

(Diary 313)

By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My

mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no avail without works. (Diary 742)

In these texts the Church's doctrine on images, justification and grace are explained. First, by itself an

image is merely a painting, no matter how beautiful and expressive. Yet, it can point us the mysteries of the

faith and dispose us to grasp and receive what it represents, in this case the Divine Mercy. It is thus a vessel,

not the source, a reminder, not the reality. The reality is the merciful fountain of grace flowing from the

pierced Heart of Christ on the Cross, and flowing out visibly to represent the visible, that is the sacramental,

signs of grace, Baptism and Eucharist, standing for all the sacraments of the Church. Thus, St. John in his first

letter insists on the presence of the invisible with the visible, the Spirit with the water and the Blood.

The image also reminds us that salvation is not just by faith, but by works of charity also. It takes faith to

see and believe in what the Image signifies, Divine Mercy poured out from Christ upon the Cross, but it takes

mercy, love going beyond the strict requirements of justice, in order to draw down mercy on oneself. "Forgive

us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us" (Mt 6:12) and "the measure with which you measure will

be measured out to you" (Mt 7:2) The Image of the pierced side of Christ pouring out blood and water reminds

us that the Cross, love in action, is the price of mercy. "As I have loved you so also should you love one

another." (Jn 13:34)
