From the Pastor’s Desk…

May the Month of Mary

I remember as a child, my mother placing fresh flowers each day before the little statue of Mary she kept on her bedroom dresser. Whether they be forsythia, tree blossoms, irises or lily of the valley (all of which grew in our yard), Mary always had fresh flowers during the month of May. Why do we honor Mary during May? Many of our Christian customs have roots in preChristian celebrations. As the Christian faith was taught to peoples of different cultures, missionaries often took their local customs and connected them to Christian belief. In ancient Greece and Rome, the goddesses of fertility and blossoms were honored during the month of May as springtime brought fertility and new life. Early Christians saw in Mary, source of the life of Jesus our Savior and the one who gave birth to the Church, a Christian translation of their former pagan be-liefs. Instead of adorning images of Artemis the Greek goddess of fertility or Flora, the Roman goddess of blossoms, with garlands and wreaths of flowers, the custom developed to honor Mary with flowers.

May devotions to Mary became more formalized by St. Philip Neri in the 16th century who began the custom of decorating church statues of the Virgin with spring flowers. Annibale Dionisi, an Italian Jesuit pro-posed that the entire month be dedicated to devotion to Mary. May processions and the crowning of Mary soon became very popular among the faithful, as well as setting up a May altar in churches and even in homes to honor the Blessed Mother. In 1945, Pope Pius XII solidified May as a Marian month after establishing the feast of the Queenship of Mary on May 31st. After the Second Vatican Council, this feast was moved to Au-gust 22, while May 31st became the feast of the Visitation of Mary. Even Mother’s Day, which only began in this last century and is now primarily a secular holiday, owes its place in May to the custom of honoring the motherhood of Mary during this month. Like October, the month of the Holy Rosary,

May is a very appropriate time to show special honor to Mary, whom Jesus gave to the Church as our mother when he entrusted Mary to the care of John, the beloved disciple, at the foot of the cross and in turn entrusted John to Mary (Jn. 19:2627). Perhaps you might consider creating a small prayer space in your home with an image or statue of Mary as a focal point during May. Then take time to pray the rosary or other Marian devotions during this month dedicated to our Blessed Mother. The ancient prayer of the church for Easter, the Regina Caeli, is also most appropriate to pray during this Easter season which overlaps the month of May this year:

Queen of heaven, rejoice! Alleluia! He whom you did merit to bear, alleluia!

Has risen as he said, alleluia!Pray for us to God, alleluia!

Bible Study We Are an Easter People!Jesus’ Resurrection is the foundation for our belief that we too will one day share eternal life. Bereavement Support The Bereavement Support Group meets on Thursdays at 5:30PM in the St. Francis Room off the Church Hall. Feel free to come once or weekly. Come alone or bring a friend.

Saint of the DaySt. James, son of Alphaeus: Nothing is known about him except his name, and, of course, that jesus chose him to be one of the twelve Apostles. He is known as James the Lesser to avoid confusion with James, the son of Zebedee, also an apostle known as James the Greater (feast day July 25).

St. Philip came from the same town as brothers Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought our Nathaniel (Bartholomew) and told him of the “one about whom Moses wrote” (John 1:45).

Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time to recognize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip to buy bread for the people to eat. Philip answered, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (John 6:7). The lesson taught by Jesus in the midst of the Bread of Life discourse is the human ability to be a bearer of divine power by God’s gift.

Saints Philip and James are celebrated together on May 3 and are revered as the patrons of Uruguay.

New Pastoral Council Members NeededThe annual nominations seeking parishioners to fill three seats on the Pastoral Council for a threeyear term will be taking place on the weekends of May 4 & 5, and May 11 & 12. After the nominations are received, individuals will have the opportunity to learn more about the Council and discern if they are being called to serve. Nominees will be required to attend an

informational meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 PM. The discernment process will assist nominees in determining whether to leave their names in nomination for the final step of the process, which will be the random selection of the number of individuals needed to fill open slots.Eligible members of the council are those parishioners who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and are members of the parish. If you. or someone you know, is an active parishioner, committed to serving the parish, and would like to participate on the Pastoral Council, please return the nomination form that may be found in last week’s bulletin or at the exits of the Church.

Building Bridges Ministry to the LGBTQ Community/Friends and FamiliesOur next meeting will be on Sunday, May 19 at 4:00PM in the Father Sullivan Center. Please join us for a panel discussion on the following reflection.Referring to Rembrandt’s “The Return of the Prodigal Son,” Henri Nouwen writes, “The true center of Rembrandt’s painting is the hands of the father. On them all light is concen-trated; on them the eyes of the bystanders are focused; in them mercy becomes flesh; upon them forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing come together, and through them, not only the tired son, but also the wornout father find their rest.”

For many in the LGBTQ community, the journey of understanding and acknowledging one’s gender identity and/or sexual orientation can be similar to a feeling of being “lost.” If you experienced such lostness, who helped you and animated you to “return home” and own your LGBTQ identity and dignity?

When you “returned home” as an LBBTQ person or ally, was there someone amongst your circle of family and friends who “received and welcomed” you in the spirit of the father in this parable? What form did that welcome take” Why do you think this person (or persons) was most welcoming of you?

As an LGBTQ person or ally, who does the “elder son” represent for you? How do you extend a hand to the “elder sons” in your life or family who would prefer that you be “absent?” How do you explain the “father’s” love to an “elder son?”

These reflection questions are from New Ways Ministry.

Virtus: Protecting God’s Children

Our Catholic Church and our own Parish of St. George have made the commitment to provide the safest possible environment for all minors and vulnerable adults entrusted to our care. The Archdiocese of Hartford has chosen Virtus: Protecting God’s Children for Adults as the program to be implemented for all employees and volunteers who have contact with minors or vul-nerable adults. In this training you will learn best practices for keeping children and vulnerable adults safe while in your care, as well as how to identify behaviors that may indicate a child or vulnerable adult may be experienc-ing abuse in another area of their life and what to do if you suspect such activity.

In order to be in compliance with our Safe Environment Polices, all priests, deacons, diocesan school employees, parish employees and any volunteers who have contact with children or vulnerable adults must undergo a back-ground check and attend Virtus: Protecting God’s Children workshop. Please note, those not in compliance will not be able to continue in their respective ministry until Safe Environment requirements are fulfilled.

The next workshop held at St. George will be on Wednesday, May 8, from 6:009:00 pm in the Fr. Sullivan Center. Parishioners, who are not involved with a ministry and would like to attend, are also welcome. Please RSVP to Lori Roche at 2034533496.

Ministry of Care to the Homebound Do you know someone who wants to receive Holy Communion and cannot leave their home? Or someone who is sick, is recovering from surgery, who is alone and would like someone to pray with them? We are willing to visit your neighbors or loved ones at home or in nursing facilities and bring them Holy Communion or some cheer. We have teams of parishioners who visit Apple Rehab, Madison House, Solstice, Guilford House, Artis Senior Living and Evergreen Woods on a regular basis. Often, our parishioners who are homebound are the ones who would love someone to visit them. Even their caregivers and family members would enjoy a visit. Please call Sr. Kathleen at 2034532788 ext. 201, and we will set up a time to visit you.
