Page 2: PremAire® Supplied-Air Respirator System

The PremAire Respirator is a Type C, pressure-demand, supplied-air respirator as defined by NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84.

The PremAire Supplied-Air Respirator isrecommended for users not requiringemergency escape capability. This unit'sadvantage over conventional air-supplieddevices is that users can easily add thoseoptions needed for future applications.

The basic PremAire Respirator can be upgradedwith any of three options. These include:

• an escape cylinder option (in either a five-|or ten-minute-rated air supply) thatpermits emergency escape fromImmediately Dangerous to Life or Health(IDLH) atmospheres.

• a dual-supply option that lets workersconnect from one pressurized continuousair source to another without losing air flow continuity.

• Vortex tube option that deliverswhole-body temperature control foradded worker comfort.

Most options can be combined or usedindividually, giving users thousands ofrespirator configurations from which tochoose. Because of its modularity andversatility, the system is well-suited for use in abroad range of applications, includinghazardous material handling, confined space work, chemical and petrochemicalprocessing, shipbuilding, utilities work, asbestos and lead paint abatement, nuclearapplications, general industry, andfire service.

In operation, the PremAire System Supplied-Air Respirator provides respirable air to theuser on demand - not constantly, as with aconstant-flow type device. As such, it can beused with a large, compressed air cylinder ofbreathable air or a bank of cylinders set up incascade fashion. Alternatively, the PremAireSystem can be used with a compressor systemdesigned and configured to supply respirablebreathing air to the respirator within theNIOSH-approved pressure range.

The PremAire System is designed to maintainslight positive air pressure inside the facepiece- whether the wearer is inhaling or exhaling -to prevent contaminants from entering thefacepiece, should there be slight face-to-facepiece seal leakage.

Whenconnectedtoanairsource,systemprovidescontinuousrespiratoryprotectionuntilusersdisconnectfromair-supplyhose.Inemergencyescapesituations,cylindersactivatebyopeningthecylindervalve.Shouldtheprimaryairsupplyfailorbeinterrupted,cylinderprovidesanemergencyescapeairsource.

Dependinguponuserneeds,escapecylindersareavailableineitherfive-orten-minute-ratedairsupply.Dependinguponuserpreference,wearersalsohavechoiceofcylinderplacement– positionedoneithertheleftorrighthip.

Note: The emergency escape air cylinder is the onlyPremAire Respirator configuration approved foruse in IDLH conditions.

CAUTION: The emergency-escape air cylinder must not be used to provide respiratory protection whileentering the working area. Entry must be made onlywhen connected to the primary air source through the air-supply hose.

PremAire System withDual-Supply Option

AmajoradvantageofthePremAireSystemdual-supplyoptionisimprovedmobility,asworkersneednotremaintetheredtoasingleair-supplyhosethroughouttheworkperiod.Toaccommodatethisoption,thePremAireSystemmanifoldfeaturestwoair-inletports:aMAIN inletandaDUAL-SUPPLY inlet.Bothareusedtodeliverrespirableairtotheuserwhenconnectedtoapressurizedairsource.

Withdual-supplycapability,userscanconnectfromonepressurizedcontinuousairsourcetoanotherwithoutlosingcontinuityofairflow.Whenthefirstlengthofair-supplyhosehasreacheditslimit,thewearersimplyplugsintoasecondapprovedairsourceanddisconnectsfromthefirst.Thistechniqueisknownas“leap-frogging”asitgivesworkerstheabilitytomovefromstationtostationwithoutdisruptingtheairsupply.

Operating Principle:

Thedual-supplyoptionworksonthesameprincipleasthePremAireSupplied-AirRespirator.WhetheraworkerisusingtheMAIN inletofthemanifold,theDUAL-SUPPLY inlet,orbothinletssimultaneously,therespiratorwillprovidesupplied-airrespiratoryprotectionaslongastheuserremainsconnectedtooneofthetwoairsources.

A Portable Air Supply

Forevengreaterversatility,thedual-supplyoptioniscompatiblewiththeTransportAire™PortableAir-SupplySystem.TheTransportAireSystemisavailableintwoversions,oneforhigh-pressurecylindersandoneforlow-pressurecylinders.Bothversionsconsistofanimpact-resistanthandlewithurethane-coatednylonstrapsthatfitaroundstandardself-containedbreathingapparatusaircylinders.AnAudi-Larm™AudibleAlarmwarningdeviceisstandardonthehigh-pressuresystemandisavailableasanoptionforthelow-pressuresystem.

WiththeTransportAireSystemconnectedtothedual-supplyinletofthePremAireSystemmanifold,aworkercancarrytheportableairsupplytoalocationwhereasecondairsourceisavailableforlonger-termuse.AfterconnectingthesecondairsourceintotheMAIN inletmanifold,theusercandisconnecttheTransportAireSystemandkeepitavailableuntilit’stimetoexitthearea.

Applicationswherethisfeaturecanbeusedincludehazardousmaterialdisposalandremediationsiteswhereheavyequipmentoperatorswork.ForadditionalinformationontheTransportAireSystemandMSAauxiliarycylinders,contactMSACustomerServiceoranMSAauthorizeddistributor.

Whencombinedwiththeemergencyescapecylinderoption,thedual-supplyoptionissuitableforuseinIDLHenvironments.Thedual-supplyoptioncanalsobeusedinconjunctionwiththePremAireSystemvortextubeoption,providingthatacontinuousair-supplysource(suchasanaircompressor)isused.

Note: The TransportAire Portable Air-Supply Systemmust not be used with vortex tubes, as the coolingsystem would exhaust the cylinder air supply ata higher than normal rate.

PremAire System Manifold

TheheartofthePremAireSystemisitsunique,patentedmanifold– themanifoldservesastheairdistributioncenterfortheentiresystem.ItisalsothecomponentthatpermitsuseofallPremAireSystemoptions.

Positionednearthewearer’swaist,themanifoldhasfiveindividualportsthatpermitconnectionofvariousPremAireSystemair-supplyhosesandsystemoptions.Theseportsincludeaninletforconnectingtheemergency-escapecylinder’shigh-pressurehose;anoutletforthevortextubeconnectionhose;aninletforthemainair-supplyhose;aninletforthedual-supplyoption;andanoutletusedtoconnectthePremAireSystemmanifoldtothemask-mountedregulator.

PremAireCadetRespiratoruserscanchoosefromthreewaist belts: astandard,uncoated,nylonwebbeltiftherearenodecontaminationfactors;apolyurethane-coatednylonbeltdesignedforeasydecontamination;andaNomexbeltassemblythatprovidesaddedflameandheatresistance.Allthreebeltsaccommodatewaistsupto48inches.

PremAire System withEscape-Cylinder Option

ThePremAireSystemescapecylinderoptionallowsuserstoworkinanIDLH(ImmediatelyDangeroustoLifeorHealth)atmospherebyprovidinganemergencyescapecapability.TheNationalInstituteforOccupationalSafetyandHealth(NIOSH)requiresthiscapabilityforanysupplied-airrespiratorusedinanIDLHatmosphere.

IDLHmeansconditionsthatposeimmediatethreattolifeorhealth,orconditionsthatposeanimmediatethreatofsevereexposuretocontaminantssuchasradioactivematerials,whicharelikelytohaveadversecumulativeordelayedeffectsuponhealth.

PremAireSystemrespiratorsequippedwiththisoptionfeatureabelt-mountedcarbonfiberoraluminumaircylinder.Innormaluse,apparatusoperatesonsameprinciplesasPremAireSystempressure-demandsupplied-airrespirators.

PremAire System with Vortex Tube Option

WhenprotectivesuitsareworninconjunctionwiththePremAireSystem,thevortextubeoptionhelpstoimproveworkercomfortandproductivitybyprovidingtemperaturecontrol.Forexample,whenworkersmustwearchemicalsplashsuits,they’reprovidedwithacoolingcapabilitywiththisoption.

Twovortextubemodelsareavailable:acool-onlyversionreducesthetemperatureofairflowingintotheprotectivegarmentbyasmuchas60•F;andawarm/cool modelwhichprovidesthesamecoolingcapability,butalsoprovidestheoptionofincreasingthetemperatureofairflowingintothegarmentbyasmuchas60•F.Assuch,thewarm/cool modeliswell-suitedforpersonnelwhomustworkincoldclimatesorrefrigeratedrooms.

Page 4: PremAire® Supplied-Air Respirator System

Operating Principle:

Inoperation,asingleair-supplyhosefeedstheMAIN inletofthePremAireSystemmanifold,wheretheairpathisthensplitintwo:oneportionflowstothemask-mountedregulatorattachedtothefacepiecewhileasecondportionisdirectedintothebelt-mountedvortextube.Insidethevortextube,rapidexpansionofairproducesbothcoolandwarmair.Withthecool-only version,hotairisventedthroughthevortextube’sexhaustportwhilecoolairisdirectedintothesuit.Withthewarm/cool version,theworkercandirecteitherthecoolorwarmairintothesuitfortemperaturecontrol.

VortextubesdesignedforthePremAireSystemarecompatiblewithawiderangeofchemical-resistantclothing.
