General ConsiderationsRegardless of size, the following items needto be taken into consideration:

1. Sanitation, including provision forappropriate infection control and disinfection, specimen and tissue disposal and instrument sterilization.

2. Ventilation.

3. Gross specimen and body photography.

4. X-ray facilities, if medico-legal work is performed.

5. Collections of microbiological and toxicological specimens, includingsafeguards for specimens requiringchain of custody.

6. Refrigeration for specimens and supplies.

7. Dictation equipment.

Much thought should be given to the ventilation system. Consider a downdrafttable, when appropriate, instead of ventilation hoods. Surfaces should bedurable enough to withstand cutting, exposure to strong cleaning agents such as bleach, and exposure to chemicals such as formaldehyde. Surfaces should also be easy to clean.

LocationAccess for gurneys to the morgue must be provided. The location is further dictatedby the location of the loading ramp, to provide access for funeral directors to pick up bodies. The room should beaccessible to physicians and students to attend autopsies.

Work Flow The following suggestions are to serve as a guide. Data to be considered whendetermining the size and design of theAutopsy/Morgue suite include the following:

1. The number of autopsies to be performed yearly.

2. The number of autopsies to be performed simultaneously.

3. The number of general hospital autop-sies performed versus medical/legalautopsies.

4. Attendance of medical staff, students, law enforcement and other interestedparties at autopsies.

5. The number of bodies to be held at a given time in the morgue refrigerators.

Cadaver HandlingAppropriate gurneys must be provided totransport cadavers to the morgue. Once inthe morgue, movable lifts are required toraise and lower cadavers onto tables, storage racks and refrigerators. Considerthe ergonomics of the equipment and roomlayout. Will it be safe (and convenient) tolift, lower and move an 82" x 23" (208 x 58cm) body tray with an average 200 lb. load?

Functional Areas The most efficient morgue designs considerwork-flow patterns that allow for handling,post-mortem evaluation, and storage ofbodies. Consider providing rooms for specific activities such as the following:

1. Shower and Dressing Area.2. Preparations - Wash Room.3. Autopsy Area.4. Isolation Area.5. Dissection Area.6. Storage Area.7. Viewing Area.

Autopsy AreaAccommodations must be made for eviscer-ation to be done in this area. It will be ahigh activity area that will require a greatdeal of cleaning. This area should includetables and sinks and a dictation system. There are many models of autopsy andnecropsy tables available. Some are stationary, while others are mobile. Thetables should be at a comfortable workingheight. Adjustable tables such as theShandon LM-4 or LM-10 models allow thework surface to be raised or lowered to suitthe user. Check with local codes for built-ingarbage disposal use, vacuum breaker require-ments and liquid wastedisposal or collection.

Isolation AreaAn area isolated from therest of the morgue is need-ed for working on high-riskcases. It should bedesigned to decrease the potential spread ofpathogens. The areashould have its own autopsy table and sink. It is preferable for theinfectious area to have aventilation system that isseparate from the rest ofthe morgue facility.

Dissection AreaThis area should be designed to performdetailed organ dissection after evisceration. There should be adequate overhead lightingand dictation system. It may be part of theautopsy table, such as the LM-9 L-ShapedTable or at a specific dissection center such as the Grosslab Senior. If a cryostat s used for rapid diagnosis, the equipmentand the histologic slide staining should beplaced in the preparation room, not in theautopsy room.

Storage The design and layout should include somemeans of keeping the cadaver cold to inhibitdecay. A variety of refrigeration options isavailable including models with telescopingracks, roller systems and walk-in models.Racking systems should also be consideredin planning this section of the project.Consider installing double end-opening storage systems so that funeral home personnel can receive the body withoutentering the autopsy room.

Viewing AreaConsider including an area that is separatefrom the rest of the morgue facility wherethe family of the deceased can view thebody. Some options include the following:

1. A room with a viewing window or a curtained section.

2. Refrigerator with a telescopic racking system (preferably open at both ends).

3. Walk-in refrigerators with a window.

4. Video-tape viewing.

Custom Built To Your Specifications

Within the autopsy room, odors and fumes maybe present. To increase the safety of the area, particular attention should be paid to theinstallation of an efficient ventilation system.Shandon has a series of tables with a simpleyet effective design that pulls fumes down andaway from workers.

Shandon downdraft tables provide apassageway for fumes to be exhausted bydrawing air from the work surface to aroof vent.

Typically, a duct extends from the base of thetable through the floor. Waste water and airseparate in the table pedestal. Air drawn bythe facility-supplied fan vents to the roof ofthe building.

The underside of the pedestal is open to allowfor the optimal placement of utility tie-ins.

Shandon has an in-house air-flow specialistwho can assist your architects and engineersin designing a system that will provideexcellent efficiency.

Other ventilation system are available. Please call for specifics.

Features And AccessoriesTabletop ConstructionShandon fabricates tabletops from 14-gauge stainless steel.Tabletops have a 14-gauge side stiffener welded into the long sides of the tables to provide maximum strength and durability.

Acoustical CoatingA special coating is applied to the undersides of autopsy tables for sound-deadening and to prevent condensation. It is finished in silver enamel.

Quality-Built for Easy SanitationCorners and sink bottoms of tables have large radii for easy, thorough cleaning. Welds in work areas are ground and polished for a smooth finish that requires minimal maintenance.

Anti-shock ReceptaclesPower-equipped 110/120V tables are provided with a GFCI (GroundFault Circuit Interrupter). The GFCI automatically stops the electricalsupply in the event of a ground fault condition. It is designed tominimize the potential of injury to the user. Units designed for220/240V have duplex receptacle which does not automatically stop current. You may connect the duplex receptacle to an RCD(Residual Current Device) to halt the electrical supply in the case of a ground fault condition.

Hand Spray Hose Most tables are equipped with a spray nozzle with on/off thumbcontrol and 6' of durable, reinforced tubing. It provides a strongstream of water for rinsing instruments and work surfaces.

Hydro-Aspirator with Reverse FlowStandard on several Shandon tables and available as an option on others. It provides powerful suction and areverse flow feature that relieves anyblockage in the line.

OptionsScale and Scale Bracket A 9kg scale (3kg x 10g) is available as an accessory for Shandon tables. It isavailable with a factory installed tablemount or on a portable autopsy scalestand. (See page 138.)

Slats Tabletops may be fitted with removableslats to support bodies instead of gridplates. Slats provide excellent fluid drainage.

OptionsDisposer UnitsHeavy-duty disposer units can befactory-installed on most tables. The unit comes complete with watersolenoid valve, vacuum breaker,water-tight on-off switch and thermaloverload protector. Standarddisposers are 3/4 HP. All plumbing and wiring is done at the factory. The unit is available for 110/120V or 220/240V tables.

Please check local ordinances beforeordering equipment with a disposer.

Metric and/or EnglishMeasurementMarkingsMost tables are available with optional engravedmeasurement markings. These markings can beetched into the top front orback edge of the table in

either metric units (cm/mm) or English units (inches/feet). Be sure to specify this feature at the time the table is ordered.

Continuous-Flow Table RinseA row of nozzles integrated into the table header sprays a continuous flow of water to flush away waste from the table surface.

Perimeter TableFlushing SystemPrecisely perforatedstainless steel tubefits the perimeter ofthe table worksurface. Use it towash over the entiretable surface at onetime. A flexible lineand control valveconnect the perimetertable flushing systemto the water supply. It is removable andcan be made to fit any Shandon table.

Lever DrainTables withoutdisposer systems may be produced with lever drains. The lever closes off the drain to preventaccidental loss of specimens during rinsing. The drain opens by simply lifting the lever.
