OLD AND NEW SAT EXAMSBy Dr. Wayne Adams

Many parents and students arewondering about the old and new SATExams. This school year, 2015 – 2016,is a transition time with the new SATExam being required starting in thespring of 2016 for all students, and ashortened form is an option for thePSAT Exams in October, 2015, for ris-ing juniors.

THE NEW SAT EXAM IS MUCHMORE DIFFICULT

The Essay is much more difficult. It has been lengthened from 25 min-utes to 50 minutes and now looks likean analytical essay from the AP Lan-guage and Composition Exam. Thestudent will have to know and to apply“how an author uses (1) evidence, suchas facts or examples, to support claims,(2) reasoning to develop ideas and toconnect claims and evidence, and (3)stylistic or persuasive elements, such asword choice or appeals to emotion, toadd power to the ideas expressed.” Inother words, the new Essay is twice aslong and requires far more “criticalthinking and analysis”.

Reading is much more difficult fortwo reasons. (1) It still requires a highlevel of vocabulary. Consider this be-ginning of a Reading section withhigh-level words underlined: “Today, Iam an inquisitor. An hyperbole wouldnot be fictional and would not over-state the solemnness that I feel rightnow. My faith in the Constitution iswhole; it is complete; it is total. And Iam not going to sit here and be an idlespectator to the diminution, the sub-version, the destruction, of the Consti-tution.” (2) The format requires amuch higher level of critical thinking, being very similar to the multiplechoice sections of the AP Languageand the AP Literature exams.

Math is much more difficult. There are now two sections: one wherea calculator can be used, and a secondwhere it cannot. More charts andgraphs are used, with many questionslike the Science Reasoning section ofthe ACT. In general, the questions aremore difficult. Unlike before, now thestudent is required to know all formu-las and equations needed.

Grammar is about the same levelof difficulty as with the old exam.

THREE MAJOR RISKS The first major risk is that students

will “shy away” from the new SATExam and continue migrating to theACT. Because the ACT is equally ac-ceptable to college admissions officers,I believe more will “go with theknown”. Second, the SAT is keyed di-rectly to the Common Core Curricu-lum, which many states have rejectedand many parents do not like because itis viewed as a major expansion of thegovernment trying to increase controlover education of high school students.Third, it will take several years for col-lege admissions officers to becomecomfortable with the new SAT becausethere is no track record and correlationwith college performance. In otherwords, who needs to take the more un-known SAT when the ACT is just asacceptable and easier?

SUMMER SAT AND ACT PREPCLASSES

During the summer, I am offeringmy prep classes for the current SATExam (which all rising seniors willtake), and the ongoing ACT Exam. Many students prefer tutoring in thesummer because of more flexibility inclass scheduling and not having thetime pressures of the school year. I alsooffer a combination class that saves 15class hours from taking each prep class

separately. My normal student im-proves 200 – 350 points on the SATsuperscore, and 4 – 7 points on theACT composite.

Effective July 15th, I will also havea full SAT Prep Class to prepare stu-dents for the new SAT Exam, and forthe PSAT “New-Exam” option for ris-ing juniors in October. This SAT PrepClass will also contain an optional APPrep Module with one section toquickly learn over 100 key definitionsstudents must know for both the essayand the multiple choice sections of APLanguage and AP Literature exams, and a second section showing how towrite the required synthesis, analysis, and rhetorical essays for AP Exams. This module can also be very helpfulfor students who want a “head start”to achieving their best possible score ifthey are taking either of these APcourses in the fall.

If You Would Like To Talk MoreAbout How I Can Help Your Student, please contact me at 727-253-0639 [email protected].

Dr. Wayne Adams is one of theleading SAT and ACT tutors in thecountry. His students normally im-prove 200 – 350 points on the SAT su-

perscore, and 4 – 7 points on the ACTcomposite. They have been admittedto eight of the top ten universities inthe country, fifteen of the top twenty-five, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale,Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UChicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hop-kins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory,UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC(Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern(Boston), Boston College, GeorgiaTech, Air Force and Merchant MarineService Academies, Penn State, LSU,Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF,UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida GulfCoast, FIU, New College of Florida,Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan -New England - and Berkley Conserva-tories of Music. Family owned and operated since1963, Everglades Farm Equipment isone of the largest John Deere dealersin the world. Through hard work, dedication and perseverance in hardtimes, Everglades Farm Equipmenthas grown exponentially since its hum-ble beginning in a small barn down inthe Everglades. Now, the company isone of the largest John Deere tractordealerships in the world with twelvelocations in Florida offering JohnDeere products, parts and repair serv-ices. There is an Everglades FarmEquipment store located near yourneighborhood too, at 2240 SuccessDrive in Odessa, and the friendly folksthere want to show you why there isno better place to purchase JohnDeere products.

President and CEO John O.

Schlechter says, “We believe our in-vestments in product availability, qual-ity parts, outstanding service and ourfocus on meeting our customers’needs as efficiently and effectively aspossible is the only way to keep youcoming back. Our family initiallybegan and continues to operate afarming operation, so we understandwhat it takes to make a business, nomatter what industry, a success.”

Back in 1963, under a cypresstree that still stands on the propertytoday, Walter Schlechter started Ever-glades Farm Equipment. He’d sold hisradish farm in Belle Glade, Florida andwith that money Walter started hisbusiness to meet the needs of fellowfarmers by providing John Deereproducts and parts, as well as servicecenters for John Deere products. Un-derstanding farmers’ needs and meet-ing them with dependability has

become a family tradition at Ever-glades Farm Equipment, which cele-brated its 50th Anniversary in 2013.

Walter’s son John (J.O.) is thecurrent CEO and president of Ever-glades Farm Equipment. He and hiswife Eleanor took over the business in1967 and viewed the business as anopportunity and a challenge. Despitehard times, the Schlechter family andEverglades Farm Equipment perse-vered with hard work, sacrifice anddedication. “With every employee, weshared what we had with them and ifwe had a little, we shared a little and ifwe had a lot, we shared a lot,” recallsJ.O. He says that trusting in God toprovide was really the foundation thathe built the business on. “We wentthrough some times and there wasn’tany bridge there, but when we gotthere – there was a bridge and we didit more than one time.”

In 1968 J.O. brought in a friend,

W.L. Cunningham, Jr., who had beenin the agriculture business all his lifeand brought with him many agricul-tural customers that were native to thearea. John O. says, “When W.L. cameinto the area, he was familiar withmost people in South Florida in agri-culture because he was in the inspec-tion service so he had a great basis forour customer clientele, and most ofthe people we did business with werenative to the area and invariably wewere able to talk to them.”

In 1969 the growing EvergladesFarm Equipment family built the loca-tion in Belle Glades to continue ex-pansion, and by 1975 more than7,000 sq. ft. had been added to theoriginal building. Service ManagerRoger Walker came into the businessin 1977. Walker was a mechanic, buthad never even seen a John Deeretractor but he learned the John Deeremachines inside and out in no time. “I

think we might had about five of usback in the shop at that time,” saysWalker. “We were on call seven days aweek, 24 hour a day.” Walker adds,“John Schlechter [J.O.] is one of thetop three people I’ve ever known inmy entire life. I can’t say enough goodthings about him – friendship, boss, mentor, everything. I really love theSchlechter family – we had a greatworking relationship together andsomehow developed a really good re-lationship with [John] Deere. It was

just a fun job. It was just a pleasure toget to get up and come to work in themorning and I liked what it stood for– honesty and integrity and giving youthe best product we had to offer andstanding behind it.”

That same commitment to servicethat Roger Walker reminisces aboutand that was instrumental in buildingthe stellar reputation of the companyis still a cornerstone of EvergladesFarm Equipment stores today.

In 1989, J.O.’s son Mike saw that

growth was the way of the future andhe decided to take actions to makethat growth for Everglades FarmEquipment possible. By 2000, Ever-glades Farm Equipment had expandedfrom one location to eight locationsacross Florida. Mike, who is the com-pany’s chief operating officer, says,“Ultimately it has been a great movefor everyone at Everglades FarmEquipment.” Mike acknowledges thathis father put together a team that laidthat groundwork early on, buildingthe business on hard work, integrityand relationships. “They did a lot ofthings that we are reaping the benefitsof today, but I think we’ve taken thosesame qualities and propelled it evenfurther along the ladder. I think it’sour responsibility. We are being heldaccountable – me as a family memberof the Schlechter family, to maintainand improve the quality of EvergladesFarm Equipment.”

beating in the hot Florida weatherwhere they rarely get a break. JaimeAir can repair all major brands of airconditioners. If your unit needs re-pairs, Jaime is personally involved tomake sure everything is done correctlyand in a timely manner. And sinceJaime Air’s service techs aren’t paid oncommission, you can rest assured thatthey won’t try to sell you unnecessaryparts or services.

Air Purification & Duct Sanitation There are several signs that

could indicate you have mold grow-ing in your ductwork. If you seestaining or water damage aroundductwork, condensation inside, orsmell a musty smell, you should getyour ductwork checked for mold. Ifleft untreated, mold can make youand your family sick. Jaime Air can

install UV-C lights to prevent moldgrowth in your system. They can alsoinstall electronic air cleaners to helpremove pollen and dust.

However, in some cases youmight want to have your ductworkreplaced and the professionals atJaime Air are experts at doing this ina timely, cost effective, and unobtru-sive way. In fact, dirty ductwork thatis over 12 years old in Florida can bereplaced for about the same cost ashaving it cleaned. As an extra bonus, you might find that the airflowthroughout your house improveswith new ductwork.

“There is no reason for one roomto be hotter than others in yourhouse,” says Jaime. “But some timesthe ductwork that was originally in-stalled is too small for the room to getsufficient air or the purpose of theroom has changed over the years andtherefore new ductwork is needed toget more air into the room. We canfix your ductwork so that every roomin your house will be cool as you wantit to be.”

New Air Conditioner Installation The average life span of an air

conditioning unit in Florida is 7 to 10

years, although some higher end mod-els can last as many as 17. If you findyourself in need of a new air condi-tioning unit, Jaime Air will help youfind a system to fit your home andbudget. They install many differentbrands of air conditioning units andare licensed dealers for two of the topbrands – Trane and Bryant.

“Jaime Air installed a new Bryantsystem for me. I got proposals from a

He was the only one whomeasured my home to be sure I hadthe right size unit. The Red Cross Needs YOUDo you know what your Ameri-

can Red Cross does? I'll bet you arenodding your head – you think youdo. Everyone thinks of the RedCross as the big disaster people –hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes –especially here in Florida where weget all three. It is what you see ontelevision, whenever there is a bigcrisis. They are at every major disas-ter before the TV cameras arrive, andlong after they are gone to help feedand shelter those who have losteverything. They give hugs. Theygive hope. They help communitiesendure.

But the biggest disaster they re-spond to is not a tornado, flood orhurricane. It’s not a man-made disas-ter like a train derailment or a planecrash. More than 90% of the disastersthey respond to are local home firesright here in our community everyday. On average here in Tampa Baythere is a home fire nearly every sin-gle night – about 350 per year. Tothe family that loses everything thatnight it’s a big disaster – one of theworst days of their lives – and the

Red Cross is there. When a family loses their home

and has no place to go, the fire de-partment calls the Red Cross, 24hours a day, 7 days a week. Volun-teers from the Red Cross respondimmediately, having a continuouscommitment to be on scene within 2hours. They verify the situation andtake care of the family’s needs, mak-ing sure they have a roof over theirheads that night, that they have foodand clothing, that the kids are readyto go to school the next day. Nursesare on call that can help replacemedications and eyeglasses, and theRed Cross gives a small toy to thechild who lost all of their cherishedbelongings and needs something softto cuddle; but that’s just the begin-ning.

In the days and weeks that fol-low, trained Red Cross volunteercaseworkers help that family on theirroad to recovery; making sure theyaren’t alone; making sure they haveaccess to every community resourceavailable. Unless you’ve been in theunfortunate circumstance to suffer a

house fire you probably don’t knowthat’s what keeps our local Red Crossvolunteers busy every day.

Over 90% of the work done bythe Red Cross is done by volunteers. These special people make a differ-ence in someone’s life every day. Vol-unteers like Lisa, who tells the storyof one of the fires she responded to:

“I was called to the scene of a burn-ing house at 8:30 one night. Theelderly lady who lived there had left aspace heater too close to a curtainand it sent her wood frame home upin flames very quickly. She called 911and ran out with nothing in herhands but her cat and car keys. Shewas left with nothing. Nothing.

More than 90% of the disasters the local American Red Cross responds toare home fires. On average, there are approximately 350 home fires per year in

the Tampa Bay Area and the Red Cross is there to help every time!

When my team arrived she was sit-ting in the back of a police car shiver-ing. We wrapped her in a Red Crossblanket and hugged her tight. Cry-ing, she was able to give us herdaughter’s phone number to call forher – but her daughter was in Ohio.It would take some time for her toget to Tampa. The Red Cross is asupport system, a safety net. We wereable to put her in a hotel for 3nights, and help her with other im-mediate needs until her daughter was

able to come down. It was importantto stay in constant touch with her –she needed our support system. Shecould have been my mother, mygrandmother. I could only imaginehow grateful I would have been forRed Cross volunteers. Her relief atseeing us and knowing she would besafe was palpable. And her hugs andthanks gave more back to us as vol-unteers than we ever imagined. Ilove my work with the Red Cross.”

This amazing organization has

hundreds of wonderful volunteersjust like Lisa who want to give backto their community. But, the RedCross desperately needs more. Inaddition to responding to house firesthey're helping their community getprepared- installing smoke alarmsand teaching kids how to be readyfor disasters. They are deep in plan-

ning for the upcoming hurri-cane season that begins in justa few weeks and are trainingvolunteers in logistics andsheltering, etc. Many of theirvolunteer jobs are yet to befilled this season and theyneed your passion for helpingothers to help make a differ-ence. Whether you have 20hours a week to give, or just 2,won’t you consider joiningthis group of caring and com-passionate people?
