McKitrick Elementary School’sart teacher, Dianne Zink, has hit on away to get elementary-school-agedchildren completely jazzed about art!For the past several years, her studentshave listened to the music of GregPercy, a teacher himself, who writessing-along songs that help kids learnabout famous artists and masterpieces.Percy’s play list is called Songs in theKey of Art, and because of the carefulplanning and fundraising efforts ofMs. Zink, McKitrick Elementary stu-dents enjoyed two private concerts byGreg Percy on August 26.

It may have been early, butPercy’s fun interaction had the wholecrowd bouncing to the beat. Hecalled out, “Okay, it’s early in themorning, please don’t be wimpy!”Singing “The Red and Yellow Blues,”a song he wrote to help his own stu-dents learn their primary colors, Percydidn’t give the audience a choice, they

were up and moving to the cha-cha-cha and learning to mix up primarycolors to a beat.

“I’ve been wanting to get himhere for a long time,” said DianneZink. “So I did last year’s art show alittle differently, and we framed all ofthe artwork and the parents were ableto purchase their child’s artworkframed and ready to hang. We madeenough profit from the framed artsales to pay to bring him here and thatwas my goal.”

McKitrick Elementary Rocks to Songsin the Key of Art!

Ms. Zink didn’t tell parents or thestudents what the money would beused for, as she didn’t want to buildup hope in case there weren’t enoughfunds raised. The concerts werehugely successful, with students andteachers alike enjoying the fun per-formance. We here at NeighborhoodNews & Lifestyles want to say, greatjob Ms. Zink and McKitrick Elemen-tary, on going above-and-beyond togive your students a day for the mem-ory books!

Faylee and I work together oneach individual project to ensure thatour clients get exactly what they wantby a team they can trust. We don’tsubcontract and we always visit ourjobsites together.”

As a homeowner, it is your re-sponsibility to make certain that a con-tractor is licensed and insured; alwaysask about licensing and check theircredentials, because a faulty job could

end up costing you valuable time andmoney. Contractor Chris Snyder isboth licensed and insured to performcontracting work in the State ofFlorida. It truly is his pas-sion to provide beautiful custom de-signs for his clients that are not onlyaesthetically pleasing but durable andfunctional as well. Faylee, a nativeFloridian, says, “We work together asa team because we just love being to-gether and completing a project makesus both feel accomplished. What bet-ter life is there than to work with yoursoul mate every day and be happydong it?”

Chris adds, “We love the TampaBay Area and are here to stay. Ourcustomers never have to worry aboutus not being there for them if some-thing goes awry. We make it our mis-sion to provide the best finishedproject the first time around, but ifanything isn’t up to standards, we getback to the project right away and finda solution, free of travel fees.”

I chose Chrisbecause I could just tell he was thetype of contractor that was truly hon-est. From my experience with con-tractors I have seen that most don’ttake the time to walk you through theprocess. From the minute Chris walksin the door you get an overall sense oftrust with the guy. He knew what theexact problem was, why it leaked andshowed me the project plans. Thiswas before I really knew Chris well, but I just knew he was the right guyfor the job. Bear Track Lake Adventures – A Nature-Lover’s Dream! By Alexis Selby

No traffic, no commercialization, and no stress; surrounded by nothingbut nature, as you sit on the backporch and stare out into the serenelake and lush woodlands, you are in-stantly overcome by a sense of calm-ness and relaxation. Perfectlycontrasted by the vibrant green treeline, the sky is a light blue color. Thereis not a sound to be heard for miles, aside from that of chirping birds or the‘who’ of a friendly owl – when youstay at a Bear Track Lake Adventures’cabin you truly have found a secludedoasis and a perfect representation ofwhat it means to get away.

If you have never taken a vacationto the beautiful mountains of Ken-tucky, than you are missing out onone of the country’s most exclusivehidden gems and Bear Track Lake Ad-ventures surely has done an excep-tional job of bringing you to nature’sdoorstep. Situated in the middle of avalley on 32 acres of mountainous ter-rain, overlooking a 7 acre lake, thispicturesque setting is like somethingout of a fairy tale. From the momentyou arrive you will slowly feel yourtensions slip away and the stresses inyour life all of a sudden won’t seem soimportant. If you are looking for theperfect place to recharge your batteriesyou have found all that and more atBear Track Lake Adventures.

As a guest at Bear Track Lake Ad-ventures expect a warm Kentucky wel-come from owners Fred and JaniceAustin, as well as their son Justin andtheir three dogs. They were such gra-cious hosts and really did an amazingjob of making us feel welcome and in-troducing us to the area. Living rightdown the road from the cabin, they

were always there if we had any ques-tions and truly made our experiencememorable. Their dogs made greatwalking companions, especially theirbeautiful Husky Rocco, who on thefirst night stayed outside our window, guarding us against any creatures thatmight be lurking about.

Fred Austin, a Health Care Ad-ministrator in Florida for 17 years, gotto missing his mountains and seasonsand returned to Kentucky. He builtthe cabins at Bear Track Lake Adven-tures as a way to share this beauty withthe rest of the world, and since his firstcabin was built over three years ago,Fred has had guests from as far awayas Europe and as close as neighboringKentucky cities. No matter where youlive or the lifestyle you lead, you cansurely appreciate the magnificence thatthe Kentucky mountains have to offer!

Sleepy Bear’s DreamWith two bedrooms, two bath-

rooms and an additional loft with abunk bed, the Sleepy Bear’s Dream,

comfortably sleeps seven, and is theperfect option for families. Newly builtin January, the cabin is immaculateand features hand-crafted furniture, custom wood countertops, two third-floor balconies, a full downstairs with apool table, a work out bike and a hottub, and my personal favorite – a backporch that overlooks the lake. Just pic-ture yourself waking up to that amaz-ing view, drinking your morningcoffee as you sit back in the rockingchair taking in the serenity of the lakeas the fog slowly rolls off the top ofthe water. The feeling is almost sur-real, knowing you are amongst naturein its truest form, something un-touched by man.

Bear Lair CabinFor those with a smaller group,

the second one bedroom cabin is theperfect fit, and sleeps four comfort-ably. Located right down the roadfrom the Sleepy Bear’s Dream, theBear Lair too sits right on the lake, with a back porch that overlooks the

serene body of water and pristine na-ture. Built a few years ago, this cabin isjust as beautiful and showcases thesame craftsmanship and attention todetail as its sister cabin next door.

As their names imply, these cabinsare all about bears- from wood carv-ings in the pillars to the furniture, tofigures and decorations that can befound throughout. I think Fred andJanice were very clever in namingthese cabins as you truly feel like abear in hibernation from the rest ofthe world. Away from your hecticschedule and work, for once can letyour mind be at ease and not have toworry about the demands of your life.

As amazing as the cabins are onthe inside, if you love nature than youare going to have to walk outside andexplore the many sights that Leecounty Kentucky has to offer. And thebest part is, if you are looking to dosome exploring, you don’t even have toleave the property. With numerous hik-ing trails and walking paths, as well ascliffs, geological formations and manyother unique sights, you can surely getyour fix of nature on this 32 acre re-treat. They also have a boat so you cantake a trip around the lake for a differ-ent perspective; or possibly throw out aline to catch some catfish for lunch. Ohyeah, and did I mention – right outsidethe cabin doors are numerous 50 mil-lion year old caves, one of which boastscave carvings that date back to what ar-chaeologists believe to be over 8,000years old. In fact if you are an adven-ture seeker and consider yourself to bethe “outdoorsy” type you even havethe option of staying in one of thecaves overnight. “How would you liketo stay in a 50 million year old hotel,”jokes Fred, “we have that!”

“This is an amazing cabin and

Imagine yourself waking up to this amazing view!

place to vacation,” writes one guest.“It was very relaxing and quiet. Thewoods, trails, cliffs and caves andwildlife are amazing to experience. Mytwo eleven year olds had a blast on thefishing boats this weekend. The cabinwas well-equipped with everything weneeded. We loved playing with thesweet dogs too. I’ve stayed at severalcabins throughout Tennessee andKentucky and this is by far my favorite. We will definitely be back. Thanks forthe memories!”

On our visit, my husband and Iwere very fortunate, as Fred gave us a

grand tour of the property, showing usthe magnificent rock formations andcaves. They truly are an impressivesight and as you gaze up in wonder-ment at these breathtaking geologicalformations that date back over 50 mil-lion years old it really does put yourlife into perspective. Each nook andcranny and uniquely formed layer tellsa story of days past and one can onlyimagine everything these rocks havebeen through in their life span.

With all the activities that can befound by merely stepping out thecabin doors, even more can be found

in the surrounding area, from rockclimbing the magnificent cliffs to hik-ing the trails in the state parks, to fish-ing and canoeing the waterways; theyeven have zip lining only a few milesaway. In fact, you might not be awareof this, but Lee county Kentucky isranked among the best rock climbingdestinations in the world. “Peopletravel from all over the world to rockclimb here,” says Janice. When youvisit I also recommend you visit theRed River Gorge – one of Kentucky’sfamous sights. A natural bridge thatoverlooks a steep 100 foot + drop off,

the Red River Gorge really is a mag-nificent sight.

Bear Track Lake Adventures truly isa nature lover’s dream and it is with aheavy head that I leave here today andreturn to reality; although I seek com-fort in knowing I will once again returnto this beautiful oasis and revisit themany amazing memories I have madeon this wonderful trip. So, next timeyou are looking to escape from reality toa place where your stresses will simplymelt away, where you can finally be atpeace and recharge your batteries, I sug-gest you take a little trip to Bear TrackLake Adventures – it is a trip you willsurely cherish for the rest of your life!

And yes, theyhave some beautiful dogs for adoptionthat can bring you joy and uncondi-tional love. Canine Estates was startedby three sisters - Sybil Freeman, JayneSidwell, and Barbara Erskine – in 2011to offer a homelike environment forsmall dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or simply surrendered bytheir owners for various reasons.

Jayne and her husband Greg Sid-well started rescuing dogs some yearsago and soon realized they could notpossibly house all the dogs in need. They purchased a home and renovatedit for the dogs! Thus, Canine Estateswas born! Growing up in Alabama aschildren, people started dropping dogson their front door knowing the fami-lies would take care of them. Thesekind folks wanted to make a differenceso instead of retiring; Canine Estatesbecame their retirement.

Canine Estates is unique in that

these fur babies are provided with ahome environment rather than a shelterexperience where it can be loud, scary, cold and uncertain for these dogs thathave already endured losing theirhomes among other experiences. Byoffering them the comfort of a homeenvironment they can easily transitioninto their forever home once again.
