There are many reasons we loveour Tampa Bay Rays! Of course, there are the games, where everyinning has its white-knuckled, yell-out-loud moments and the breaksare filled with laugh-out-loud anticsthat keep the live audience participat-ing. There is no doubt, as you watchthem heat up the diamond, that theRays players have their heads andtheir hearts in the game. Further-more, they have put their hearts intothe Tampa Bay community and haveput their heads together to make areal difference for the people livinghere.

Spanning the organization fromthe players to the management, theTampa Bay Rays make it their teammission to stay active, both on andoff the diamond. The Rays organiza-tion is much more than entertain-ment and finely tuned athleticism –

though we do love that! From theplayers and their families to thecorporate employees, the Rays arededicated to making a difference inthe community.

One way that the Rays havebeen a positive force in Tampa Bay isthrough the Rays Baseball Founda-tion, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organiza-tion that supports youth educationdevelopment.

The Tampa Bay Rays and theirsupport team continually pitch in tohelp families and individuals in ourcommunity through charities, volun-teer programs and partnership affili-ates.

This Summer: RAYS UP For Our Community!

Most recently, the Rays created anew campaign called “RAYS UP forOur Community.” Launched onJune 1st and lasting until September20th, the “RAYS UP for Our

Community” campaign focuses onfour key areas – Kids, Heroes, Healthand Education. Additionally, everygame during each two-week cam-paign flight will highlight a partneragency “Everyday MVP” on thetelecast and social media.

The four key areas of focus eachhave a Rays team ambassador, includ-ing pitchers Chris Archer and MattMoore, manager Kevin Cash andinfielder Evan Longoria. Each cam-paign has a deep personal meaningfor them.

Tampa Bay Rays president BrianAuld says, “We enter the 10th yearof Stu Sternberg’s ownership with arenewed focus on our mission toenergize our community through themagic of Rays baseball. The ‘RAYSUP For Our Community’ campaigncelebrates our community partnersand helps share their successes witha wider audience.”

Rays pitcher Chris Archer

“threw out the first pitch” on thenew campaign with RAYS UP forKids on June 1st. Archer dedicateshis time and support to programsthat focus on kids in the communi-ties of Tampa Bay, and he is a mentorand advocate for children. As partof RAYS UP for Kids, each of the5,600 students who celebrated theirgraduation at Tropicana Field re-ceived vouchers for four tickets toany Rays game in the homestandfrom June 9th –16th.

Matt Moore heads up the RAYSUP for Heroes campaign from June29th to July 12th. Matt chose RAYSUP for Our Heroes, stating, “Base-ball is our national pastime but wewouldn’t be able to enjoy it withoutthe great men and women whoprotect us. I grew up on an Air Forcebase so I know firsthand that Ameri-can heroes, like my dad, sacrificeevery day to keep us safe. YourTampa Bay Rays are committed to

TCBY –– Cool Treats for Hot DaysBy Dara Tucker

Nearly four summers ago Trinitybecame home to the first TCBY Self-Serve on the West Coast of Florida.Owners Patti and Jay Silar opened thestore with their daughter Jenifer Silar-Mills, who is the store’s marketingmanager. The idea of opening theTrinity location came quickly to Pattiand Jay when they visited a TCBYSelf-Serve store in Charlotte, NorthCarolina. The amazing taste makes ithard to believe the frozen yogurt is96, 98 or 100 percent fat free. Thecouple knew it was a great business tobring back home to Trinity, where ourhot days make cool treats even morescrumptious.

TCBY, also known as “The Coun-try’s Best Yogurt,” originally opened in1981, and is the oldest frozen yogurtcompany in the United States. Thecompany has high health and qualitystandards that appeal to Patti Silar whois a retired RN. Patti says, “TCBYtakes pains to purchase products thatare high quality. Fruit is sanitized tomeet TCBY requirements, and wedon’t use frozen fruit because it turnsto mush on your yogurt. Our fruit are

in their own juices instead of syrup.”Jay Silar adds, “Our yogurts are

kosher and Halal certified. We wantto meet our customers’ needs.”

TCBY’s yogurt is delicious, smooth and creamy. The possibilitiesof flavor combinations and toppingsseem endless, but you many not haveknown it has great nutritional value, too. TCBY has super frozen yogurts(Super Fro-Yo), which is a new classifi-cation of frozen yogurt that sets a highstandard for nutrition within thefrozen yogurt industry. To qualify as aSuper Fro-Yo, TCBY’s frozen yogurtsmeet or exceed (based on a four oz.,half-cup serving) having at least threegrams of fiber, seven types of live andactive cultures, four grams of protein, and 20 percent daily value of vitaminD and calcium. The fiber and probi-otics in TCBY yogurt help you feelsatisfied and aid your body in diges-tion, boosting your general health.Vitamin D and calcium are also essen-tial for bone and muscle health. Theprotein in TCBY yogurt containsamino acids that help proper musclemaintenance. Eating healthy hasnever tasted so good!

Summer Martin truly values hav-

ing healthy dessert options. She says,“We love the Trinity TCBY. Ourdaughter has insulin resistance and itis hard to find a low sugar option fordessert. TCBY always carries a nosugar added flavor and would let usknow when it arrived. The staff atTCBY is so friendly and treated us liketheir extended family. When it cametime for my daughter’s birthday she

couldn’t imagine having it anywhereelse than at TCBY and several of thestaff were there to wish her a HappyBirthday. When we found out that wewere moving to a different town, thestaff got together to say goodbye andeven gave us a going away card! Theyalways went above-and-beyond tooffer great customer service. We loveour Trinity TCBY!”

TCBY’s friendly employees are always available to help you with a sample

Trinity’s TCBY is bright and fun, with a textured wall that changes col-ors. Between the music, bright colors, and cheerful staff, Patti, Jay and Jeniferhave created an atmosphere that’s per-fect for enjoying a treat. Unsure whichof the ten flavors you should try?Don’t worry! An employee is happyto give you a sample. You don’t needto decide on just one flavor either. You can fill your 16 or 25 oz. cup withas little or as much as the cup can hold.Bananas are available to turn yourfrozen yogurt into a banana split. If

you don’t like your flavors mixing, cupdividers can be used to separate them.

The ten available flavors rotate orchange periodically, but there is alwaysa no-sugar-added option and a non-milk based option. For example, Silk™Coconut Milk and Silk™ ChocolateAlmond Milk are the current non-dairy options available. In the upcom-ing months additional frozen yogurtflavors TCBY will be carrying includeEnglish Toffee, Blueberry, ChocolateChip Mint and Apricot. After you dis-pense your frozen yogurt, head overto the topping bar, which has over 45different toppings to choose from, including fresh fruit and crushedReese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Thereare plenty of kids’ favorites such asgummies and candy chocolate rocks. You can top it off with hot chocolatefudge or warm walnuts in a caramelsauce. It’s possible to come to TCBYevery day of the month, and never puttogether a repeat combination of yo-gurt and toppings!

Jay, Patti, and Jenifer are involvedin several community projects andfundraisers including Taste of Trinityand Long Leaf Fall Festival. As activemembers of our community, you’llspot the TCBY “car” around town, and at places such as the New PortRichey and Tarpon Springs Christmas

Parades. Jenifer also works with localnon-for-profit groups for spirit nights. For a set number of hours, a portionof the proceeds made on a designatednight goes back to the school orchurch as a fundraiser. It’s fun anddelicious way to earn money for yournon-for-profit group.

TCBY provides the Trinity areawith a scrumptious and healthy yogurtshop that is perfect for taking the kidsfor a treat, birthday celebration, datenight, or to take a pint from theirfreezer home to enjoy. When you go,make sure to ask for a loyalty rewardcard that gives you 1 point for every

dollar you spend, and after 30 pointsyou earn a $3 coupon. If you’re look-ing for gift that’s sure to be loved, pur-chase a TCBY gift card for any amount.

his entire schedule. The administrationwould not listen to me or even con-sider putting him back in some of hisoriginal classes. That day, I pulled himout of his school and enrolled him inFlorida Virtual School. It was a greatdecision. The only thing lacking withthe virtual classes was interaction withother students and the chance tocollaborate with friends.”

Carleen also found it challengingto help her son in the classes thatweren’t her strongest subjects andoverseeing and coordinating every-thing while also working full time torun her own business.

So this mom and local businessowner started looking for a place forher son, somewhere where he couldget help from teachers and work withother students, and could not findanything like it anywhere close to thearea. “I wanted a stress-free placewhere my son could get guidance andtutoring from experienced teachersand work on his school assignments.I was looking for a comfortable envi-ronment for him where he could learnin the way that works best for him and

have room to hang out with otherkids.”

Middle and high school studentsenrolled in Florida’s Virtual Schoolprogram or home schooled will findthat type of environment at thinkTankVirtual Learning Center. There aretables and chairs where students cangather to collaborate, but there alsoare comfy sofas where they can sit tocomplete their assignments. “Studentscan get up at any time to stretch theirlegs or walk around if they need abreak while working on their assign-ments,” says Carleen. “We have akitchen that is stocked with snacksand drinks and if they are hungry, they can get something to eat. I wantthis to feel like a second home to ourstudents. We also have outdoor areaswhere they can take a break or workon assignments.”

At thinkTank Virtual LearningCenter, the ratio is one teacher forevery four students so your child canget the individualized attention he orshe needs. Once your child is enrolledin Florida Virtual School classes, youadd thinkTank as a secondary contactand they will monitor your child’sprogress and set up a pace chart forthem to follow so assignments arecompleted on time, while making

sure your student understands theconcepts and lessons. Florida VirtualSchool follows the same curriculumas Florida’s public schools and offersAP, honors, and college credit courses.

With virtual school, the studentsare in charge of the pace of their edu-cation. “Your child can take classes athis or her own pace through Florida’svirtual school,” says Carleen. “Stu-dents who come in and begin workingon their classes around 9 a.m. are

usually finished by 1 p.m., but we areopen until 6 p.m. every evening so wecan accommodate different students’needs.”

Carleen shares, “One of the bestparts about the virtual school for ourfamily is that my son is learning at apace that works for him, and when heis finished with his assignments for theday, he is done with school for the dayand we are able to enjoy more timetogether as a family without the stress

Drs. Stephanie Eldridge, MD,MPH and Amir Shirmohammad, MD,MPH are a husband and wife teamthat knows what it’s like to have abusy family lifestyle. In fact, they havetwo lovely daughters and another oneon the way! High school sweethearts,“Dr. Shirmo,” as most patients callhim, and Dr. Eldridge met when theywere just 17, and they’ve been to-gether ever since. Both of them gradu-ated Cum Laude from TulaneUniversity in New Orleans where theymajored in Cell and Molecular Biol-ogy. They went on to earn Master’sDegrees in Public Health and Epi-demiology before earning their Med-ical Degrees, staying at Tulane theentire time. Serving Trinity and itssurrounding areas since 2007, Dr.Shirmohammad and Dr. Eldridgehave already met their goal of creatinga new kind of medical practice asTrinity Family Physicians is one thatcertainly stands out from the restin its dedication, commitment andfollow-through.

Taking Time With Patients is Im-portant

Most of us do not enjoy going tothe doctor. We want it to be quick andpainless. We want the drive-throughversion of anything that’s not pleasantthese days. However, if you go to a“drive-through” service for healthcare, where the goal is to get as manypatients rotated through the door aspossible, you’re going to just be anumber. Trinity Family Physicians isthe opposite of drive-through care. That’s not to say that they aren’ttimely, or that they don’t value theirpatients’ time, because they do, buttheir commitment to each patient issomething that has more value, andthat’s something I’m willing to waitfor. I know that when it’s my turn,

I’m not going to be turned awaywhen I ask a question or voice aconcern. I’m not going to be told tomake another appointment. Each timeI see a doctor at Trinity Family Physi-cians, I feel that I’m being listenedto, and that my care is their utmostpriority at that time.

One patient admits to drivingmore than an hour to get to TrinityFamily Physicians, saying, “I am will-ing to drive to see them no matterwhere I move, and I’m willing towait because it’s not that often thatyou find a physician that offers thatkind of care.”

Dr. Shirmohammad says, “Weoffer our full attention to each of ourpatients, and we don’t want to berushed. While we have a goal to have

each patient checked in and out withina certain amount of time, our true in-vestment is in the time it takes foryour health to be properly evaluated.”

Another patient said, “They arethe absolute best! My wife and I wereboth looking for ‘old fashioned’ doc-tors, the type we had when we werekids that would take time with youand seemed truly concerned for yourhealth. Drs. Shirmo and Eldridge wereexactly what we were looking for. They have been nothing short offantastic in helping both of us throughour health issues the last several years.”
