THE EDENDALE EXPERIENCE: THINKING, LEARNING, CREATING
30 May 2013
Next issue: 12 June 2013
Message from the Principal
Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!
Our students celebrated our 104th Birthday in a variety of ways! Some of our Year One
students wrote stories, made party hats to
wear, read along with
Janet and John stories from my school days
a t Mode l Count ry School, experienced a
handwriting lesson with Matua Alan writing on a
‘ s la te ’ w i th cha l k
(very similar to lessons of my childhood; who
remembers ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’?) Year Two
students participated in callisthenics and marching, some of the Year Threes made beautiful symmetrical
butterflies and Room 27 combined a birthday and a National Music Month activity and made this amazing cake!
Thank you to our Board of Trustees
A very special thank you to our current trustees, Khylee Quince (Chairperson), John Marsh, Mike Maitland and Roshyn Singh for their excellent governance of our school and commitment
to all staff, students and their families over the past three years. There have been numerous
challenges to address (mainly in the property area of leaky buildings remediation), which were all successfully resolved by the Board. Voting closed at midday today. The results of the new
Board election will be notified to the community via newspapers after 5th June. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday 25th June at 7:15pm; this will be a planning and training
meeting (not open to the public).
Enjoy the upcoming long weekend!
Rosemary Vivien, Principal

Garden to Table
We had a very exciting day at Edendale, celebrating International Food Revolution Day.
The whole school partook in the activity, with Room 28 being filmed live by Breakfast TV
having their pyjama party and preparing their delicious breakfast. We were baking our
Morning Glory muffins and roasted vegetable frittata. Awesome! In the garden we have been testing the pH and NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) levels in our
soil, the results are important for leaf growth, root growth and plant health and fruit. We have been
digging up huge amounts of jerusalem artichokes that are not actually from Jerusalem or an artichoke
but are related to sunflowers! In the kitchen we have been turning our artichokes into soup and making herb and cheese scones to
accompany the soup, perfect for this time of year!
We are also discussing vitamins, where they come from and why our body needs vitamins to stay
healthy. We have learnt which fruit, vegetables and herbs are super rich in vitamins (parsley, red
capsicum and broccoli). We are on the plastic milk bottle top hunt again, please leave your clean bottle tops in a container down
by our shed (outside Room 11).
Are you interested in volunteering Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for an hour or so? We would love to
hear from you; please contact Sarah or Jodie, [email protected] Sarah and Jodie
Term Three: Science Open Week and Science-a-thon
Science Open Week will take place 27th-29th August with ‘hands on’ interactive displays and experiments
happening in all classrooms. The Science-a-thon is our major school fundraising event for this year. We
wish to raise money to purchase further equipment in the areas of Science and ICT. Science-a-thon
packs, questions and sponsorship forms will be sent home on Friday 5th July. This will allow students
plenty of time over the holidays to collect sponsors and to research and learn the answers to the
Science-a-thon questions. Students will be tested in Week Two of Term Three (Wednesday 7th August)
and sponsorship money will be collected by Week 5 (Friday 31st August).
We are looking for scientists who would like to visit our school during this week!
If you would like to be involved in supporting our Science Open Week, please contact Shilpa Soysa (R22),
Jackie Procter (Deputy Principal Yr1-3) or leave a message with the office. Thank you in advance for your
support with our major fundraiser this year. Our students are looking forward to showing you some of
their amazing science learning. Shilpa Soysa (Science Curriculum Leader)
Breakfast Show last week… Good Morning this week!
A group of Yr5-6 students and R28 starred
during a Breakfast Show clip last week, here

http://tvnz.co.nz/breakfast-news/garden-
table-pyjama-party-video-5439808 A further group from our choir has been
chosen to sing with students from East
Tamaki Primary on Good Morning this Friday
as part of NZ Music Month! They will travel
to a TVNZ studio to perform which will be a
great experience! Thanks to Mr Hantler for
organising this. Mr Hantler and Miss Tong
will accompany our students. The school will
come together at 12:45pm to sing ‘Paradise’
and show some art works students have
made to celebrate Music Month.

News from Edendale’s PTA Movie Night Review
Edendale Primary PTA held a Movie Night Fundraiser on Sunday 19th May! It was a fun, indulgent night
enjoyed by all who partook in the fundraiser. We raised $2295.10 which will really help towards extra
resources and educational opportunities for the children, i.e. class trips, sports uniforms, shows and
school equipment, Garden to Table, etc.
A big thank you to all those on the PTA and the other wonderful people who worked so hard to make the
night such a great success!
Our sponsors were big contributors to the success of our fundraiser. Please take the time to look at the
businesses who sponsored us in the attached document. If you are able to, please show your
appreciation by supporting these businesses.
