“Sincemy job is to fix tyres,I had gone out and only cameback to the house at 8.30pm.After a few minutes of beinghome, weheard fivegunshotsand although they soundedclose, we were all certainthat it was not outside thehouse.

“After the gunshots, I cameout, and I was alerted by twoyoung men who claimed tohave been wanting to buyfrom Isaac’s container thatthey saw him lying down in-side the container which waslocked.

“I called the owner of thecontainertoopenforussothathecouldberushedtohospital.

But unfortunately he died onthe spot.”

Ngcobo said that a passer-bywhowas standing near thecontainer said she hadintended to buy goods fromIsaac whenhe saw twoyoungmen carrying guns, andthereafter heard gunshots.

Outrage overSona “What happened in parliament was a

total disgrace to the country. Parliamentshould take a decision about thisincident, which the whole world waswatching. The EFF members were out ofcontrol and such events should notrepeat themselves. You cannot disturb apresident while he is addressing thepeople about important matters. It’s ashame and it shows that people havelost respect.”

Christopher Ngubo:

“The ruling party (ANC) should be anexample to the whole country. Theymust have an idea, vision and missionabout themselves as a political partyand that will lead to people respecting and giving them the credit theydeserve. What happened inparliament should be a sign thatthe ANC needs to start smellingtheir own armpits before blamingothers.”

Nomathemba Hlengwa:

“Madam speaker should not havehad the EFF members thrown out ofthe chamber. In my own understanding, this means that she will alwayssort out problems by throwingpeople out. This also mean thatshe will use force as a solutionwhen she fails to answer questions that are directed at her.”

Thabani Ngcobo

“First of all, the business of the day onThursday in parliament was the Sona. Itwas not a session of questions, it was aday for the president to deliver hisspeech to the nation. They did not actlike civilised people, instead they delayedthe programme by asking the same thingover and over again. If they have a problem, they must come up with solutions.”

TALKINGFOOTBALL

Talent needs tomove forwardTHABO DLADLA

IT is now history that 2015 Afcon was won byIvory Coast.

The tournament’s records also show thatSouthAfricacamelast in theirgroup. The teamonly managed a single draw, despite showinga few glimpses of brilliance.

The personal observation from thistournament is that South Africans continue toexpect miracles.

They say Christmas comes once a year. The ‘96 generation was going to be the last

home-based team to win this tournament. There is a huge gap between our localprofessional league and the top five Europeanleagues. The fact that only Thulani Sererofeatures in the European Champions League

points to some problems with our footballeducation and development.

It takes careful planning, organization andlots of hard work to develop somethingsustainable.Afewgoodresultscanbemislead-ing, particularly in sports. Winning a fewmatches against ordinary opposition does notmakeyouchampionshipmaterial. It isalsotruethat a weak side can get an accidental resultagainst a world class team. Quality takes time, skill and commitment to excellence.

Presently, weliveinacountryoffreebiesandquick fixes. First it was Gordon Igesund, nowShakesMashabathatmustcomeupwithmira-cles. We are a nation indeed that believes a lotin miracles.

The Mandela Era did not help us to under-stand the value of sacrifice and hardwork.Weneed to learn that progress in football is notdependent on Messiahs. Talent, class andexcellent youth programmes are someof a fewthings necessary to produce continental andinternational winners.

Theissueofpatriotismwillhavetobevisitedin the future. It is going to take a few decadesto have patriotic South Africans. It is evenworse in football. The majority of us are moreinterestedinpower, prestigeandtherichesthatcome with high offices.

Wecannottalkpatriotismwhilethemajorityof young footballers practice and compete un-der deplorable conditions. We also cannot talkpatriotismwhen people in high football officesuse positions to fight those that differ withthem.

South Africa needs all its talent to moveforward. Itdoesnotmatterwhetheryoubelongto A or B team.

Unzima lo mthwalo!

friends or family, or buy plants on specialat the nursery. A few lavender bushes in arow at the front of the house can changethe whole feeling of the house.

Indoor plants also can be a nice focalpoint. Paint the paint tin you used in thesame colour as the wall, and use as a plantpot.

and simply hang them from hooks undera shelf, or on a wall this can transforma drab kitchen.

You can either go for a splash of colourand variety, or establish the colour schemeof your kitchen by choosing the samecolour.

Candlelight ambienceCandlelight creates a soft and pleasing

light — and brightly coloured candles are

inexpensive. Fill a large paper packet withsand and stick the candle in it. It createsa beautiful effect.

Bathroom bluesStuck with a seventies bathroom and

a stained old metal bath? Redoing the lotcould cost thousands. Paint the tilesyourself. Go all white, so you don’t have toworry about the grouting between thetiles.

A few bright towels, a painted woodenbox attached to the wall for storage, anda selfframed postcard or two, and thereyou go. And ditch the mouldy old showercurtain.

Visit demolition yards and garage salesWith this, you might need some

imagination and will have to do somework, but here you can find some amazingstuff at a fraction of the cost, such as Oregonpine doors and windows, old bathroom and kitchen sinks, pretty taps, evenold furniture that can be painted orstripped to be given a new lease on life.

Easy curtainingHaving curtains custommade costs a

fortune.Many shops have very reasonable

readymade lined curtains with loops.Go for a neutral colour that will fit

in with your colour scheme wherever yougo.

Fancy framesCheck out the frames in stores, and

frame stuff yourself. Make a statement byusing a piece of brightly coloured paper (afew rands at stationery shops) as a backdrop.

Empty frames in junk shops also go fornext to nothing. Buy a few, paint them andstick photos or pretty black and whitepictures or postcards in them straightagainst the wall for special effect.

Wrapping paper can be beautiful in aframe.

EDENDALE ECHO FEBRUARY 2015SUPPLEMENT

TTiippss ffoorr ffiirrsstt ttiimmee bbuuyyeerrssTHE residential property market will

be slightly skewed in favour of theseller in 2015 as last year’s

shortages continue to drive house pricesup, experts say.

“What we’ll see in 2015 is a lot moredevelopments coming online. So, I think(later in the year) it’s going to revert toa fairly neutral market. I don’t think it willbe a strong buyer’s or seller’s market,”says Richard Gray, CEO of national groupHarcourts Real Estate.

The average consumer is catching afew breaks this year.

“With petrol prices coming down, people have a bit more income, interestrates have been low for a long time now people have their heads back abovewater and buyers are not struggling asmuch with their finance,” says Gray.

It’s a sentiment shared by FNBhousehold and property sector strategistJohn Loos, who expects interest rates toremain flat for the better part of the year,as lower oil and global food prices reduceinflationary pressures.

On the plus side this will stimulateconsumers’ interest in the housingmarket but, with fewer propertiescurrently available, it will also lead to anestimated 8% increase in house prices

come yearend, he adds.Buyers’ ability to afford homes will

therefore be slightly diminished.According to FNB’s Property Barome

ter, following price growth in the previoustwo years, 2014 saw a mild deteriorationin affordability. This could well continueinto 2015 somewhat limiting buyers’property options.

“That may sound strange to some, because a lot of people think that thebetter the market is, the better theopportunities to buy but, in fact, it is quitethe opposite. Buying on the lows andselling on the highs is the bestcasescenario,” Gray says.

“But if you’re a firsttime buyer looking for a property that you are going tolive in (as opposed to buyingtolet),then timing the cycle should not really beyour focus, because you could wait yearsuntil the next bottom point. If you’re abuytolet investor then perhaps it wouldbe better to wait a while. So it reallydepends on each person’s particularsituation.”

CEO of Chas Everitt InternationalProperty Group Berry Everitt agrees thatthe residential property market is on theup.

“Buyers are going to have to bepatient in order to find the right properties at a price they can afford. But also, they should not sit on the fence (whenone comes along) because good stock

will sell quickly.”Tips for firsttime buyers* Firsttime buyers should ensure

they know how much funding theyqualify for, before they start shoppingaround, Everitt advises. They should“…not necessarily have received theirmortgage bond (because you can’t dothat until you’ve made an offer to purchase), but they should go to a mortgageoriginator…and get them to prequalifythem and find the right bank.

* Most importantly, buyers shouldn’toverextend themselves. That meansnot going for the maximum possiblebond that they qualify for, becauseeconomic conditions could alwayschange for the worse at any given time.Interest rates will eventually rise againand it is important to allow some leewayfor mortgage movement.

* Generally, spending about 30% ofyour income on a home loan repaymentis considered reasonably affordable.

* Critically, secure the lowest interestrate possible.

“People tend to accept that theirbonds require a monthly payment, whichthey have no way of influencing. In fact, there are many things that you can dothat may alter the amount of interest youend up paying and the term of yourrepayments,” said Kay Geldenhuys, property finance processing manager atbond originator Ooba.
