Theft worrying in Esigodini

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

HOUSE breakins and sellingstolengoodsisaseriouscrimethathas caused members of EsigodiniCommunity Policing (CPF) Forumto become investigative officers.Every night members of this areaare on a mission of searchinghouses of residents accused ofstealing and buying stolen goods. If these items are recovered theyare returned to the legitimateowners.

The chairperson of the CPFMduduzi Majola told Echo they areinvestigating a number of cases oftheft in the area.

“One of the targeted items isplasma televisions which are thensold cheaply. We have now become our own investigative officers to fight against this barbaric

behaviour that has become atrend. As we speak we have casesthat have been reported by community members who have beenvictims of doing this. It is knownby every individual that peoplewho commit these crimes arethe whoonga addicts. It is peoplewho are known in the community, but what is disappointing is thatthe same residents with theknowledge of what is going on buystolen goods from these thieves.

“We urge the community tostop contributing to these crimesby buying stolen goods. They mustreport these people to the policeso that they are arrested,” saidMajola.

Other areas that are faced bysimilar situations are Nhlazatshe,Ecabazini and Shayamoya. Allthese areas fall under GreaterEdendale.

Ward 12 councillor Sboniso

Majola said he is aware of the cases of house breakins and thepurchasing of stolen goods. Heurged the community to reportthefttothepoliceandtothestructures within their areas.

“Parents and everyone in thearea must know that this affectsevery individual. People must stoptaking part in these crimes bybuying stolen goods. Parents athome must play their role. Thething with whoonga is that it issold at homes and in the presenceof parents. They are aware of it,but play dumb and support thatbehaviour. It’s up to the community to fight against this,” said thecouncillor.

The CPF chairperson warnedthat the community membersshould be aware of mugging in theearly hours of the morning and inthe afternoon, especially in darkareas in the Esigodini area.

‘What Dr Nala just did is unacceptable, why I say that is because it would have been better ifhe started as Plentian from thebeginning. The other confusingfactor is that he still uses thesame Bible that Christians are

using that is a totalcontradiction of he is now saying.’

Reverend Caleb Mbokazi:

‘He started by taking a second wifewhile he was a Christian. That alonewas the opposite of Christianity. I

can’t make a clear understandingof what his intentions are. Inmy opinion I think Dr. Nala isone of the pastors of the lastdays. The Bible warned usabout these incidents and thatis exactly what is happening.’

Reverend Bethwell Zulu:

‘This is an insult to Christianity. From what Iknow as Christians, welive different lives andwe must portray a goodimage to the public. It’sa pity because we knowNala as a Christian andsuddenly that haschanged.’

AS of 1 May, children under the age ofthree will be required to only travelin a car if they are secured in a car seat.

This is required by a new regulation of theNational Road Traffic Act.

Motorists who have children under the ageof three unrestrained in their vehiclewill be fined.

This comes after some motorists refuse totake seriously the constant warnings and callsby emergency services and authorities to havechildren properly secured in vehicles.

Speaking toMaritzburg Fever Caro Smit ofSouthAfricansAgainst DrunkDriving (SADD),said the organisation has been working longtowardsgettingthisspecificregulationpassed.

According to Smit, the Medical ResearchCouncil (MRC) stated that car crashes are theleading cause of injury and/or deaths amongchildren under the age of five in South Africa.

“ArriveAlivesaysthatcorrectlyinstalledcarseats can reduce the risk of deaths by 70% inthe infantage,and47%to54%inchildrenagedone to four.”

Daily, toddlers canbe seen jumpingonbackseats, hanging out of windows and sitting onpassenger’s laps.

“Upon speaking to parents, some will tellyou theynevergrewupwithchildcarseatsandsurvived. Parents may also tell you that theirchildren do not like being restrained and cryconstantly. Some parents insist you not tellthemwhat todowith their children,” saidChit-ra Bodasing, ER24 spokesperson.

Bodasing said that emergency services at-tend to collisions involving children everyweek.

“The majority of unrestrained children areflung out of the vehicle and either sustain criti-cal injuries or die on impact.”

While the law forcesparents touse child carseats for children under theageof three, thisdoes not mean older children should not alsobe secured in a car seat.

Lastyear,SADDdistributed20newcarseatsfor children at Woodlands Primary and TPASchool in Northdale.

“We call on people to donate their old un-wanted seats to SADDandwewill get them re-furbished and handed out to needy families,”said Smit.

Car seat tips•Infants should ride rearfacing at least until theyare a year old. Once they exceed the weight orheight limit set by the manufacturer of the infantsafety seat, they should continue to ride rearfacing in a convertible safety seat. It is best to keeptoddlers rearfacing as long as possible.•When they have outgrown this seat, they shoulduse a forwardfacing safety seat with a full harness. This should be used until they exceed theweight and/or height limit set by the manufacturerof the seat.•Children who have outgrown a convertible safetyseat should use a booster seat until they are atleast four feet.•Children who are tall enough to wear an adult seatbelt should still ride in the back seat until they are13. Adjust the seat belt so the lap belt crosses thechild’s upper thighs and the diagonal belt crossesthe upper chest at a point between the neck andshoulder.

Let’s not promotehatred of one another

WHAT is happening in ourbeautiful country regard-ingthe destructionofco-

lonial and apartheid statuesat this juncture of our history iswrong.

Ihavenever seenall the colonialor apartheid figures in question, Ihave only read about them.

The ways employed in dealingwith removal of statues is totallywrong and might have direimplication for us as a diversenation.

It is taking us back in terms ofmulticultural heritage.

IwishEcho, as a people’s paper,

would conduct research and findout from the young what theiropinion is and what is going on intheir mind.

As far as I understand this issueneeds special attention fromrelevant authorities.

They must deal with itaccordingly to avoid racialdivisions among South Africans.

As young as I am, I would like tosee SouthAfricans always at peacewith each other as Mandela wouldlike to see happening.

Those statues played asignificant role to where we arenow, soIbelievetheyshouldbekept

in a certain place so that whoeverwants to remind him or herselfabout them can go there.

The fundamentalmessages thatcome with them are moreimportant than it is thought byothers.

History is part of development.Wherever you go, there is history.Let’s not destroy what is ours, weshould protect it and preserve it.

Let’s not provoke our ancestorsby promoting hatred of oneanother.

THE number of players representingKZN in the PSL and national teamshave declined over the past few

years. The midlands region in particularhas not done well both in youthcompetitions and club football.

People should also remember thatKZN is the biggest province in SouthAfrica. Numbers on their own do not helpif people are not doing the right things.Pietermaritzburg is representedonly by five players in the professionalleague compared to over twenty five afew years back.

The lack of facilities is not helping thesituation. I firmly believe that authoritiesare letting down the young people in ourdistrict. We have worse football facilitiescompared to the apartheid era. This issad considering that the majority offootballers are young black boys and girls.

League matches are played on gravelfields. Why do municipalities find itdifficult to prepare fields for weekendfixtures i.e. cut grass and mark the lines? We cannot talk service delivery andfailtheyoungpeopleonjustsimplethingslike marking the fields.

We have not promoted any team tothe NFD in the past 15 years. The calendarof competitions is disadvantagingour clubs. Planning is nonexistent.Football is played for four to five months. We lack the interest and the will to do the

correct things.SAB clubs have to play on a Saturday

and Sunday. Do football authoritiesunderstand the implication of this to thehealth of our young people. Playing asingle 90minutes match in a weekend isa challenge in itself. Technically, this alsohas a lot of implications. It develops slowfootball and yet internationally intensity is critical.

Refereeing also needs someattention. I have been very impressedwith most of the guys in our local SABleague. They do honest jobs althoughthey can do with more and bettertraining. It is important that cheating isremoved out of KZN football. Bribing ofreferees does not help improve the game.Referees themselves should understandthe implications of dishonesty in theircareers. KZN does not have referees in thetwo top tiers of South African football.

We also do not have people featuring ininternational competitions.

I would like to encourage thosehonest guys to carry on with their goodwork.Coaching itself need to improve ifour young players are to reachinternational standards. Football, justlike schooling, requires lots of dedicationfrom all parties. It is unfortunate thatcurrently South African children do nothave proper support structures bothat home and within communities.

We live in a society where theinterests of adults come first.

We expect someone else to look afterour children. Unzima lo mthwalo.

HILLVIEW FC MUST COME CLEAN-JERRY BARNES

I MUST say I was very happy to hearthat the Hillview FC Easter tourna-ment at Newholmes grounds wasgoing to take place again this year. Ibelieve thiswell-organised event hasbecome one of the crowd pullers.

I remembermanyyearsagowhenone of the long serving and hardworking members of Pietermaritz-burg andDistrict SoccerAssociation(Padsa) Kay Parus and a few otherspulledout fromthis organisationand started their own event awayfrom Northdale Stadium.

I was also there to support themand also attended their event fromday one. Although I was told orunderstood that therewere a fewdif-ferences between Padsa officials andHillviewFCmanagementatthattime,I personally did not see Parus andhisgroupasrebelsorasplinterorganisa-tion.

I saw a competition and anotherdevelopmentofourlocalsoccer. Ialsosaw more options for players, teamsand local media houses. I actually

still have a picture that I took duringthe first tournament at Newholmesgroundsofacertain junior teamfromGlenwood.

The two players that I rememberinthephotoare Brendan Bezuide-houtandPapiPetersen,whowerestillveryyoungand playingfortheunder12 side. By theway these twoplayersare grown up men now and one ofthem is happily married.

ThisweekIwasverydisappointedwhenIheard that thesame HillviewFCEaster tournament allowedoneof the local professionals PSL andChippa United player Enver Wiltwerto play for Hillview Old Boys. Whyallowaprofessional tocomecompeteagainst amateur players? It was alsoallegedthatacertainplayerwasgivenmarching orders (red card) duringthe games but was later allowed tocarry onplaying after paying a fine.

So inshort,hepaidmoney toclearhisnameandtobere-instatedintotheevent. Oh what a mistake!

As event organisers, Hillview FCofficials were just too wrong and outof line to change or overlook the redcard issued by the referee for adisciplinary reason, just to makemoney, if all this is true.

I believe events like these are notmoney making scheme but thedevelopmentof the localgameandanexercisetounearthunknown talent.

I am also aware that Hillview FCopponents and certain unhappyofficialsout thereontheoppositesidemaycookupsomenegative storiesorlookforfaultsintheevent, justtopainta black picture.

Iwould like toprofer aplatform toHillview FC officials to come outclean, explain and give us a fair andhonest answer about what exactlyhappened. My e-mail address [email protected] 9553.
