Speaking to Echo, Lindiwe Mkhize said that although they have not been issued with an evic- tion letter yet, their aunt has made it clear that they should find alternative accommoda- tion as she is selling the house. She said that all along they have been living in their grandparents’ house with their mother, as their aunt is married. After the death of their mother in May this year, their aunt Thembi Thabethe started to send them messages, telling them that they should move out of the house as their late grandfa- ther Nyakazane Nene had left it under her name. “She said that she wanted to sell the house so that she could pay the outstanding lobola debt left by our grandfather to her uncles. She said her father had left the house as a form of payment, just in case he could not finish paying the amount”, said Mkhize. She said that they have also been told to demolish the outside building which was built by their mother, so that the new house owner can decide what to do with the space. Mkhize said that last month, their aunt started sending messages again. “She asked us not to lock the gates during the day, as an estate agent will come to evaluate the house. Last week my younger brother said that an es- tate agent came, but the gate was locked and he could not come in. “He told him that he was not al- lowed to open the gate since there were no adults and he left,” said Mkhize. “Angry 75 yearold gogo stops paying rates

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]

POOR delivery of basic servicessuch as water, electricity anddecent roads has led a 75 year

BeatriceHlopheresidesinthesec-tion of Shayamoya 2 where some ofthe residents pay rates as it is part ofthe Msunduzi municipality.

Thesection that is required topayrates is not part of the landbelongingto an inkosi in the area.

Hlophe has an outstanding bill of(R17 512 still to confirm the actualamount)of rates thatshehasstoppedpaying for many years. She said herlate husband Ruphas Hlophe who

diedin1978hadboughtthelandhop-ingthat theywouldbenefit fromserv-ice provided by the municipality.

Speaking toEcho, she saidarea isworse than some rural areas sheknowsintheprovince. “Wehaveonlyonetapthatcaters for thewholecom-munity of Shayamoya 2. We still useparaffin stoves that IwasusingwhenImoved to this area in 1957. I’m stillwalkingonthegravelroadsthathaveworsened fromwhat they used to bewhen I moved to this area decadesago. “After my husband died, I con-tinued paying rates hoping thatthings would be different. It becamedifficult for me to continue payingrateswhileI’mlivinginsuchbadcon-ditions. It’s like we are living in adesert and yet some of us are expect-

ed to pay rates, how is that possible,”she asked.

Hlophewasnot clear onwhenex-actly did she stopbeing the ratespay-er. “I have stopped paying for yearsand Iwill not pay. In this day and agewe are still without electricity. Wehave become targets and victims ofthieves in the morning and at night.

“All these years I was hoping thatthis areawill finallybedevelopedbutit has not. It’s like the municipalityand the ward councillor do not exist, they are doing nothing for the resi-dents of this area,” she said. Hlophewas among the Shayamoya 2 resi-dents who marched to city hall lastweek demanding that the munici-paltiy provide these lacking services.

Long cellphone chatscould be damaging>> It could lead to the formation of itchy red bumps and blisters

SPEAKING endlessly on your cellphone canlead to an allergic reaction, warns a leadingpharmaceutical company, specialising in al-

lergy treatments.In a press release,MariskaFouche, spokesper-

sonforPharmaDynamicssaysthecompany’saller-gy helpline has fielded dozens of calls in recentmonths from members of the public enquiringaboutwhether theircellphonesare toblamefor theitchy, red bumps and blisters along their jaws, cheeks and ears.

“While it isoftenreferredtoasacellphonealler-gy, it is actually a nickel allergy,” remarks Fouche.

“If you consider that the average cellphone usermakes or receives an average of 22 phone calls adayandcheckstheirphoneeverysixandahalfmin-utes, the prolonged exposure to nickel – a metalwhich is often used in cellphone buttons, headsetsand LCD screen frames – can be the likely cause ofthe allergy.

“Nickel isoneof themostcommoncontactaller-gens.Eventhoughtherearen’tanystatisticsavaila-bleforSouthAfrica,expertssuggestthatfiguresarecomparablewith that of theUK,where1 in10peo-plesufferfromanickelallergy.Worldwidetherehasbeen an increase in the number of cellphone or

rather nickel allergies reported, particularlyamongteenagers, whocaneasilyspendhalfthedayon their phones, texting, talking, checking Face-book, playing games and listening to music.

“Somemight only get a small rash, which goesalmost unnoticed, so it is likely that the increase incellphoneallergiesaremuchhigherthanisactuallybeing reported,” she says.

Usually the contact with other objects contain-ing nickel, such as keys and coins are brief, so theallergy may not become immediately apparent.Therisk,however,isincreasedbyfrequentandpro-longed contact with nickel-containing items such

Mandela movie:Long walk to freedom

“I strongly believe that itwas totally wrong of themto give the role to an international actor. Theyshould be encouraging theSouth African actors notinternational actors. ASouth African like LuthuliDlamini (who plays ScottNomvete in Generations)would have fitted in therole of Mandela and SoniaSedibe would have beengreat for the role of WinnieMadikizelaMandela.”

Sipho Sithole

“I don’t see anythingwrong by taking international stars to play theleading roles. Yes, we dohave good actors in thecountry like Menzi Ngubane who would been theright fit for the Mandelarole but I’m happy withtheir choice of international stars.”

Sbonelo Magwenyane

“They should have grantedthe role to a South African actor not an international star. A South African actor relates to thestory, he would haveknown about apartheidand some of the incidentsof apartheid would havebeen told to him by hiselders if he did not experience a pinch of them himself.”

The Mandela Long Walk to Freedom movie which is about Nelson Mandela’s life is set to be released later this month. The two leading roles are played by Londonactor and actress. Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris plays former wife Winnie MadikizelaMandela. South African Tony Kgoroge plays Walter Sisuluand Terry Pheto plays Evelyn (Nelson Mandela’s first wife). With both leading roles given to international stars,NOMPENDULO NGUBANE took to the streets to find out what people have to say.

as cellphones and jewellery for example.Fouche notes that women are more likely

thanmen to develop the allergy, because theywere possibly sensitised earlier in life whenthey had their ears pierced, which can intro-duce nickel into the bloodstream.

“When the ear is pierced, an earring studis left in the ear to keep the hole open until theskin around it heals. Since the piercing is anopenwound, the nickel salts are able to enterthe bloodstream and break down the body’snatural resistance.

“The reason why somany people are sus-ceptible tonickelallergies isbecausethemetaldissolves in moisture, forming salts. For ex-ample,when someone sweatswhile speakingon their nickel-containing-cellphone, saltsformand the skinbecomes inflamed.Nickel isa strong irritant and repeated contact with itcan weaken the body’s resistance,” she says.

He continues to say an allergic reaction tometalscanbeahighlyirritatingandevenpain-ful experience. Symptoms range from red-ness, itching, swelling, blistering, skin lesionsto eczema and sometimes oozing or scarringmay also occur.

WITH the construction of the Msunduzi Tour-ism hub nearing its completion, an amount ofR2.4millionhasbeenapprovedfortherehabil-itation of the publicity house.

“The funding that will be used is unspentfunding from for the Msimang museum con-struction”.

Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg tourism asso-ciation director Dumisani Mhlongo said: “Weare excited about the initiative.

TALKINGFOOTBALL

FOOTBALL challenges in South Afri-ca shouldnot bedivorced frompoliti-cal, social and economic challenges.Football is an activity wheremany of

our people are involved.Presently, unemployment figures

are too high. This has an effect on thesocio-economic status of many ofSouthAfricans.Wecannot talkof jun-ior leagues if there are no footballclubs within communities.

Themajorityofpeoplearebattlingfor basic things like food, medicalcare, accommodation etc. It is scan-dalous therefore tospend fortunesonparties or events under such condi-tionsofpoverty.Alotofmoneyisspentonlunchesforofficialswhiletherearenofacilitiesandequipmentforsports.Itisunfortunatethatwetendtosupplythosethatarealreadyfatwhilepoten-tial stars are starving.

It is a challenge to get the best outof starving children. One needs ener-gy to train and compete effectively.

Football challenges thereforeshould be addressed with problemsof food production, skills develop-ment, service delivery, and drug andalcohol abuse. Development of topfootballers is not just training in thefields. It involves everyone includingparents, councillors, churches andschools.Wehavesaid thisbefore thatthough leadership is important, indi-viduals cannot be expected to per-formmiracles.Locally,howdoween-sure that young people take theirplaces among the elite footballers inthis country? Itwill involve co-opera-

tion instead of petty jealousies. Ac-quiring knowledge and its applica-tion, hardwork and desire tomake adifference in the lives of the young.

Empowerment of the young is notjust about money. We can also sup-portpeoplethroughusingourtalents,time and love. Pietermaritzburg hasgiven South Africa top footballers inthe past. The present generation ofyoung people have our genes. Theywill not succeed or work to their fullpotential unless we as leaders andadults playour role.Weneed tomoveaway from the mentality that moneycan do everything.

Many of us became footballersthrough sacrifices of the previous

generation. The present free SouthAfrica is also a product of sacrificesmadebyourparentsand forefathers. We can do it. We just have to focusmore on important things than deal-ing with petty issues. Knowledge, dedication and hard work are whatcan make young people in our townexcel. Managers and coaches shouldtake responsibility in creating a cul-ture of excellence.Unzima lomthwa-lo!

Outdoor gym forHowick residents>> ‘Free outdoor gyms will be extended to other areas’

RESIDENTSaroundHowickunderuMngeniMunicipalitywillbeableto train free of charge in a gym

built outdoors for them.Last Thursday people from various

sections of Howick such asMpophome-ni, Cedara,HowickWest,Hhaza, Shiya-bazali and others gathered at uMngenisports complex to attend the officialopening of the unusual outdoor yetworld class gym.

Thefunctionattractedalotofmunici-pality councillors and government offi-cials from the KwaZulu-Natal Depart-ment of Sports andRecreation, ledMECNtombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha.

Sibhida-Saphetha said the new out-door gym was one of the governmentsongoingprojects to encouragepeople tolive healthy lifesyles by training theirbodies.

She challenged the members of thepublic to make sure their bodies werelooking nice and trimmed when shecomes back in a few weeks time for an-other project.

“I am saying downwith the big tum-mies, down! I am saying down with theshapelessbodies, down!Whenwecome

back for another project in the Shiyaba-zali area, I want to see good looking la-dies with figured bodies.

“To men, I want to see those broadstraight shoulders.

I wants to see six packs not big andround stomachs. The fact is if we trainour bodies we will live long and stayhealthy,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.

UMngeni mayor Mbali Myeni urgedthe community to use the facilities andlook after it.

“Weare lucky,wewon’t pay a cent totrainourbodies.Let’susethese facilitieswiselyandmakesure thatwedon’t van-dalise them.We don’t want to see thesefacilities becoming white elephants,”she said.

Sports and Recreation uMgungund-lovu district manager Busi Nkomo saysfree outdoor gyms will be extended tootherareasorwardsaroundthedistrict.

“As the MEC pointed out, this is notthe endof it.Weare lookingat other are-as because the government’s aim is tobuild a healthy nation and force thatmentalitytoliveaheathlylifestylewithinour communities,”said Nkomo.- JerryBarnes

1 deck headlinehereHANK McGregor and JasperMocké powered to an impressivevictoryinSouthAfrica’s premier oneday canoeing race, the OzzieGladwin, presented byParklane Superspar, onSunday. In the women’s race, Abby

Adie and Anna Adamovádominated to finish a strong21st overall.“We didn’t know whatto expect. We’re upagainst pure Dusicrews here and I said toJasper just before thestart we have to tryand stay in contentionand hopefully catchup on the water, butwe seemed to dominate the portage andwe got out first and put in first, so that’s a bigconfidence boost for the two of us so early inthe season,” said McGregor after clinching victory.“It was fun. We had enough of a buffer and we

didn’t leave anything to chance.”The pair’s victory comes on the heels of their

win in the Vaal Canoe Marathon last weekend, which also served as SA K2 River MarathonChampionships.“We got into the boat for the first time just over

a week ago, just before the Vaal, and straightaway felt nice and comfortable,” said Mocké.Conditions were cool and windless and the Al

bert Falls Dam flat, making for a very faststart to the event over the 4km lap

that led to the 1km run around thedam wall.

At the takeout, McGregor andMocke led into the portage, with Andy Birkett andSbonelo Zondi just behindtheminsecond,CamSchoe

man and Jakub Adam inthird, followed by Len Jenkins

and Matt Bouman in fourth, and reigning Dusi K1 champion

Lance Kime and Thulani Mbanjwa infifth.

McGregor and Mockéunderlined their fineform and fitness byreaching the water firstafter the portage, withBirkett and Zondi holding onto second andKime and Mbanjwamoving up to third. The two leading boats

then managed to open a gap on the other chasers until, at The Cascades rapids, McGregor andMocké put the hammer down and pulled clearto win by 49 seconds over Birkett and Zondi.Cam Schoeman and Jakub Adam were in posi

tion to capture third, but they suffered a bentrudder about a kilometreandahalf from thefinish and were passed firstly by Kime andMbanjwa and then by Jenkins and Bouman.“The race was very tough,” Zondi said after fin

ishing. “There were a lot of good combinations,

especially on the dam where six boats jumpedto the front together.”While he admitted to not being fully satisfied

with their performance on the day, threetimeDusi champ Andy Birkett said he was satisfiedwith the rapid improvements the pair was making every time they paddle together.“It was a tough race today,” said third place finisher Michael Mbanjwa. “I think we did alright. The field was very strong and Hank and Jasperare flying! Sbonelo and Andy are also very strongand managed to keep with up with them, wherewe couldn’t. But I think we’re getting better every day.”“We’re trying to not read too much into results

as this early stage, but we did notice that Hankand Jasper were very, very strong,” said LanceKime. “We know their paddling will always bephenomenal and they also ran very well today.Andy and Sbonelo are also great allroundersand they are both going to be very difficult tobeat in the Dusi.”Women’s winners Adie and Adamová bent theirrudder at the Cascades Rapid, but not even theloss of one or two minutes put them under pressure.“We’ve had a good day,” said Adie. “It was quiterelaxed, especially on the dam. We just hungwith the other girls and then just before the portage we put in an interval and broke ahead. Fromthe portage there was no looking back and wepulled away.”“It was so hard,” Adamová laughed as she de

scribed the portage. The Czech star recently finished second in the K1 division and third in theK2s at the Marathon World Championships andbased upon the pair’s early season form, theyare going to very tough to beat in the 2014 DusiCanoe Marathon.
