PROMPTED by the recentxenophobic attacks across thecountry, a KwaDambuza poethas written a poem in a bid toconscientise people about theoutbreak.

Sfiso ‘Inkunzi Yomthakathi’Makhanya (28), originally fromBulwer but who now lives inKwaDambuza, toldEchothathispoem titled “I see, you have for-gotten” is aimed at reviving thespirit of humanity among SouthAfricans.

Despite writing the poem in2008duringthefirstxenophobicattacks in the country, he saidliving in KwaDambuza where

theseattackswererifemadehimrealise there is a lot that needs tobe done in educating peopleabout the stigma.

“Although I had written itbefore, the latest incidents haveprompted me to retouch it in awaythatitwillappealmoretothetargeted audience.

“InthepoemIaskSouth Afri-cans if they have forgotten thatduring the struggle, many Afri-can countries also played a rolein bringing about democracy.

“Some of us originate fromAfrican countries, but are nowbased here. You also cannot callanother African citizen living inanother African continent aforeigner.InthispoemIquotetheformer President Thabo Mbeki

in his famous ‘I am an African’speech.

“I also make relevance to theFreedom Charter which statesthatAfricawillhavetheopportu-nity of contributing towards is-sues which affect the Africancontinent.”

Makhanya said it is painful tosee South African citizens de-stroyingproperty thatbelongs totheir fellow citizens, as foreignnationals are renting from localpeople.

“There is somuch thatpeopleneed to be educated about. Thefact thattheyareusingderogato-ry words is verbal abuse. AsAfricans we need to unite.”

Makhanya is no stranger topoetry, having performed at the

opening of the Brazil,Russia, India, China andSouth Africa (Brics) in2013 where he preachedabout unity betweencountries.

“My poetry is about edu-tainmentwhereIspeakaboutsocietal issues, substantiatingthem with facts.”

He is currently going to cityschools with local poetswhere they also teachpupils aboutxenophobiathroughthespokenword.

We need todirty ourhandsTHE violence currently engulfingthe province is badnews. Itwouldbe too simply to apportion blametobothsetsofthewarringfactions. The social and economicchallenges are immense.

A few weeks ago a formerprofessional team-mate wasconsidering suicide because ofunemployment. We are sitting ona time bomb.I am sure you arewondering what this has to dowith football. Last week I raisedthe issue of declining numbersof footballers fromthisprovince inthePSL.Inourtown,Pietermaritz-burg, we have seen a decliningnumber of football facilities. The

few remaining are in a terriblestate. It isashamethat thecurrentgeneration of footballers play inworsefacilitiesthanthoseenjoyedbyus during thedifficult times.

It is critical that black peoplestart loving themselves.Apartheid has done someirreparable damage to our brain.Theservicethatisgiventoourownpeople is pathetic. The quality ofcoaching, facilities, equipment, administration all determinewhether people are going tosucceedor fail. Ourpeopleneed tobeskilled inorder tocompetewithothers fairly in the job market. Idoubt ifwe are doing a good job inthe above aspects.

It is sad that a lot of resourcesare spent hosting internationalevents while many of our youthslack skills and are unemployable.Weall need todirty ourhandsanddo things that will empower theyouth of this country. Politics donot feed, clothe andhouse people.

People need to put their egosaside and do the right things toprevent our beautiful countryfrom deteriorating further.Empowerpeoplewithmeaningfulskills to prevent young peoplefrom becoming frustrated.

Unzima lo mthwalo.

UrbanWarriorsheadcoachRogerDe Sa says their assignment againstthe Pretoria outfit will be interestingand tough.

“SuperSport United will be inter-

esting visitors. We respect them andwe are just lucky this game will behosted by us.

“We will try our best to representour followers in our back yard in agood way. We are also lucky becausewe are familiar with weather condi-tions in Cape Town and our visitorsare also likely to find it interesting,”said De Sa.

OneofUnited’slong-servingmem-bers and star defender ThaboSeptember this week told Echo hissidewill be careful as visitors and ex-pect endless fireworks.

“Weareexpectinga toughone, es-pecially as visitors. We are also ex-pectingthemtocomeatus fromalldi-rections and make conditions toughfor us. I expect endless fireworks,”said September.

The other semi-finals, the secondone, is scheduled for Sunday whenVascoDaGamafromthenationalfirstdivision and Cape Town will lockhorns with Mamelodi Sundowns atLucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

Da Gama’s leading goal scorerMbulelo Wambi says their approachwill be cautious because their oppo-nents areabig teamwhoalsowant tobe in the final.

“We respect them as PSL giants, but we know that if we win this, wewill already be in the final,” saidWambi.

Sundowns head coach PitsoMosimane believes the only way toovercome the visitorswill be to go forthe kill from the first whistle because“there are no small teams in the cupgames”.

EDENDALE ECHO SUPPLEMENT APRIL 2015

More than meets the eyeALTHOUGH it is the appear

ance of a home that buyersoften fall in love with, there

is sometimes more to a home thanmeets the eye.

This is according to AdrianGoslett, CEO of Re/Max ofSouthern Africa.

“Purchasing a property is alarge investment. In fact, for manyit is the largest financialinvestment they will ever make.”

For this reason it is importantthat buyers take time and givetheir decision the necessaryconsideration it requires beforebuying, he says.

Goslett provides buyers withthe top five potential defects tolook for:

Cracks in the foundation wallsWhile this may sound like they

are fairly easy to spot, cracks canbe hidden by layers of plaster andpaint. “Not every crack will meanthat there is a major defecthowever, some cracks couldindicate structural damage thatwill be extremely costly to fix.

Roof damageYellowing marks on the ceiling

arenormallyanindicationthattheroof is leaking. This should not beignored and if not repaired, couldresult in structural damage ordamp in the walls.

Foundation drainage

There must be sufficient andeffective water drainage aroundthe exterior of the home to avoidwater pooling or damp problemsin the lowlying areas of the property.

Faulty electrical systemLegislation requires the home

owner to be in possession of a validElectrical Certificate of Compliance (ECOC), which will ensurethat the electrical work andinstallations are safe and meetthe required regulations of theSouth African National Standards.

Plumbing problemsPlumbing issues are often

difficult to detect or check, as theproblem may be underground. Themore common defects includeoutdated piping materials andfaulty fixtures.

“Taking the time to ensure thatthe property is in good repair mayrequire some initial work on thebuyer’s part, however, the timeand effort will pay off in the longrun by providing the buyer with anappreciating asset that grows invalue,” Goslett says.
