School Information

Our Playground After School Hours

Increasing numbers of students are seen on our playground area after school. It

is fine for them to have a short play after school, while parents are catching up

with each other as long as you (the parents) are closely supervising your own

children. We do not provide after-hours supervision on the adventure play-

grounds. Please ensure that you are close by your child/children as they play.

Please do not send your child to play while you are in another area of the

school.

A reminder that wheels such as bikes and scooters are to be wheeled while on

the school premises; students should not be riding around on these. If they are

brought to school, safety equipment must be worn.

Unsupervised students are not allowed to play after school, they are expected to

go straight home.

Thank you for your support with this. We do appreciate it!

Review of the Ministry of Education (link: control click)

The Performance Improvement Framework (PIF) review of the Ministry of

Education has been posted today (State Services Commission website).

This is a comprehensive review and includes positive information about New

Zealand’s education system, quote: ‘which is so highly regarded throughout the

world...’ confirming what most of us do know about our education in NZ. The

report goes on to say that...quote: ‘We can be justifiably proud of our world

leading education system and the students within it who are consistently ranked

among the top performing students internationally.’

‘We’ in the sentence above pertains to Ministry of Education staff who state that

their own leadership, staff and work with teachers and parents has played a

direct part in the successes of our NZ students.

I would like to acknowledge here, our own staff, students, Board, PTA and wider

community for the tremendous work you all do in supporting our students with

their learning at school; we have a great partnership and work very hard

together towards continuous improvement for our students. We can be

justifiably proud of our achievements!

It was good to see that one of the areas the Ministry has tagged for

improvement is property; we are now seeking a ministerial review of the process

regarding the non-repayment to date of funds due to the school, prior to

considering further action.

After-School Hours Care: School’s Out

I received a complaint from a neighbour last week regarding the behaviour of

some of our children while they were waiting to be picked up by the ‘Schools

Out’ van.

I subsequently went down to the back gate on a few occasions to observe. I

have now spoken with the worker who waits with them and the centre manager

to let them know that we expect our children to be carefully managed while they

wait. I also asked that our children be picked up promptly after 3:00pm as they

were not picked up until almost 3:30pm (which I understand has happened on a

number of occasions). As there was not enough room in the van to accommo-

date all children some then had to walk with the supervisor to the centre.

Children have not been too happy about waiting and then having to walk. I was

pleased to hear that on Tuesday this week, the driver returned to pick up the

remaining children. If you have any concerns about your child’s care please

contact the centre directly and make your concerns known to them.

Well done Netballers!

Congratulations to our ‘A’ Netball

Team who are the proud winners of

the Eden/Albert Interschool Netball

Competition. They played Balmoral in

the grand final and won 4-3!

Congratulations also to our ‘B’ Team

who were placed fourth in the

competition. Both teams performed

extremely well and the sportsmanship

was excellent - we’re very proud of

you all! Thank you to all the parents

that came along to support the girls,

it was a great day. Rosemary Vivien

Message from our Community Constable

Welcome back everyone! It’s Term 3 already and the Rugby World Cup is fast approaching.

In an earlier newsletter I asked parents and caregivers to take that extra second and set a good example around the

school for both their children and those around.

I am disappointed to have received a number of complaints recently about drivers and pedestrians regarding parking,

driving, and the behaviour of some pedestrians before and after school. This includes blocking driveways, using the

KiNZ car park, not giving way to pedestrians who are using the footpath and arguments between parents/caregivers.

If this is happening I expect it will stop immediately and that the adults concerned will set a better example for all the

students.

However if these issues continue, then I am more than happy to assist the school in its efforts to create a safe

environment for its students. For the traffic complaints I will involve the local traffic unit who will target the immediate

area and issue tickets on the spot.

Some examples of 'tickets' that may be issued are: blocking driveways $60, stopping on broken yellow lines $60,

expired registrations and WOFs $200 each, and anyone not wearing a seatbelt $150. You are responsible for your own

actions, or lack thereof. This may cause delays to your journey time as a result of vehicle checks, so your co-operation

now can help avoid this.

Last term I had the pleasure of spending two weeks in the school with a colleague, assisting the staff present the

'Keeping Ourselves Safe' programme. I was most impressed with the students as a whole and how well they took the

programme in. I look forward to working with the school in the near future with more programmes.

I would also like to thank the Crossing Monitors for turning up each day and doing a great job this year. You can be

proud of your efforts and I know the 8 new additions will continue this great work done so far.

Keep safe everyone, Constable Peter, Youth Education Services.

All welcome to attend

We need your help. The PTA is run by a wonderful bunch of Edendale parents who aim to generate additional funds to enhance our children’s experience at this school. We meet the third Thursday of every month in the school meeting room (next to the office) to brainstorm ideas and plan fundraisers. It would be great to have some new members join our team. We’d love to see you at the next meeting on Thursday 18 August at 7.00pm.

IRON BRION IS COMING TO SCHOOL!

The Iron Brion BBQ Roadshow is a fun, interactive show, teaching

primary school children about the four basic food groups and the

importance of eating a well-balanced diet.

The show takes 45 minutes, at the end of which all children will be

served a healthy Heart Tick approved beef & salad/vege burger.

Iron Brion was developed by Beef+Lamb NZ because young New

Zealand children have surprisingly high rates of iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency can have a detrimental impact on concentration

and energy levels, which can hamper children’s learning at a

critical age.

Iron Brion is visiting us Wednesday 31st August for

three shows: 9:30am for Years 1&2, 11:30am for

Years 3&4 and 1:30pm for Years 5&6.

We will need the assistance of 6-8 parent helpers

per show. If you are able to help, please see

Mr Wilson in Room 24 or email

[email protected].

Blockhouse Bay Intermediate—Open Day

For those considering our school as a possible intermediate for 2012, we are holding an Open Day for Year 6 students and their parents on Monday 22 August, 9:20am—11:45am. Parents are welcome to drop off and pick up their children or stay for the visit.

Address: Bolton Street, Blockhouse Bay - Phone: 09 626 6414

Boys Class 2012

There will be a meeting in the staffroom on Tuesday 30 August 6:00pm for parents of Year 4 & 5 boys who are interested in having their son in an all boys class in 2012. Any queries, please email Mr Wilson on [email protected].

New Item — Big News!

Butter Chicken Wednesdays

Starting September

A New Flag for

New Zealand?

I think that we

should keep our New

Zealand flag because

I just like the New

Zealand flag.

Australia has kind of

got the same stuff on

their flag. I think

that is good because

we are quite close to

each other.

Do not change it be-

cause I like it! If you

get mixed up look in

a flag book!

Christopher

Change the Flag!

I think we should

change the New

Zealand flag because

some people get con-

fused with the New

Zealand flag and the

Australian flag.

Sometimes you might

vote for the wrong

team. Some people

might even think you’re

Australian. It’s not

unique. Also it doesn’t

symbolise New

Zealand. It should

symbolise Maori people

because they were first

ones to come to New

Zealand.

Do you want everyone

to think you come from

Australia? Of course

not! Then change the

New Zealand flag!

Kaifa

Last term the Koru Team learned about

flags. We looked at flags around the world and compared them to our New Zealand

flag. Some of us thought the New Zealand flag should be changed and others thought it

should stay the same.
