New Directions for Teaching and Technology inthe Age of “Access Education”

DR. MICHAEL GEIST

Dr. Michael Geist is a law professor at the University of Ottawa where he

holds the Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law. He has

obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Osgoode Hall Law Schoo

in Toronto, Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from Cambridge University inthe UK and Columbia Law School in New York, and a Doctorate in Law

(J.S.D.) from Columbia Law School. Dr. Geist is a syndicated columnist on

technology law issues with his regular column appearing in the Toronto

Star  and the Ottawa Citizen. Dr. Geist is the editor of several copyright

books including The Copyright Pentalogy: How the Supreme Court of

Canada Shook the Foundations of Canadian Copyright Law (2013, University of Ottawa Press), From

“Radical Extremism” to “Balanced Copyright”: Canadian Copyright and the Digital Agenda (2010,

Irwin Law) and In the Public Interest: The Future of Canadian Copyright Law (2005, Irwin Law). He is

also the editor of several monthly technology law publications, and the author of a popular blog onInternet and intellectual property law issues. In 2010, Managing Intellectual Property named him one

of the 50 most inuential people on intellectual property in the world and Canadian Lawyer named

him one of the 25 most inuential lawyers in Canada in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Dr. Geist’s presentation will examine the recent arc of law, technology, and education and the

extraordinary changes that have taken place over the past 15 years. Canadian schools had restrictive

copyright, limited bandwidth, classrooms with limited technological capabilities, and virtually no

awareness of open access. Viewed through that prism, the past 15 years have been remarkable with

a near-complete overhaul of copyright laws, far better distribution of technology, new online teaching

models, and the emergence of open access. Yet despite the transformation, many are still left with

a sense of unease. Michael Geist will address these concerns head-on, exploring the downsides of

these developments and the risks that we face as we search for “new directions” in law, technology

and education.
