For all South Africans, 2014 is a milestone. We celebrate twenty years of our democracy, but also we look back at the years where those heroes who said enough is enough incubated our new narrative. They are our heroes and icons. This year we put on a festival where our African artists keep on saying to the world that South Africa has stories to tell, that speak to the collective memory of who we are as a nation. And yet we are also weaving new narratives that speak of where we as artists are today, stories that link us with the world. Our festival this year once again will take further the stories, the hopes and aspirations of our young people and new generations. As artistic director, I have striven to showcase these feelings in the plays, music and dance that I curated, an installation of works that have a strong Southern African flavour to them. In 2014 we host a vibrant festival that will excite our audiences and persuade them to join in.

De 11e editie van het Afrovibes festival staat voor u, met internationaal erkende kunstenaars uit Afrika én talent uit Nederland. Dit jaar staat het festival in het teken van nieuwe helden en iconen. Wie zijn de helden van weleer en wie zijn onze nieuwe helden? Hoe vinden we onze helden terug in de kunst, in theater, dans en design uit Zuidelijk Afrika en uit Nederland? Het festival wordt in twee landen, Nederland en Engeland gehouden in 20 steden.

Met trots presenteren wij u ons programma met helden en iconen als Steve Biko, vrijheidsstrijders, vechters voor democratie en klassieke helden uit de Europese toneelliteratuur. Zo brengt dansgezelschap Jazzart uit Kaapstad Biko’s Quest, over het leven van Steve Biko. We verwelkomen ook een aantal culturele helden uit Zuid- Afrika. Nelisiwe Xaba, een van Zuid-Afrika’s prominente choreografen geeft in Uncles & Angels een kritische overrompelende kijk op oude tradities als kuisheid en maagdelijkheidtesten. Mike van Graan, een van Zuid-Afrika’s belangrijkste schrijvers graaft in zijn nieuwste toneelvoorstelling Rainbow Scars met humor en spanning in de complexiteit van menselijke relaties. Correspondent Bram Vermeulen spreekt hierover met van Graan. En in The Revivalists tonen jonge theatermakers in samenwerking met een dj wat de klassieke helden uit het Europese toneel kunnen betekenen voor jonge generaties van nu.

Nieuwe helden en iconen zijn ook de rode draad in het randprogramma, met debat, post show talks, masterclasses, artistic exchanges, design expo en een artists in residency programma. Met ons randprogramma verbinden wij kunstenaars uit Afrika met Nederlands talent. Dat vinden wij belangrijk, omdat we over grenzen willen blijven kijken en internationale kunstenaars en publiek willen verbinden.

Wij danken alle partners die ons steunen en ons helpen het Afrovibes festival opnieuw mogelijk te maken en dit programma te presenteren. Samen met hen nodigen wij u uit voor zestien actuele producties en creaties uit Zuid-Afrika, Mozambique en Nederland.

Afrovibes brengt een publieksknaller van formaat: Biko’s Quest, een energieke danstheatervoorstelling over het leven en de dood van Steve Biko. Na Nelson Mandela is mensenrechtenheld en leider van de zwarte bewustzijnsbeweging Biko een van de grootste helden van Zuid-Afrika. De tien dansers en acteurs onderzoeken de hedendaagse relevantie van Steve Biko als icoon van een nieuwe generatie. Dit resulteert in een explosie van muziek en dans, qua energie en intensiteit zelden geëvenaard op Afrovibes. ‘Powerful, thought-provoking, moving and unforgettable’. (Cape Times)

Afrovibes brings a crowd stunner: Biko’s Quest, a powerful, energetic large cast dance-theatre production about the life and death of Steve Biko. After Nelson Mandela one of the greatest heroes of South Africa as leader of the black consciousness movement. In Jazzart’s dazzling interpretation the ten dancers and actors explore the contemporary relevance of Steve Biko as an icon of a new generation, resulting in an explosion of music and dance with an intensity rarely matched in Afrovibes.

Deze solo-dansvoorstelling van Themba Dredz Mbuli boekt zowel in Zuid-Afrika als wereldwijd successen op dansfestivals en in theaters. Met een theatrale fusie van moderne dans en videoprojectie, stelt Dark Cell de schrijnende omstandigheden van politieke gevangenen in Zuid-Afrika tijdens de apartheid aan de kaak. Dark Cell vertelt het verhaal van isolatie en ontmenselijking; hoe de geest de ergste gevangenis kan zijn voor een mens. Na Zweden, Oeganda, Zimbabwe, Zuid-Afrika en Argentinië is Dark Cell nu voor het eerst in Nederland te zien.

Drawing inspiration from detention conditions of political prisoners on South Africa’s Robben Island, this award-winning solo dance performance of Themba Mbuli Dredz uses the concept of a prison cell as a metaphor for mental imprisonment. With a theatrical fusion of contemporary dance and video projections, Dark Cell tells a story of how the mind can be a man’s worst prison. Dark Cell has been performed in Sweden, Uganda, Zimbabwe South Africa and Argentina before coming to The Netherlands.

Marrabenta is een Mozambikaanse muziekvorm ontstaan in de jaren ’50 en ’60 in de clubs van Maputo. Het is een mix van Portugese folk, Mozambikaanse ritmes en Westerse pop. De muziek draagt de complexe historie van Mozambique met zich mee. Die geschiedenis wil danser en choreograaf Panaibra Gabriel Canda, oprichter van het eerste moderne dansgezelschap in zijn land, voelbaar maken in The Marrabenta Solos. Marrabenta is the music that emerged in the 50s and 60s in the Maputo clubbing scene. A mix of Portuguese folk, Mozambican rhythms and Western pop. The music carries the complex history of Mozambique. In Marrabenta Solos, dancer and choreographer Panaibra Gabriel Canda, founder of the first modern dance company in Mozambique, makes the complex history of his country palpable. Als vooraanstaand choreograaf en danser uit Zuid-Afrika heeft Nelisiwe Xaba een bomvolle agenda met optredens over de hele wereld. Speciaal voor Afrovibes maakte Xaba ruimte vrij voor haar dans- en videoproductie Uncles & Angels. Centraal staat de Riet Dans, een culturele ceremonie in Zuid-Afrika rondom maagdelijkheid. Voor veel meisjes een belangrijke traditie, maar omstreden omdat zij geregeld slachtoffer worden van seksueel geweld. In Uncles & Angels geven Xaba en videokunstenaar van Veuren een kritische blik op deze culturele erfenis, met een adembenemende interactie tussen dans en live videobeelden. Eerder te zien op o.a. Theater der Welt, Festival d’Automne en op tour in de VS.

Especially for Afrovibes, South Africa’s famous choreographer and dancer Nelisiwe Xaba rearranged her agenda to perform her dance and video production Uncles & Angels. Central to this piece is the Reed Dance, a colourful South-African celebration to preserve the custom of girls remaining virgin until marriage. For many girls an important tradition, but controversial as they regularly become victims of sexual violence. In Uncles & Angels, Xaba and video artist van Veuren provide a critical look at this cultural legacy through a breathtaking use of interactive dance and video. Previously performed at Theater der Welt (Germany), Festival d’Automne (Paris) and on tour in the USA.

Het boek van correspondent Bram Vermeulen ‘Help, ik ben blank geworden’ gaat over de moord op vier zwarte Zuid-Afrikanen door een 18-jarige blanke jongen, in het township Skierlik. Theatermaker Phillip Dikotla vertelt het verhaal van Thomas, wiens vrouw en baby bij deze tragedie zijn omgekomen. Thomas keert terug naar Skierlik om het verleden onder ogen te zien. De voorstelling maakt duidelijk hoe kwetsbaar en complex het ‘nieuwe Zuid-Afrika’ is. Dikotla vertelt dit met een gevoel voor humor die zijn verhaal dragelijk en menselijk maakt. Hij ontving dit jaar de prestigieuze Zuid-Afrikaanse Fleur du Cap prijs voor Skierlik.

Phillip Dikotla’s award-winning play Skierlik, tells about the murder of four black South Africans by a white farmer’s son in the township of Skierlik. A father travels back to the home he abandoned after his wife and baby were shot. We follow his thoughts and emotions as he returns, to face the past. Dikotla’s solo performance shows the fragility and complexity of the ‘new South Africa’, presented with a sense of humor that makes the story human and bearable. For Skierlik, Dikotla received the prestigious Fleur du Cap in South Africa.

Rainbow Scars is een symbiose van twee gevestigde namen: Mike van Graan, Zuid-Afrika’s belangrijkste schrijver van dit moment en regisseur Lara Bye. Samen maken zij een theatervoorstelling over de complexiteit van relaties in hedendaags Zuid-Afrika, verteld en gespeeld vol spanning en humor. Het verhaal gaat over Lindiwe, een zwarte puber geadopteerd door blanke ouders. Zij lijken het ideale, harmonieuze multiculturele gezin te vormen totdat Lindiwe’s neef voor de deur staat. Dit zet de moeder-dochter relatie onder grote druk en onthult de littekens en de mythes van de ‘regenboognatie’.

Mike van Graan, South Africa’s most important writer and director Lara Bye made this play about the complexity of relationships in contemporary South Africa. The story tells us about Lindiwe: a black adolescent, adopted by white parents when she was a toddler. They seem like the ideal, harmonious multicultural family, until Lindiwe’s cousin arrives at their doorstep. This pressurizes the relationship between mother and daughter, revealing the scars and myths of the ‘rainbow nation’.

Wat betekent het om zwart te zijn in een blanke wereld? In de voorstelling Black Notice geeft Ntando Cele hier antwoord op. Zij komt met een absurdistische show, waarin zij de rol speelt van haar alter-ego Bianca White, een blanke middenklasse vrouw. Stereotypen en gevoeligheden rondom huidskleur en identiteit worden binnenstebuiten gekeerd, met de zwarte humor die we van haar gewend zijn.

In Black Notice, Ntando Cele deals with contemporary response to prejudice in white Europe. In this absurdistic play, she stages her white alter ego Bianca White, a white middle-class lady while using black and white photographs of young black women from 1800s. She creates a specific black and a specific white experience, turning stereotypes and sensitivities inside out. Her black humor creates a laughter that gets stuck in the throat.

The Revivalists is een nieuwe internationale theaterproductie onder regie van Marjorie Boston en Maarten van Hinte. Jonge makers uit Nederland, Engeland en Zuid-Afrika actualiseren een aantal grote werken uit de Europese toneelliteratuur: De Bacchanten, Othello, Maria Stuart, De Kersentuin en Een vijand van het volk. Wat betekenen deze klassieke teksten voor jongeren? Wie zijn hun klassieke helden en iconen? De voorstelling toont een wereld under construction, waar je met fragmenten uit verleden en heden een nieuwe identiteit kunt opbouwen, los van wat anderen van je denken. Mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Fonds Podiumkunsten.

Allright! De heren van Kern Koppen, hiphoppers Badjekkah en de Zuid-Afrikaanse Zuluboy betreden gezamenlijk het podium voor een fusie van spoken word, rap, hiphop, soundscapes, jazz en afrobeat. Kern Koppen is inmiddels bij het grote publiek bekend: zij presenteerden in 2010 hun eerste album en zijn sindsdien regelmatig te gast bij DWDD en op 3FM. Deze drie formaties tegelijk: dat belooft een weergaloos dansbaar optreden.

DJ Lovesupreme sluit woensdagavond 8 oktober af.

Na het optreden in het Paard van Troje ‘Jam de la Crème’: een wisselend collectief van musici uit alle hoeken en gaten van de Nederlandse muziekscène.

Allright! The guys of Kern Koppen, Badjekkah and Zuluboy will share the stage for a fusion of spoken word, rap, hiphop, soundscapes, jazz and afrobeat. Kern Koppen is known to a large audience for their regularly shows at 3FM and DWDD. Bringing them all together guarantees an incredible music experience!

The concert at Paard van Troje will be followed by ‘Jam de la Crème’, an ever-changing collective of artists from various musical backgrounds.

Zonder enige voorbereiding of repetitie was er op Afrovibes 2013 een studio-jamsessie tussen Pablo van de Poel, Luka van de Poel en Robin Piso (bekend van DeWolff), de Zuid-Afrikaanse rapper Zuluboy, muzikale globetrotter Joep Pelt, Thijs van Millingen (Mdungu) op saxofoon en Robert van Spanje op basgitaar. De verschillende muzikale achtergronden van deze muzikanten resulteren in een mix van psychedelische rock, Zulu hiphop, deltablues en afrofunk. De formatie is eenmalig live te zien in Amsterdam. Maak je borst nat voor Zulutapes!

Without rehearsing a single note, Pablo and Luka van de Poel and Robin Piso (known from DeWolff) jammed with South African rapper Zuluboy, guitar globetrotter Joep Pelt, Thijs van Millingen (Mdungu) on saxophone and Robert van Spanje on bass guitar. The diverse musical backgrounds of these musicians results in a spontaneous and unique mix of psychedelic rock, Zulu hiphop, delta blues, afrofunk, and riotous noises! Ethnical rapper Zuluboy from South Africa and musical globetrotter Joep Pelt collaborate for the second year at Afrovibes Festival. They fuse their music styles, exploring a renewed version of Mbaqanga: Soweto Soul music. A fusion of Mbaqanga, hiphop, Kwaito and Afrosoul.

Nathan Daems is een van de meest veelbelovende Belgische jazzmuzikanten van dit moment. Met zijn band Black Flower brengt hij een opzwepende mix van jazz, soul en Ethiopische ritmes die doen denken aan Mulatu Astatke, peetvader van de ‘Ethiojazz’. De groep bestaat uit niet de minste muzikanten: de leden werkten samen met o.a. dEUS en Calexico. Black Flower was deze zomer Band in Residence bij het Gent Jazz Festival. Bekijk het nu, voor ze in de nabije toekomst North Sea Jazz veroveren!

Amplified Africa sluit het festival af met een safari door een muzikaal landschap van o.a. Afro house, kuduru, funana, Coupe de Cale en Azonto.

Eerder te zien op Pitch, nu op Afrovibes: Mr Sakitumi & The Grrrl. Mr Sakitumi is een Aziatisch Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikant en beat-maker uit Kaapstad. Samen met visueel kunstenares The Grrrl zet hij regelmatig de clubs in Zuid-Afrika in lichterlaaie. Hij mengt live bass, drums, keyboard, gitaren met samples en scratches tot een multi-instrumentaal extravaganza. Zij voegt daar surrealistische live beelden aan toe. Het duo werkte samen met alle hedendaagse helden uit de Zuid-Afrikaanse popmuziek, waaronder Goldfish, Freshly Ground en Gazelle. Een dansbare ‘fusion of beats and visual treats’!

Previously at Pitch, now at Afrovibes: Mr Sakitumi & The Grrrl create a fusion of beats and visual treats. Mr Sakitumi is an Asian/South African multi-instrumental musical phenomenon from Cape Town. They regularly perform with Goldfish, Freshly Ground and Gazelle. Mixing wildly apt visuals with live looping of drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, sampler or scratching, Mr Sakitumi & The Grrrl stage antics reflect quirkiness and a dash of seriousness and ensures an audio/visual feast.

De naam Joya Mooi klinkt al veelbelovend en dat is precies wat deze zangeres is. Ze is opgegroeid in een huis vol jazz, heeft jaren ervaring op de saxofoon en werd toegelaten tot het Artez Conservatorium om jazz te studeren. Inmiddels is ze twee albums verder en schitterde Joya vorig jaar naast Ramsey Nasr in Paradiso, onder begeleiding van het Metropole Orkest. Laat je betoveren door de hedendaagse jazzy klanken van Joya!

Joya grew up in a house filled with jazz. After years playing the saxophone, she questioned herself if she could compose music with her voice as well. At the age of 15 she got accepted to the Artez Conservatory to study jazz. She then discovered other genres of music and started writing her own songs. Last year she performed at Paradiso with the Metropole orchestra.

Correspondent en programmamaker Bram Vermeulen, schrijver Mike van Graan en theatermaker Phillip Dikotla gaan in gesprek over de voorstelling Skierlik en over het nieuwe Zuid-Afrika. VPRO-programmamaker Vermeulen schreef het boek ‘Help, ik ben blank geworden’, dat gebaseerd is op de moord op vier zwarte Zuid-Afrikanen in Skierlik. Debat in samenwerking met ZAM Magazine.

Correspondent Bram Vermeulen, writer Mike van Graan and actor Phillip Dikotla talk about the shooting incident in the township Skierlik which formed the inspiration for Dikotla’s performance as well as Vermeulen’s novel. Vermeulen’s and Dikotla’s works form the basis for a debate about the state of the new South Afrika.

Christine Otten geeft een inleiding op Biko’s Quest. Zij werkt momenteel aan een boek over Mabel, de vrouw van Robert Williams. Williams schreef in 1962 het boek ‘Negroes with Guns’, een inspiratiebron voor de Black Panthers. Steve Biko en Williams voerden bijna tegelijk een strijd tegen onderdrukking van zwarten. Otten beschrijft hoe Mabel als gewoon meisje verliefd werd en ontdekte hoe radicaal Williams was. Hoe ze door hem ‘schreeuwend en tierend veranderde van een echte negro tot iemand met zelfrespect’.

Writer Christine Otten presents an introduction to the performance Biko’s Quest. Otten writes a book about Mabel, wife of Robert Williams. In 1962, Williams wrote ‘Negroes with Guns’, which became a source of inspiration for the Black Panthers. Steve Biko and Williams both fought segregation and oppression of blacks.

A preview of ‘The resistance’ by Dancegroup Déjà vu: a 20-minute multi-disciplinary performance about Surinamese heroes. The story is based on Fortress Boekoe, the Redi Moesoes, setting fires on plantations in Suriname. These are crucial elements from the life of Surinamese warrior Boni mixed with recent stories of resistance and heroism.

Poetry Circle Nowhere is een groep jonge bevlogen schrijvende performers en performende schrijvers. Gebaseerd op de voorstelling The Revivalists gaan vier uiteenlopende performers uit vier steden (Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Groningen en Amsterdam) aan de slag met het thema identiteit, de ander en jij, onder leiding van regisseur Mike van Wetten. Een zinnenprikkelende combinatie van woorden, spel en sounds.

Poetry Circle Nowhere is a group of young writers, performers and poets. Four artists from different cities (Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Groningen, Amsterdam) create a performance based on The Revivalists and its themes: identify, the other and you. The result is a thrilling combination of words, performance and sounds.

Linar Ogenia, winnaar Theatermakerprijs Hollandse Nieuwe Festival 10 brengt een solo bewegingsvoorstelling waarin martial arts, dans en geschiedenis samensmelten. De voorstelling is een zoektocht naar Ogenia’s idolen en helden. Hij gebruikt hiervoor bewegingsvormen zoals capoeira, thaiboxing, taekwondo, gym en mimetechnieken van Etienne Decroux.

Linar Ogenia creates a solo performance in which martial arts like Capoeira, Thaiboxing, Taekwondo, dance, history and mime come together. His research is about the quest for the idol within himself, and finding different idols within one person.

Sarah Jonker (Likeminds) en Jemma Kahn (The Epicene Butcher bij Amsterdam Fringe) werken op het snijvlak tussen theater en beeldende kunst. Tijdens Afrovibes geven zij zichzelf de opdracht ‘in de box’ te denken. Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat daar niet iets uitkomt. Al kunnen ze niets beloven. De spontane ontmoeting en het plezier samen iets te maken, vormen de bron van inspiratie en een geweldig speelterrein. Nieuwsgierig? Kom, kijk en speel mee!

Sarah Jonker and Jemma Kahn both work within performing and visual arts and love to push their boundaries. They impose themselves on an unusual task: Sarah and Jemma are thinking in a box for several days. It’s unlikely that they will come out with nothing. Although we can’t promise anything. Come, watch and join if you are curious.

Artistiek leider van ISH, Marco Gerris (So You Think You Can Dance), de Zuid-Afrikaanse regisseur Mandla Mbothwe en dansgezelschap Jazzart uit Kaapstad werken tijdens het festival aan een korte performance van moderne dans, theater en hiphop. De dansvoorstelling Biko’s Quest dient hierbij als uitgangspunt. De dansers van ISH en Jazzart gaan op zoek naar hun eigen verhalen over helden en iconen.

Artistic director from ISH, Marco Gerris (So You Think You Can Dance) and South African director Mandla Mbothwe (Biko’s Quest) will work with dancers from ISH and Jazzart presenting a short urban dance performance that fuses contemporary dance, theatre and hiphop. They will use various elements of the performance Biko’s Quest, such as codes of heroism, rituals and being a hero or anti-hero.

Danser en choreograaf Themba Mbuli werkt in de week van Afrovibes Festival intensief samen met de jonge dansers en choreografen van DOX uit Utrecht. In de korte performance ‘O Mang?’ (een Sotho woord voor ‘Wie ben jij?’) gaan ze op zoek naar de raakvlakken tussen de choreograaf en dansers, tussen de dansers onderling en met zichzelf. Wie zijn wij in een veranderende samenleving?

‘O Mang?’ is a Sotho word for ‘Who are you?’. The collaboration between Themba Mbuli and young Dutch dancers and choreographers will explore the meeting between the choreographer and the performers, performers with each other and with themselves. The act seeks to interrogate who we are in this forever changing society.

‘Aan tafel met Bianca White’ is een intieme culinaire beleving met het alter ego van artieste Ntando Cele. Elk gerecht is een voorproefje van haar performance BLACK NOTICE en roept vragen op over zwart-wit stereotypes en de zwarte (vrouwelijke) identiteit in Europa. Smaaksensaties doen voelen, conversaties doen luisteren. Niets is wat het lijkt, aan tafel. Schuif aan bij Bianca White.

An intimate experience set around the dinner table with Bianca White, alter-ego of artist Ntando Cele. Every dish gives a taste of her performance Black Notice and raises questions around black and white stereotypes and black (feminine) identity in Europe. Nothing is what is seems around this dinner table.

De dansvoorstelling Time and Space: The Marrabenta Solos vormt het startpunt van een voorgesprek rondom Portugees sprekend Afrika en de verbinding tussen taal, muziek en dekolonisatie. In de voorstelling belicht Canda de raakvlakken tussen Europese en Afrikaanse muziek en het nieuwe postkoloniale imago van Mozambique. Quinsy Gario leidt een panelgesprek over identiteit en het postkoloniaal imago van Afrika.

Marrabenta Solos is a jumping off point to explore Lusophone Africa and connections between language, music and decolonization. In Marrabenta Solos the artistic collision of local and European music is used as an introduction to a decolonized image of Mozambique. But what is a decolonial state of mind? Quinsy Gario will lead a discussion on current developments and plot possible futures for countries based on a decolonial option.

Ama Koranteng-Kumi and Quinsy Gario have been invited as guest curators for Afrovibes festival. From their background and expertise they will curate a fringe programme and share their reflection and views with the audiences.

Het Festival Café is het hart van het festival en ontmoetingsplek voor dansers, acteurs, regisseurs, dichters, ontwerpers en publiek. Met Afrikaanse maaltijden, drankjes, exposities, pop-up stores, muziekoptredens dé plek voor een extra dosis Afrovibes-activiteiten. Afrovibes werkt o.a. samen met Africa’s Epic Sound, een platform voor kunstenaars uit Amsterdam (Zuidoost) op het gebied van muziek, ontwerp en kunst met Afrikaanse invloeden.

Heart of the festival is the Festival Café, a great place to hang out for a drink, food and enjoy the fringe programme. This is the place to be for post show talks, music performances and meet and greet with the artists. Africa’s Epic Sound gives input to the Festival Café by bringing artists from Amsterdam (Southeast) who celebrates the influence that Africa has on modern day art, music and fashion.

Kaapstad is dit jaar officieel design-hoofdstad van de wereld. Afrikaans design is hot! De Afrovibes Design Expo presenteert design, kunst, mode en cultuur die een beeld geven van het onbevreesde gevoel voor vernieuwing in Zuid-Afrika. Een gevoel dat voortkomt vanuit een nieuwe identiteit, een globaliserende wereld en de intensiteit van het dagelijkse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Cathal McKee stelde de design expo samen. Er is zowel werk van gevestigde als opkomende kunstenaars te zien in Het Festival Café in het MC Theater.

The Afrovibes Design Expo presents design, art, fashion and culture that reflects the fearless sense of renewal forming from the new identity, globalized economy, and the everyday experience of life in South Africa. With Cape Town being this years World Design Capital 2014, the exhibition brings performance art and design closer in a way that has never been done before.
