The arepa is one of Venezuelas most popular traditional foods. Arepas are flat cakes made from corn flour that are baked, grilled, or fried. Pictured here, white corn flour and water are first kneaded into dough, which is then divided and flattened into cakes. These are lightly browned in a frying pan and then baked in an oven until cooked through.
