Carvoeiro welcomed 2013 with parties, live music and entertainment around the town and after all the fun of the festive season it is down to business in Carvoeiro in 2013. January and February are not the busiest of months in the Algarve but the warm winter sunshine is more than enough of a reason to spend some time here over the next two months! As we head towards February people in the town will be getting ready for Carnival. Unfortunately last year there were no official celebrations in the town but we are hoping that a little Carnival cheer will make its way into Carvoeiro in 2013 and even if there is no official parade there will still be small parades from the local children of the pre- school, crèche and primary school in Carvoeiro. Carnival time in the Algarve is full of fun, colour, music and plenty of men dressed as women, men dressed as babies and in Carvoeiro there is usually a parade of motorcycles that includes a dog dressed up for the occasion! February will also see the reopening of the Carvoeiro Sol hotel in the centre of the town and traditionally this marks the start of the new tourist season in the town with many other businesses opening up again so this is a perfect time to visit and see what changes have been made to businesses around the town.

Unfortunately last year there were no official celebrations in the town but we are hoping that a little Carnival cheer will make

its way into Carvoeiro in 2013 and even if there is no official parade there will still be small parades from the local children of the pre-school, crèche and primary school in Carvoeiro.

Carnival time in the Algarve is full of fun, colour, music and plenty of men dressed as women, men dressed as babies and in Carvoeiro there is usually a parade of motorcycles that includes a dog dressed up for the occasion!

February will also see the reopening of the Carvoeiro Sol hotel in the centre of the town and traditionally this marks the start of the new tourist

season in the town with many other businesses opening up again so this is a perfect time to visit and see what changes have been made to businesses around the town.

Through January and February you can keep up with all the latest news and goings on in Carvoeiro by visiting our website at www.tomorrowcarvoeiro.com or by liking our Facebook page at www.facebook,com/TomorrowCarvoeiro where there will be details of any Carnival celebrations taking place in the town and news of other upcoming events in the town.

Just because it is the winter it doesn’t mean Carvoeiro is closed, it just means there is more space on the beach to lay your towel!

Residents and visitors bade a sad farewell in December to Carlos Jorge, better known as Tchombé who played the bongo drums in the Beto Kalulu band.

Carlos Jorge passed away suddenly on December 2 and a funeral was held for him in Portimão on January 2.

He will be sadly missed by many in Carvoeiro who enjoyed his music and his spirit.

Rest in Peace.

welcome!Happy 2013 to all Tomorrow Carvoeiro readers! We hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year whether you were lucky enough to be here in the Algarve or were elsewhere around the world.

This is traditionally a quiet time of the year in the Algarve and Carvoeiro is no exception with lots of places closed for a while to allow everyone to have a rest before the season starts once again but there is still plenty to do in Carvoeiro if you are planning a trip.

We have been lucky enough to have beautiful weather recently and let’s hope that this continues – just because it is winter doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a day or two at the beach!

Tomorrow Carvoeiro will be back in March with another monthly edition but in the mean time we hope you enjoy this January/February edition – and don’t forget to turn to page 7 to enter our fabulous competition to win a weekend break for two in Carvoeiro!

CARVOEIRO 2013 BUDGET

Lagoa Câmara have announced the details of the 2013 for the municipality and have outlined the amount of funds that will be available to Carvoeiro specifically.

The parish councils of Lagoa are to receive a total of €505,304 in funding with €87,513 being allocated to Carvoeiro, €111,099 for Estômbar, Ferragudo €55,745, Lagoa €125,764, Parchal €56,761 and Porches €69,422.

In Carvoeiro the money will be used to fund basic provisions in the town and will be split with €14,000 being spent on the upkeep of street furniture, €11,000 on cleaning and

waste collection, €14,000 on the painting of parking boundaries, €11,000 on the painting of walls and public areas, €10,000 on the cleaning and maintenance of the public bathrooms, €10,663 on the cleaning of coastal areas, €5,000 on urban cleaning on Sundays and bank holidays.

In 2013 in Carvoeiro the rest of the budget has been allocated to be spent on new items and renovations with €7,850 being spent on the renovation on the public bathrooms and a further €4,00 on the purchase of new street furniture.

CHARITY FOOTBALL

A charity football match saw players from Sporting take on a selection of players from the Algarve to help raise funds to rebuild sports facilities in the Lagoa and Silves areas following the tornado in November.

In total around three thousand people attended the match which took place at the Estádio de São Luís in Faro and 37,500 euros were raised for the charitable cause.

The money was to be split between Lagoa and Silves with the majority in Silves being used to rebuild the football stadium in the city that was badly damaged by the tornado.

The players for the Algarve team were at a disadvantage of not ever really playing together as a team before but it was the Algarve team

that scored first and put Sporting on the back foot.

After half time Sporting returned to the pitch with a new resolve and in the end the match finished 3-1 to Sporting who could have actually punished the Algarve team even further if they had wanted to.

It was fantastic that the event was organized by the Algarve Football Association and it was well supported with many people travelling to Faro for the match from Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Silves.

Once again the local business association, Vozes Intensas, organised a Christmas fair to take place in the square in Carvoeiro during December.

The event, which proved so popular it was extended to take place for a further three days, was a great hit with both residents and visitors of all nationalities who took the opportunity

to come down into the centre of the town to enjoy some festive fun.

Each day there was live entertainment from local performers including Beto Kalulu who managed to get the crowd dancing with a rendition of his famous hit named after Carvoeiro, while a fire lit in the centre of the square kept visitors warm as the sun set each evening.

The lack of Christmas decorations in Carvoeiro and in the Algarve in general meant that at times it was hard to tell that Christmas was coming at all but thanks to the fair there was plenty of Christmas spirit about!

Congratulations to all the stall holders who braved sometimes chilly weather and helped to create such a fantastic community event and let’s hope that 2013 will see many more fairs and events taking place in Carvoeiro!
