June 1st marks the official start of the bathing season and from now and for the next four months, you will be able to find lifeguards at many of the beaches in the local area. Lifeguards should be posted onto Carvoeiro beach, Benagil, Caneiros, Carvalho, Cova Redonda, Ferragudo, Marinha, Pintadinho, Senhora da Rocha, Vale Centeanes and Vale do Olival until September 30, so look out for the posts on the beach and pay attention to the colour of the flags flying to make sure you know it is safe to go into the water. Beach safety is something that is taken very seriously in the Algarve and you need to be aware of the dangers on the beaches, whether you are visiting for a couple of weeks or live here all year round. Only at the end of May there was an incident around the Algar Seco area of Carvoeiro which saw a man falling and requiring rescuing by the emergency services after he slipped while taking photographs in the area. The incident occurred on May 25 and emergency vehicles could be seen racing through the town at around 5pm to the area where the 47 year old man had fallen near to Algar Seco. According to reports in the Portuguese national press, the man fell around 10 metres and needed to be rescued by the emergency services in an operation that took around an hour and a half. The Carvoeiro area has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and they are here for everyone to enjoy responsibly, although this year none of the beaches in the Lagoa municipality will be flying a Blue Flag as the council did not apply for the awards this year. A statement from Lagoa Câmara explained that the council had not applied for a Blue Flag for beaches because the criteria for the flags had changed in 2012 and the cliffs on many of the local beaches means that they are no longer eligible for a Blue Flag. However, the mayor of Lagoa has assured everyone that the beaches in the Lagoa area remain some of the most beautiful in the area, have excellent water quality, are clean and well maintained and remain as popular as ever with visitors. n No more wild dogs

iN Ferragudo?

n CaleNdar girls

Ferragudo has long been known for the pack of wild dogs that lives in the village but these dogs could soon be removed by the authorities following a complaint by an elderly man who claims to have been attacked by one of the dogs.

The case occurred in April with the fisherman claimed that a dog knocked him off his bicycle and that if his friends hadn’t come to his aid he believes the dogs “would have killed me”.

Now the IPTM who owns the land by the waterfront where the dogs can often be found have called for the authorities to help them to remove the dogs.

Many local residents believe that these 30 to 40 dogs are harmless while others claim to have been chased by them in the past.

Whatever the opinion of people about the dogs it is now the plan of the IPTM to collect all the dogs who have been roaming Ferragudo since around 1999 and to then take them to the municipal kennels to see if anyone comes to claim them.

It is hoped that many of the dogs will be rehomed although experts are concerned that this could be difficult as many of the dogs are used to living wild and are not suitable as house pets.

The actions of the authorities in rounding up the dogs have been condemned by animal groups including PAN, the Party for Animals and Nature who have stated that the party is against the capturing of the dogs in Ferragudo.

The case of the dogs is currently being assessed but if they are taken to municipal kennels then they will be kept there for eight days to see if anyone claims them.

Local residents will be taking to the stage at Lagoa Auditorium this month for a performance of Calendar Girls by Tim Firth.

The play is based on the Miramax motion picture which gained international acclaim thanks to its warmth and humour and the same enthusiasm and passion will be on display here in the Algarve with the first ever performance of the play in Portugal.

A cast of well know local faces will be bearing all for the show and also in their very own calendar which will be on sale with proceeds going to the Algarave Oncology Association.

Tickets are now available for the play which will be taking place in Lagoa at the auditorium on June 27, 28 and 29 from 8pm.

Tickets cost €12 per person with €2 of the price being donated to the AOA.

For further information or to reserve tickets please call 966 211 634 or 282 767 750 or email [email protected]

The recent economic turmoil in Portugal may have seen some properties coming down in price across the Algarve region, however the Algarve and especially Carvoeiro, remains a very sought after area for residential tourism, second homes and for those looking to buy to let their property.

The Algarve was voted as the best golf destination in Europe by TG Travel Awards this year, has some of the best beaches in Europe and changes and incentives brought in by the Portuguese government mean that there has never been a better time to purchase your piece of paradise in Carvoeiro.

In this new feature from Tomorrow Carvoeiro we will be featuring selected properties in the local area to show anyone thinking of moving to Carvoeiro the possibilities that are on the market at the moment.

This property has an elegant spacious entrance hall, leading to various areas of the house, with the large sunny lounge straight in front of you, which has an attractive wood burning stove and a wall of windows offering panoramic sea views.

The dining room is also bright and has double doors to the fully fitted modern kitchen with black granite work surfaces. The kitchen also has its own entrance to the rear of the property and driveway. The large master en-suite bedroom is spacious with its own patio with splendid sea views. There are a further 2 guest bedrooms with a fabulous modern bathroom. The flooring is all rustic Portuguese tiles, adding an authentic charm.

Below the villa is a large garage and the basement has been developed into a 1 large 1 bedroom living area. The property sits in a good sized easily maintained plot with plenty of mature trees and shrubs.

The feature that sets this property above others is the beautiful rear terrace with tranquil pool and extensive sea views, only minutes to the attractive fishing village of Ferragudo and Carvoeiro.

Price: €850,000

n Time for The fairThe international Algarve Fair, One of the biggest annual events in the local area will be returning this month to the Fatacil showground in Lagoa.

The fair will be open on Saturday, June 1 and on Sunday, June 2 from 11am until 7pm on both days and promises to once again be a day filled with fun for all the family – even the four legged variety!

This year there will be the usual assortment of entertainment, stalls and the Algarve Dog Show but there will also be new additions to the fair including an auction which is due to take place on the Sunday, June 2.

The Auction is being run by Auction House Algarve and all the items that will be up for sale on the day will be available to view by visiting the Facebook page of the fair (www.facebook.com/InternationalAlgarveFair).

Look out for live performances at the fair from a number of local acts including a dance performance on Saturday from Stars Dance School and a show from Just Divas that evening from 5.30pm until 8.30pm featuring Ilze and Mandy on the main stage.

There will also be a chance to support some of your favourite local charities at the fair with the Bombeiros display always proving popular, possibly thanks to the zip line and fire hoses available for people to have a go with!

And of course, this is a chance for you to pick up some delicious pies, as well as many other types of wonderful food including freshly fried fish and chips at the food pavilion and dishes from many local restaurants.

The International Algarve Fair has grown over the years to be one of the highlights of the expat events calendar in the Algarve and is a great place to pick up a bargain, discover new businesses and meet up with old faces – just remember to take your sun cream with you as last year was especially hot!

Entry to the fair costs €3 for adults with children under 12 entering for free. For further information about the International Algarve Fair, please visit www.algarvefair.com or call 282 380 317

The residents of Ferragudo have been fighting to keep the town functioning and attractive for visitors and residents alike following the news that the branch of the Santander Totta bank is to close and that the Portuguese Postal service CTT intend to close the post office in the village.

The closure of the post office in Ferragudo has been met with outrage from not only the residents of Ferragudo but also members of the parish council and the Câmara in Lagoa and a petition was launched to help

save the post office from closure. It has now been confirmed that the post office in Ferragudo will be taken

over by the Parish council from June 11 and it is intended that it will become a one stop shop for tourist information, computers with internet connection, post office services and also a cash point.

There has however been good news for the business and resident of Ferragudo this past month with the announcement that the village will be part of the upcoming “Rota do Petisco” – Tapas Route which will be expanding across the river from Portimão into Ferragudo.

Last year around 35,000 people took part in the event which sees local restaurants serving up specially priced tapas dishes to clients at a cost of €2.50.

This year the event is due to take place in Portimão, Ferragudo and Alvor with dates provisionally set for between September 6 and October 13 and it is hoped it will encourage many more new visitors to sample the local restaurants in Ferragudo giving the area a much needed boost.

Performers from the Stars dance school are due to take to the stage once again in their yearly extravaganza which will this year be taking place on June 25 at Municipal Auditorium in Portimão between 5pm and 9pm.

Dancers from as young as three years old and of all levels will be showing off the new moves they have learnt throughout the year under the tuition of Sharon and Karina during lessons held at the Carvoeiro Clube de Tenis.

Good luck to all the children and adults for the show and look out for photos from the event in the next edition of Tomorrow Carvoeiro.

Learn more about the faces behind the businesses with Tomorrow Carvoeiro. This month we took five minutes to chat with Ciprian Silvasan, the owner of Taste restaurant, to find out what he loves about Carvoeiro and his inspirations behind the popular restaurant on Rua do Barranco.

Tomorrow Carvoeiro: Where are you originally from?Ciprian Silvasan: Satu Mare, RomeniaTC: What has been your experience in restaurants before opening Taste?CS: I worked in Colina Village and Pimenta Preta Restaurant as well as in Hotel Villa Gaivota in Ferragudo and couple of cafes there before coming to the restaurant.

TC: When did you open Taste and why?CS: We opened in May 2011. It was just the right time to do our own thing and realise our idea of a good restaurant. We had been thinking about it for a while already and when Taste became available we just took the chance (even though many people thought we were crazy!)

TC: What were your inspirations behind the concept of the restaurant and the menu?CS: Our experience and what we were missing: something a bit different. The Tapas is something typical for the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of the menu is Portuguese/international but with a different touch to it. We are one of the few places that changes the menu at least twice a year so we can always offer something new even to our regular guestsTC: What is the best part of your work?CS: When people leave the restaurant happy becasue they had a good night, enjoyed their food and feel relaxed. It’s also great to see how the restaurant has developed in the 2 years we have been in charge, building something up from the scratch is not easy and when it works well it’s an excellent motivation to keep on going.TC: Why did you choose Carvoeiro to open a restaurant?CS: We live in this area and it’s a nice little town with enough people around to stay open in winter.TC: Can you sum up Taste in three words?CS: Delicious, different, funTC: What is your favourite beach in the area?CS: Praia Grande, Caneiros and Pintadinho - all in the Ferragudo area; they have some nice beach bars and restaurants and nice corners to hide from the wind!TC: What is your favourite time of year in Carvoeiro?CS: All year around – each season has its own highlightsTC: And finally..If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?CS: I am just fine where I am now :)
