Tomorrow Carvoeiro May 2013

It has been a long winter in Portugal and the Algarve has not gone unscathed by the economic goings on both within the country and further afield but Carvoeiro is most definitely open for business and is gearing up for the next summer season. The sight of empty shops and closed down businesses have not hit Carvoeiro as hard as other areas mainly thanks to the continued efforts of businesses within Carvoeiro who remained open through the winter months and to initiatives by groups such as Vozes Intensas (see story on page 5). In the past month Carvoeiro has seen brand new businesses opening up, including two new fashion shops on Rua dos Pescadores, others coming under new management (the Trattoria in Quinta do Paraiso), while others such as the Atlantic Sud shop on the O Farol have expanded into new premises. Any businesses that had been closed during the winter have reopened in the past month, many with new menus, promotions or offers and there have been improvements made not only to bars and restaurants but also to the general infrastructure of the town, namely the painting of zebra crossings and re-lining of the parking spaces throughout the town to make parking better. In and around Carvoeiro there are also lots of things going on for residents and visitors proving that Carvoeiro is much more than just a beautiful place to lay your towel on the beach (see our May events guide on page 6). It may only be the start of the summer and there are still many months to go but the outlook in Carvoeiro is certainly sunny. The start of the bathing season marks the start of summer in the Algarve and beaches that have lifeguards in the area are Benagil, Caneiros, Carvalho, Cova Redonda, Ferragudo, Marinha, Pintadinho, Senhora da Rocha, Vale Centeanes and Vale do Olival Beaches on the above list are recommended for swimming as long as the green flag is flying. Carvoeiro and the local area has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, from the long sweeping flats of Ferragudo to the picturesque crags of Marinha and it is well worth trying to visit as many as you can during the long hot summer months. This year has been disappointing for the beaches of the area as 2012 has seen many of them losing their Blue Flag status. The Algarve has 69 beaches in the region with Blue Flag Awards, however the accolade has been removed from Caneiros, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro, Vale de Centeanes, Vale do Olival and Senhora da Rocha. A large problem for the beaches removed from the list has been the unstable cliffs that surround these areas. Falling rocks are a known danger on local beaches and there are clear signs to alert users to keep away from sun bathing in hazard zones - as long as you stay away from these areas then the beaches are very safe to use. Meanwhile, Praia da Marinha is still being considered as to if it will be safe for beach users this year as the cliffs here are particularly unstable and further studies are required before a decision can be made. With or without the Blue Flags, Carvoeiro and the other local beaches are still some of the most popular in the Algarve and continue to draw thousands of people each year to enjoy them. The main day of the celebration is on the Sunday which will start with a bang! Don't be worried if you hear the sound of cannon fire at 8am as this is part of the celebrations and is not an invasion taking place. There are then two religious ceremonies at the Church at 10.30am and then again at 6pm with there then being the traditional procession through the streets. Members of the local community carry a statue of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, the patron of Carvoeiro, from the church and down through the streets of Carvoeiro from 7pm in honour of the fishermen of Carvoeiro and the town itself. The bearers of the statue wear ceremonial dress and parade the deity through Carvoeiro for everyone to see. After the religious part of the day the focus then turns to entertainment and this year local musician Ricardo Sousa will be launching his new CD with a concert in the square from 9.30pm. To finish off the weekend of celebrations there will then be a firework display over the beach from midnight. If you are in Carvoeiro at the end of August then it really is worth taking the time to enjoy this traditional festival which sees many local people take to the streets in support while the firework display is usually pretty impressive and a great way to mark the end of August. A quick walk down to the beach in the town and it is not hard to see why so many people over the years have chosen to live in and visit Carvoeiro!

While the beach itself is stunning there is so much more to discover just around the cove and the best way to explore the area is on a boat trip.

The team of local men who have been sailing their boats in the area for as many as 30 years are able to offer trips to visit the spectacular caves and deserted beaches - a trip well worth taking your camera on thanks to the amazing views.

Don’t worry if you are unable to swim or are nervous about being on a boat – all boats have safety equipment and the captains know these waters better than everyone and are often able to give information about exactly what you are seeing on the trip.

You can book your trip ahead of time if you know when you

want to go but it all depends on the sea so it is a good idea to just turn up on the day for a trip with the boats leaving usually at 10am.

Both traditional and modern boats are used for the trips which last either 1 hour and cost 15€ per person or 1 hour and 20 minutes and cost 20€ per person and take you all the way to the magnificent cave in Benagil.

If you have a special request then the captains are happy to help so if you want them to take you on a different route or even to drop you at a deserted beach for the day and then pick you up – the choice is yours.

Book your trip today at the stand near the showers on Carvoeiro beach.

We all know Carvoeiro has some of the best local businesses around but here are a few who have stood out for Tomorrow Carvoeiro over the past year…

If you are looking for a great value, delicious meal then Carvoeiro is certainly the place to come to with fantastic restaurants all over the town.

Harold and the team at Ele & Ela on Rua do Barranco cook up a storm every night with specials including a mouthwatering rack of lamb and the packed restaurant each night is testament to the enduring success of this restaurant.

A little further along the road you have A Vela where an inventive menu is complemented by live traditional Fado music each week – a must for anyone looking for a real taste of Portugal.

Taste restaurant has come a long way since Nicole and Ciprian took the helm and it is now one of the most popular restaurants in

town with steak night, live music and a beautiful terrace for summer dining.

For a light snack or a much needed cool drink then Hemingway’s on Rua do Barranco should be your first stop and if you want to test the old grey cells then the Monday night quiz is always a highlight of the week.

Dress for success and the great choice of quality clothing from Collections means you don’t have to leave the town for the perfect outfit. Alison and her team have at the very start of the “in” road with styles to suit all body shapes and ages and look out for impressive sales throughout the year.

Finally, nobody wants to have to visit the doctor but if you have to then the kind, professional and prompt service from Dr Ken Vieira makes the entire process as pleasant as possible.
