There will probably not be snow on the ground and it's unlikely you will need to wear that Christmas jumper your aunt gave you last year but that doesn't mean that Christmas has any less sparkle if you are in Carvoeiro this year! You might be forgiven sometimes for thinking that there is nothing going on over the festive season in and around Carvoeiro but just because the town isn't decked with holly and twinkling lights it doesn't mean that there is nothing going on here and once again Carvoeiro will be staging its very own mini Christmas fair in the centre of the town this month. The third annual Carvoeiro Christmas fair will be taking place daily in the square between December 12 and 16 from midday until 6pm and there promises to be the usual mix of stalls selling handicrafts, sweets and festive gifts.

It may not be the German Christmas market but it will still bring some much-needed Christmas spirit to the town and it is once again being organised by the business association of Carvoeiro, Vozes Intensas.

Many of the local businesses will be reopening in the run up to Christmas, so don't worry about arriving in the town and finding everything shut up for winter - quite the opposite in fact with many local businesses putting on special

events, parties and offers for Christmas and New Year.

It is not expected that there will be any fireworks in Carvoeiro for New Year this year but there will be bars and restaurants open for the night including Hemingways and Mungos bar while if you don't want to miss fireworks to mark the start of 2013 then head up to the Monte Santo resort.

WELCOME!While we are all now getting ready for Christmas and New Year and stuffing ourselves with festive food there are many people who are still struggling to put their lives and homes back together after the freak tornado that hit on November 16.

Anyone who was in the area on the day will know just how scary the entire event was and I think most people are still in disbelief about the destruction. Read all about the day the tornado hit Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Silves on pages 4 and 5 of this months edition where there is also information about a sponsored bike ride and walk to raise funds for victims.

November was a strange month weather wise with boiling hot days followed by torrential rain so we will be hoping that the weather settles down for Christmas and New Year - it's hard to see the fireworks through the cloud and rain!

Read through our events guide for December to find out about some for the best festive events taking place in and around Carvoeiro this year and to get some inspiration about where to head to on New Years Eve, there is something for everyone from gourmet menus to fireworks and live DJs.

As always you can keep up to date with all the goings on in Carvoeiro by following us on Twitter @CarvoeiroNews, liking us on Facebook or visiting our website at www.tomorrowcarvoeiro.com

And finally..we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

JUNTA UNDER THREAT

Budget cuts and austerity measures in Portugal have led to the proposed restructuring of local authorities with many local parish councils being forced to merge with others or to close altogether in a bid to cut down on the costs of local government.

Carvoeiro parish council has been identified as one of the Juntas that are to be closed as part of the changes but president Jorge Pardal is keen to see it remain open for the good of the residents and visitors to Carvoeiro.

To support the cause you can send an email in any language to [email protected] with your full name and address and stating that you are against the closure and your reasons why. These letters will then be forwarded to the government in a bid to prevent the closure.

The Junta has many responsibilities and generally keeps Carvoeiro running smoothly so if you are against the closure of the Junta then you are urged to contact the parish council directly to show your support.

DEBORLA REOPENS

A new branch of DeBorla has opened at the Albufeira Retail Park in Guia (next to Algarve shopping).

The new store replaces the one that was destroyed in the fire in September at the Portimão retail park and the staff from Portimão have now been given jobs at the new shop.

DeBorla sells a variety of items including household goods such as crockery and glass wear, low-cost shampoos and bathroom goods and items for children among other products.

PAID PARKING

The paid parking areas in Carvoeiro have come to a temporary end for the winter months and now residents and visitors to Carvoeiro can once again park along Rua do Barranco without having to pay.

There is now nowhere in Carvoeiro where you have to pay to park your car and it will remain this way into 2013 until perhaps around March when the black plastic will be removed from the signs and people will once again need to pay.

The paid parking came to an end at the start of November as promised by president of the Junta, Jorge Pardal, earlier in the year when it was initially brought in.

CHILDRENS CINEMA

Local children and visitors will be able to enjoy two different films being shown at the auditorium in Lagoa this month.

On December 16 there will be two screenings of Arthur Christmas at 3pm and 5.30pm with tickets to the screening costing €3.

4 | Tomorrow December 2012

On Friday, November 16 Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Silves were rocked by a tornado that hit at around 1pm with

various locations being left devastated by the freak weather.

The warm weather combined with the high winds, thunder and lightning led to a tornado forming over the sea which could be seen from the cliff tops in Carvoeiro as it approached land.

When the tornado did hit land the worst hit areas in Carvoeiro were in and around Quinta do Paraiso and Monte Santo, while the municipal swimming pool in Silves and the outskirts of Lagoa near to the EN125 were also hit very badly.

Before the tornado hit there had been very heavy rain, strong winds and lots of lightning.

The church on the cliff top in Carvoeiro was hit by lightning in the

storm leading to a fire in the electrical box which was quickly extinguished by a member of the emergency services

who was near the site at the time.

Within minutes of the tornado hitting the emergency services were out in force in Carvoeiro, Lagoa and Silves.

In Silves paramedics were sent to help people who had been in mobile homes near to the swimming pool when the tornado came and flipped some of the vehicles while police came to divert traffic away from

fallen trees and debris that littered the streets.

In Lagoa the EN125 was temporarily blocked as teams worked to quickly clear trees that had been uprooted in the storm next to the road and huge road signs had been brought down.

Away from the road in Lagoa the worst of the damage hit around 100 apartments near to the road in the "new" part of Lagoa.

From the road alone you could see windows had been blown in, tiles ripped off roofs and cars flipped.

One resident in Lagoa who was affected by the storm told Tomorrow Carvoeiro: "I had just got into the house when the tornado hit. We watched as the windows in our apartment buckled

and bent with the pressure and the noise was unbelievable.

"I looked out of the window and saw a van had blown up onto a first storey balcony when it then fell and smashed onto cars below.

"We were shouting to each other as the tornado hit but the noise was deafening and our daughter was on the floor in her room holding onto the bed leg to not be sucked out of the room."

Within around half an hour all the destroyed vehicles from the scene had been removed and within another hour there were already workers, members of the emergency services and volunteers working to start to remove broken tiles and to clear the worst of the debris.

In Carvoeiro a resident from Quinta do Paraiso told Tomorrow Carvoeiro: "We heard a loud noise coming from outside so I opened the door to see what was going on.

“My husband then shouted for me to close the door because it was a tornado and we could see debris

being blown around and smashing into our house.

“It took all our force to be able to shut the door and we stood, petrified for around 10 seconds as the tornado passed our house.”

Some of the houses on the outskirts of the Monte Santo resort sustained heavy damage as did properties in Quinta do Paraiso near to the O Branco restaurant while a private property opposite Monte Santo was left very badly damaged - solar panels from this property were found some 2 kilometres away.

After the initial shock of the storm it was then all hands on deck to clear up and the level of community spirit was amazing

to witness with people volunteering to clear trees, offering tools and around 1,000 people came down to Silves on November 18 to clear the affected areas completing work that would usually take over two months to do in just a single morning.

Carvoeiro resident and cyclist Tómas Metcalfe has also helped to arrange a charity sponsored bike ride/walk to take place on December 2 starting from the municipal swimming pool in Silves at 10am.

The walk will be over 5km and the bike ride over 25km with each participant asked to

donate €5 to take part and the money raised going to the local charity Castelo dos Sonhos who will then use the funds to help local families affected.

The total cost of all the damage is thought to be in the region of 5 million euros while 12 people were left homeless and 13 people were injured, including two seriously.

Nothing says Christmas in Portugal more than seeing the bright and beautiful colours of the Bolo Rei on the table.

This is actually less of a cake and more of a sweet bread and is served over the Christmas period and particularly on King's Day, January 6.

You can buy these cakes from all supermarkets and bakeries but if you are not in Portugal or want to give it a go yourself then it really is very easy to put together once you have all the ingredients - so why not give it a try this Christmas!

BOLO REI - KING CAKE

METHOD

1. Firstly make the yeast by placing the active yeast, sugar, flour and water to make a dough. This should be smooth and needs to rest until it doubles in size.2. Place the dried fruit, lemon and orange zest and crystallised fruit into a bowl and cover in the port. Leave this to soak.3. Beat together the sugar and butter and add the eggs and yolks until smooth. Then add half the flour and the milk to the mixture.4. Add the yeast to the dough.5. Add the nuts and the fruit and port mixture to the dough and as much of the remaining flour as you need to make a bread like dough then leave in a warm place to double in size.6. Work the dough then shape it into a round before then creating a hole in the middle for the crown shape then place it on a greased baking tray.7. Decorate the cake with some more crystallised fruit and then brush an egg wash over the top and leave again to rise for about an hour.8. Bake in the oven at 180ºC for around 40 minutes or until golden in colour and serve dusted in icing sugar.

When the nights get cold and the town starts to say goodbye to the masses of visitors that have visited over the summer months then it is time for the local residents to dust off their darts

and head to the local bars on Friday nights to play in the local Carvoeiro darts league.

The league in Carvoeiro has now been running for many years and has grown from a single league with six

teams to now having three leagues and taking part in more than ten different bars.

Local residents and visitors of all nationalities take part in the league

with the darts speaking for themselves and overcoming any language barriers!

While the darts is a great way for local residents to get together and meet up for some friendly competition it has also proved to be an essential event for local bars each week - ensuring customers in each of the

participating bars every Friday night and breathing life into Carvoeiro during the winter months.

Some of the teams are very good while others see more darts on the floor than in the board but that is what makes the darts in Carvoeiro so inclusive and welcoming of everyone.

If you enjoy darts and want to see if someone needs an extra player on a Friday night then head down to one of the local participating bars on a Friday night from 9pm and if you would rather watch from the sidelines then head down to Carvoeiro to soak up the atmosphere

and enjoy a drink or too while you are there!

For further information about the darts or to see the schedule of games call into Hemingways or one of the other bars in the league.

It may have still been November but for some the festive fun had already begun in and around Carvoeiro.

The Smokehouse hosted a pre-Christmas fair while there was another large Christmas fair held at Arte Algarve at the end of the month on November 24.

Both fairs successfully got everyone into the Christmas spirit with plenty of gift ideas, great food and lots of visitors while it was also a great opportunity to see what some of the local businesses and artisans have been preparing for Christmas.

If you missed these fairs and would like to attend others in the coming month then have a look at our events guide on pages 6 and 7 for more information.

PYJAMA PARTY

Children from the local pre-school in Carvoeiro took party in the National Pyjama Party Day on November 20.

All the children, aged between three and six years old, came to school in their pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns and wore special night caps they had made for the event before eating popcorn and playing special games.

Pyjama day is used to raise funds and awareness about the possibility of fostering in Portugal and to educate the children about others who are not lucky enough to have their own family.

The children collected money from friends and families in little money-box houses to donate to the charity and raised a total of more than €70 - Well done children!

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY

The Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group will be celebrating their 21st anniversary on December 7 with a meal at Restaurante Portarade in Ferragudo square.

This is a chance for members both old and new to celebrate the success of the group over the years while it is also an opportunity to pay membership fees for 2013.

It will cost €12 per person to
