Make sure to get down to Lagoa early to ensure you have a parking space, or book a taxi to drop you off at the front gate where the tickets are available to buy on the evening costing €5 per person. A family ticket for four people can be bought for €15 and children under 12 enter for free.

Fatacil, one of the biggest events in the Algarve summer calendar, will be returning to the Fatacil showground in Lagoa between August 16 and 25 this year.

Once again the heady mixture of livestock, handicrafts, traditional foods, horse shows and live entertainment is sure to draw thousands of visitors from across the Algarve and beyond to this family friendly event just down the road from Carvoeiro.

Around 600 different exhibitors will be attending the fair, offering visitors the chance to buy everything from a very smelly cheese sandwich to a farm ready tractor and everything else in between!

This is a chance to see first-hand how Portuguese artisans from across the country make handicrafts and to then purchase their wares for reduced prices. Alternatively there are also many different wines, sweets, liquors, smoked sausages and other delicious Portuguese foods available to try and buy for those who want a true taste of Portugal.

Every evening there is also a live musical performance from well-known Portuguese acts who this year include The Gift on August 17, José Cid on August 19 and Pedro Abrunhosa on August 25.

With the increase in visitors in the Algarve in the summer, so comes a massive rise in the demand for blood at local hospitals.

This summer it is easier than ever to give blood across the Algarve with the mobile blood bus parking up at various locations allowing people to simply hop on and donate!

High seas in July led to the access ramp at Praia de vale Centeanes being destroyed completely.

The south easterly waves led to a drop in the level of the beach by 1.5 metres according to Lagoa Câmara.

Workers from the Câmara have since repaired the access ramp to the beach ready for August.

n acclaim foR ZoomaRine

Zoomarine, the sea life park located near to Guia, has been acknowledged as being one of the best theme parks in Europe by users of the travel website Tripadvisor.

The park was the only entry from Portugal and sat in the top ten alongside Disneyland in France, Port Aventura in Spain and Europa-Park in Germany.

n cliff RichaRd in caRvoeiRo

Fans of the award winning singer will have the chance to meet in person with him and have a bottle of wine signed by the singer at a special autograph session to take place at the Intermarché supermarket between Carvoeiro and Lagoa.

The session will take place on August 2 between 11am and 1pm with Sir Cliff Richard signing boxes of his Vida Nova wine.

Make sure to get in line early for the autograph session as legions of Sir Cliff fans are expected to turn up for a glimpse of their hero!

August is traditionally the busiest time of the year in Carvoeiro with thousands of people coming to the village to enjoy the beautiful beaches, exciting entertainment and evenings filled with fun for all ages.

n Calendar girls dare to bare!

Ruth, Turea Spencer as Celia, Melanie Winstanley as Chris, Joana Williams as Cora, Jan Sheppeard as Jessie and Sandy Whittle as Annie, all braved posing with no clothes for the show it was their amazing, emotional and believable acting that really had tongues wagging by the interval.

Congratulations to all involved and to Chris Winstanley for his inspired directing and to Sam Black who acted as assistant director.

The total raised so far by the production and through sales of calendars and other promotional materials now stands at more than €8,500.

Calendars featuring the ladies from the production are still available to buy from Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis with funds raised being added to the final total to be donated to the AOA.

The Algarveans Experiemental theatre Group pulled out all the stops during their latest production with a fantastic performance of Calendar Girls at the end of July.

The cast, crew and all involved managed not only to sell out the Lagoa auditorium and raise thousands of euros for the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA), they also put on perhaps the best productions of recent years by the group.

The Algarve is not just somewhere to come and lay your towel in August and this month sees some of the biggest names in pop, rap, dance and rock from around the world come to the area.

This year the Sudoeste festival at Zambujeiro do Mar will see some amazing headline acts with dance act Avicii starting things off on August 7 followed by Pitbull on August 8, Fatboy Slim on August 9, Calvin Harris and Cee Lo Green on August 10 and finishing with Snoop Lion (formerly known as Snoop Dog) on August 11.

Tickets to Sudoeste can be bought from the FNAC store at Algarve shopping and cost €95 for the whole event or €48 per day.

Meanwhile British rockers Keane will be coming to the Algarve motor park on August 11 for the AIA Summer Party.

Tickets for the concert cost €25 per person with children under the age of 12 entering for free.

n Places to visitLast month we had a look at some of the best local beaches in the area but if you are looking for something a little different to do in the local area then why not use our places to visit quick guide for some inspiration during August!

n cliff walking

You don’t need to go far for some spectacular cliff walking. Head up to the road that links Algar Seco to the church and midway along the road you will see a sign for “Escadinhas”. Follow the dirt path in the direction of the sea down to some hidden steps and then explore this amazing area – Strong shoes required!

Splash around in the cool clear waters at the fonts and then enjoy a picnic or barbeque among the trees while children play in the park area or go for a walk around the lake. Easy to find, just turn right after the railway line into Estombar and follow the road for around 1km until you see the sign and park up for an picture perfect day of fun!

n Medieval fair

Step back in time and enjoy a night out on the cobbles of Silves during the annual Medieval Fair taking place this year between August 2 and 11.

Entertainment comes in the form of jousting competitions, dance shows, musical performances and hundreds of interesting and unique stalls thorough the streets of this historical city. Tickets cost €4 for adults, children under 130cm enter for free.

n sardine festival

Portimão riverfront transforms into a huge open air restaurant with thousands of sardines cooking away on barbeques during the festival which runs from August 1 until August 11.

After beating your way through the sardine smoke and stuffing yourself with these delicious fish then browse the stalls and listen to live entertainment on a massive stage by the old bridge.

The last Sunday of August always see the town of Carvoeiro come alive with the annual festival of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação and this year the festival lands on August 25.

Look out for a parade through the town at around 7pm with members of the local community dressed in robes carrying a statue of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação through the streets and then up to the church. This is then usually followed by live music, entertainment and a firework display from midnight. Be sure to be in Carvoeiro for a night of celebrations!

Learn more about some of the most familiar faces around Carvoeiro with Tomorrow Carvoeiro! This month we took five minutes to chat with Dr Kenneth Vieira, the owner of Centro Médico, the doctors surgery located on Rua do Povo Burro, right of the taxi rank, behind the kiosk.

Tomorrow Carvoeiro: Where are you originally from? Dr Ken Vieira: I was born in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, South-America. TC: Where was your medical training and did you specialise in anything specific? Dr KV: I had my medical training at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 1977 I graduated and in 1979 I was certified in Family Medicine. TC: Where did you work as a doctor before opening your practice in Carvoeiro? Dr KV: In 1979 I had a clinic in San Nicolas in Aruba, an island in the Caribbean.

I also owned a maternity clinic there, where I helped 400 babies to come into the world. In 1992 I moved back to the Netherlands and started a Family Practice in Alphen aan den Rijn. TC: When did you open your practice in Carvoeiro? Dr KV: In 2003 I constructed the surgery in Carvoeiro and started to practice in February 2004. TC: Why did you choose Carvoeiro to open your practice? Dr KV: Of all the places in the Algarve, Carvoeiro and its people make me feel at ease. TC: What makes you so good at dealing with patients in Carvoeiro?Dr KV: In and around Carvoeiro

there are many residents who like my Northern European approach in their own language while the Southern European relaxed style of working is appreciated by my clients. TC: What is the best part of your work? Dr KV: Listening to the patient, giving my opinion and then working out a plan together. I love to help people, if they are happy, I am happy too. TC: Can you sum up your style as a doctor and the practice in three words? Dr KV: Kind, Experienced, Relaxed (but serious). TC: What is your favourite beach in the area? Dr KV: My favourite beach is Praia Grande in Ferragudo. TC: What is your favourite time of year in Carvoeiro? Dr KV: When the almond blossom colours the fields, I am very happy. TC: And finally...if you could live anywhere else in the world where would it be and why? Dr KV: I feel I belong here: in the country of my ancestors.
