The walk from loneliness to solitude All people need the to feel alone from time to time, some more then others. What does it mean to be alone? The project focuses on the different aspects of being alone, negative and positive. There is no specific path in the park, just structures, placed around in Bjaanes. To create a path to a place where you are supposed to be alone would be contradictive, some structures are focused on being alone but still very much in focus and sight while other let you hide and get away. The synonyms to alone that will be explored are: Solitude, lonesome, desolate, oneness, unattended and excluded. The structures all create a sharp contrast to the nature by using strict geometric shapes. Viktor Svantesson at Bergen Arkitekthøgskole about made by

The walkfrom loneliness

to solitude

All people need the to feel alone from time to time, some

more then others. What does it mean to be alone? The

project focuses on the different aspects of being alone,

negative and positive. There is no specific path in the

park, just structures, placed around in Bjaanes. To create

a path to a place where you are supposed to be alone would

be contradictive, some structures are focused on being

alone but still very much in focus and sight while other

let you hide and get away. The synonyms to alone that will

be explored are: Solitude, lonesome, desolate, oneness,

unattended and excluded. The structures all create a sharp

contrast to the nature by using strict geometric shapes.

Finding the interesting spotsThe requirements for the spots where that they were steap and flat, dence and open

The classic “zoom in” from blurred to high-ress.

Printed on tracing paper, scanned, etc. Tried different papers, different colors.

This method gave me six starting points.

1 Solitude towerA place where to go when one seeks a few hours of solitude. Placed in the water with a secret entrance this is a place where you are supposed to enjoy the feeling of being alone.

Page 13: The walk from lineliness to solitude

You cant see in from below, you cant find the entrance without knowing of it. Blending into the surrounding by almost This is a reward for the people seeking it.

2 Lonesome bridgeThe bridge is 25mx0.7m. This way you can only enter one person at a time. The color of the bridge is white which make you extremely visible on the bridge.

On the bridge you are supposed to feel connected with the surrounding landscape. The bridge is just a bridge to the surrounding space in the landscape.

The feeling of being in total focus and unable to hide will be strong though.

Page 15: The walk from lineliness to solitude

If you can relax and let your self be one with the landscape this might be a positive place, if you have a problem with being in the most visible place in the area this place will make you feel quite uncomfortable.

3 Desolate circleThe desolate circle is a pool. When you meet it in person you won’t see much of the shape since all you will see is a 100m large round circle of water. The water level is in fluctuation with the ground.

Page 17: The walk from lineliness to solitude

Deserted of people and in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness.

4 A field with concrete towers in the middle of the forest. You go from dense forest to dense conrete towers. All the towers are the same with, depth and color but they differ in height.

4 Oneness park3m x 3m x 0.5-8m large concrete towers. All square and in strict lines.

“The fact or state of being unified or whole, though composed of two or more parts.”

" Identity or harmony with someone or something.”

Page 19: The walk from lineliness to solitude

Working not unlike the forest with the repetitive impression of just seeing the same everywhere, in a very different way though.

How people experience this is of course very different from person to person, but the unification one might feel with the forest probably will be experienced very differently inside the park.

5 Unattended towerFrom the entrance you can’t see the top. From the top you can’t see the entrance.

Inside the tower you can see the outside. Outside the tower you can just see your own reflection.

Being watched, while still not being seen still feels like being watched. The barrier between the two might create a unique state of feeling alone.

6 Sole towers2m x 2m x 8m large concrete towers. All hollow with some kind of interior.

One might be a ladder to a small look out point while some other might just be benches in the bottom with a open roof.

The same type of tower as at “unattended tower” is also located inside the 4x4 grid.

Having just one

structure at every

sight will work against

itself if there are a

lot of people at the

area. There for this

place work more like

the city or a apartment

block.

No where are you as

alone as when you are

in one out of many

small rooms.

7 Excluded pyramidThe only natural lighting you get inside the pyramid is from a 1x1m opening in the top.

Specific times a day there will be a strong beam of light inside the pyramid.

Page 25: The walk from lineliness to solitude

The feeling of standing inside it will not be that of “excluded” in it self but the spiritual mind that we all carry inside us will wander to the excluded feeling after sitting in the light for a while. There are also other feelings connected with sitting inside a beam of light in case other people are in the same room. Ranging from “selected” to maybe even unique.

Quite a few people will probably dislike it strongly
