"And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. Jesus said to his disciples: "In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. "And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds' with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. When a priest celebrates Mass, he offers each celebration of the Eucharist for a particular person, or intention. By doing so he applies special graces from God upon that person or intention. Similar to how we are able to intercede for others by our personal prayers, the Church is able to intercede for us through the celebration of the Mass. However, since the Eucharist is the “source and summit of the Christian life” the Mass possess a power that our personal prayers do not. The practice of offering Mass for particular intentions is an ancient one, dating back to the early Church. Pope Paul VI said, “The Mass is the most perfect form of prayer!” It has immense power. Countless miracles and conversions have occurred throughout the centuries by offering Masses for a specific intention or person.

Please pray for our sick, home bound, suffering parishioners, and for those who need prayer. To add a loved one’s name to our prayer list, please email staff(at)stmaryscathedral.org. In an effort to keep the list current, the names will be rotated off from time to time. PLEASE HELP YOUR CATHEDRAL Our only source of income is from the collection basket. We are not subsidized by any other means than the generosity of our parishioners. Any donation to assist us with our expenses is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Why should I give? St. Mary’s Cathedral is here for all parishioners, even those considered inactive or those who have not made a financial contribution. The Cathedral needs each and every person to contribute according to their means to make sure our services are available to all who need them.

“Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us?” Saint Vincent de Paul

St. Mary’s Vincentians meet the poor and the needy and assist them in addressing their financial and related burdens. Your commitment to our mission ensures that where we go, you are also there. Our St. Vincent de Paul helpline is (719) 473-4633 ext.110.

THEME: “For the Glory of God” 1 Corinthians 10:31 We glorify God through our words and actions and by worshipping Him as our loving Father, who send His only Son to redeem us from sin and death. Nothing can compare to Him. As members of Christ’s body, we are sent on a mission to serve others as Christ did, bringing his love, mercy and compassion to others. Remember that no gift is too small. Please remember that you can fulfill your pledge over several months and pay by credit card, automatic debit, cash, money orders or checks. The diocese also accepts gifts online. Our parish goal is $73,612.

St. Mary’s Columbarium In 1965 the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church was amended to allow for cremation as an alternative to casket burial for the final resting place of our beloved relatives. In 2005, a Columbarium was completed in St. Mary’s plaza courtyard to the east of the Sanctuary. The mission of St. Mary’s Cathedral Columbarium Ministry is to provide to the Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Colorado Springs and their family members a final resting place consecrated and conserved in a spirit of dignity and reverence for loved ones at rest. As Catholics, we begin our lives in the back of the church at the Baptismal font. We spend our lives within our church facing forward to the Altar. How fitting to complete our existence here by remaining on the church grounds where it all began. There is great consolation in having a loved one at rest near their church. Family and friends often stop by for a prayer or meditation on their way to or from Mass. The cost of a niche is $2,400. Many have purchased niches for future use in order to lock in their spot. Please see our website: www.stymaryscathedral.org and click the Columbarium tab for more information or you may contact us at 719-473-4633 ext. 104.

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 14, 2021 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. — Mark 13:31

DELHI TOWNSHIP, OHIO – Dec. 22, 2020 – Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Roberta Westrick died Dec. 11, 2020, at the age of 82 in Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility for the Sisters of Charity. Sister Roberta was born on Sept. 18, 1938 to Robert and Bernardine (Jarvis) Westrick in Detroit, Michigan. She was the oldest of six, five girls and one boy. She was a Sister of Charity for 62 years. Sister Roberta’s ministries span nearly 50 years, 13 in the teaching classroom and 36 in pastoral services. She began teaching at St. Savior, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1962 followed by St. Dominic, Cincinnati (1964-’66). Next she traveled to Loyola School in Denver, Colorado. Little did she know at the time that she would serve in the West almost all of her remaining ministry years; it was the vistas and the spirit of the people that gave her life. Sister Roberta taught at Pauline Memorial, Colorado Springs (1968-’72) before becoming the Colorado Springs diocesan youth minister (1972-’76). She served in a pastoral services ministry at Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs for two years before gaining formal course work in pastoral counseling at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada. From 1981 until 1986 Sister Roberta ministered at St. Michael and St. Patrick parishes in the Diocese of Jefferson City, Missouri. She then returned West, serving as pastoral minister at St. Patrick, Colorado Springs from 1986-’93. In 1994 Sister Roberta served in the homeless shelter in Colorado Springs and attended specialized classes at Colorado College before serving as the campus minister at St. Mary’s High School, Colorado Springs. The skills learned in her art classes gave her further confidence in undertaking the art form of painting santos or saints/holy images. After serving as pastoral associate at Holy Trinity, Colorado Springs (1999-’08), Sister Roberta retired from active ministry. In 2001 she was commissioned by the art committee at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Colorado Springs to participate in a major art project – an outdoor plaza display of the patron saints of the 46 parishes in the Diocese of Colorado Springs. The Plaza de los Santos took more than a year and a half to complete and was dedicated and blessed in 2003. In her retirement years she coordinated cabin use for the Sisters in Cascade, Colorado, and was commissioned to paint 16 santos for the reredos behind the newly formed parish of St. Pius X in Weslaco, Texas. Due to declining health in 2019 she moved to her native Michigan, enjoying time with extended family members. Very recently she came ‘home’ to her Sisters, residing in Mother Margaret Hall. Sr. Roberta Westrick (was buried shortly after her death) because it was a bad time here for COVID. Her funeral liturgy will be on Nov. 16 at 10 a. m. Eastern Standard Time. The funeral will be live-streamed through our web site: www.srcharitycinti.org

With Gratitude and Abundant Thanks from the Vincentians

of St. Mary’s Cathedral! A Summary of Our Annual Report

Dear Parishioners, Friends and Benefactors of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul: Your kindnesses in charity to the needy continue to assist hundreds within our community through the works of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. For the period 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2021 contributions to our Conference from all sources totaled $39,703. With carry-over funds from the previous fiscal year, the Conference had $49,029 in available funds to help our friends and neighbors in need this fiscal year. Included in this amount was $27, 540 from parish collections and an additional $11,963 from parish benefactors, other donors and mini-grants from Catholic Charities and the National Office of St. Vincent de Paul. From these resources, the following financial help was provided to the community we serve: Housing Assistance/Eviction Prevention: Over $41, 000 Utilities, Food, and other forms of assistance: Over $3800 “In Kind” help for Food, Furniture, Legal, other: Over $4200 Operating Expenses: $250 The past reporting year continued to have visitation challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. We were finally able to resume limited Home Visits, our core mission, in June. Thus, most of the works performed were via phone visits. We did continue to provide and deliver food from our growing food pantry and which has become a rich addition to the scope of our works. In summary, we supported 162 households comprised of almost 400 friends and neighbors. This is a 33% increase in assistance from the previous year. St. Mary’s Vincentians expended almost 3000 hours in the perfor-mance of these works and locally traveled about 1000 miles serving six Colorado Springs zip codes covering almost 70 square miles, now including Security-Widefield. We could not have performed these works without the participation and support of St. Mary’s parishioners. The Conference is most grateful for your contributions to the quarterly Second Collections and other personal contributions throughout the year. The need is growing as families struggle through a challenging econ-omy, especially with respect to affordable housing. The works of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul depend on faith and trust that wherev-er we go, you are also there. And, we welcome all who hear the “Cry of the Poor” to join us as a potential member Vincentian or a volunteer who can take on some of the administrative efforts. Please contact Steve Sisa at [email protected] or at 719-590-6675 for more information on the opportunity to serve the poor in whatever capacity the Holy Spirit beckons.

Amen
