From our Mission Director

Rejoice! We are halfway through Advent and we celebrate the great joy of Christ being near. This Gaudete Sunday is marked by the rose color of our third candle reminding us about the joy that fills the second half of the season. On this third Sunday we also pray through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of Americas whose feast day is celebrated on Dec. 12, that we may respond to the call of God in our lives the way she did, namely with great humility and joy. I hope that the visit of Blest Art will help all of us to enter more into the depth of the season. All wood work that we can purchase today comes from Bethlehem, a very special and privileged place in the history of salvation. In this city of Jesus’ birth now there is less than 25% of Christians. It is a significant drop from the 80% only a decade ago. Political and economical situation forces many Christian families to leave Palestine in order to look for a better life somewhere else. Those who stay support their communities and families by making beautiful hand made woodcraft items sold all over the world. If you are looking for a meaningful Christmas gift and wish to support our fellow Christians in Bethlehem. Please make sure to stop in the narthex and buy an item or two. December 17 marks the beginning of the “O” Antiphons, the seven jewels of our liturgy, dating back to the fourth century, one for each day until Christmas Eve. These antiphons address Christ with seven magnificent Messianic titles, based on the Old Testament prophecies and types of Christ, such as Wisdom, Lord and Ruler, Root of Jesse, Key of David, Dawn of the East, King of the Gentiles, and God, with us! As we prepare ourselves for Christmas, don’t forget about making space for Christ in your hearts and minds by experiencing God’s mercy in the sacrament of reconciliation. Our Christmas confession will take place on Wednesday, December 22 from 12 until 1pm. Additional priests will be available to share the gift of God’s forgiveness and love. Make your heart shine brighter than all the Christmas lights outside by confessing your sins and receiving pardon for them! I want to invite our regular mission members, as well as, all the visitors and family members that come and visit during Christmas to celebrate Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day with us at Our Lady of Hope. There is “Christ” in Christmas. Without our religious participation in the worship together, our celebration of the season is missing the most important element - Jesus himself. He is the reason we gather together, He is the reason we celebrate, He is the reason for our joy, love and peace. Our Christmas schedule can be found on page 3. See you around the crib of Baby Jesus.

Our Lady of Hope, pray for us!

Holy Hour for Vocations At Our Lady of Hope

January 14, 2022 at 11 AM

Parishes across Chicago and neighboring dioceses will host a Holy Hour with a historic monstrance. The monstrance was a gift to Cardinal Mundelein from Pope Pius XI for the 1926 International Eucharistic Congress in Chicago—the first Congress to be held in the United States. The monstrance was used in a Eucharistic Procession during the closing ceremony of the Congress, which was held at Mundelein Seminary and attended by nearly 800,000 people. Please join us here on January 14th in prayerful thanksgiving for the thousands of parish priests who have devoted their lives to the Church as well as in praying that more men will answer the promptings of the Holy Spirit to discern their call. For more information about the scheduled Holy Hours and those parishes participating in this event, please visit www.100.usml.edu.

Coming soon! We will begin to distribute the Children’s Worship Bulle ns on December 26, 2021. Children will be given a bulle n to complete and return the following week for a treat!

Each bulle n is packed with Bible-based ac vi es.

Each bulle n has 4 panels packed with puzzles ... word searches ... seek-and-finds ... dot-to-dots ... and many more Bible-based ac vi es that children love. Two age-group versions are available. You can choose a bulle n appropriate for Ages 3-6 and the other bulle n for Ages 7-12. We hope to see all children par cipate to learn more about scripture in a fun way!

Third Sunday of Advent

St. Lucy was an early Chris an martyr who died during the Roman persecu ons. Accounts say that her eyes were gouged out when she was martyred, and therefore she is the patron of those with eye illnesses. Her feast day is o en celebrated with candles because, in the Northern Hemi-sphere, the day is among the shortest days of the year. St. Lucy is one of eight women included in the canon of the Mass. Today’s readings: Numbers 24:2–7, 15–17a; Psalm 25:4–5ab, 6, 7bc, 8–9; Ma hew 21:23–27.

St. John of the Cross, a doctor of the Church, was a priest, mys c, and writer who lived in Spain in the sixteenth century. One of his best-known works is The Dark Night of the Soul. He was a close collaborator of St. Teresa of Avila. Today’s readings: Zephaniah 3:1–2, 9–13; Psalm 34:2–3, 6–7, 17–18, 19, 23; Ma hew 21:28–32.

“The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” O en we wish for miraculous signs that will help us know where to go. But these ac ons of Jesus are that and more. The hope of the people of Israel was in a person who would bring about a new kingdom in which the sufferings of this world would be le behind. These par cular signs are a message to John the Bap st: Jesus is the long-awaited messiah. Today’s readings: Isaiah 45:6b–8, 18, 21c–25; Psalm 85:9ab, 10, 11–12, 13–14; Luke 7:18b–23.

God’s love will be constant, the covenant of peace unbroken, even if the mountains fall. While people o en disappoint us when commitments are not kept, God’s promise is not reliant on our faithfulness but on the faithfulness of God. We know that God is a keeper of promises: promises kept to Sarah, to Hannah, to Elizabeth, to Mary, to Noah, to Abraham, to Moses, to John the Bap st. We can trust that even in our darkest moments God is faithful to us as well. Today’s readings: Isaiah 54:1–10; Psalm 30:2, 4, 5–6, 11–12a, 13b; Luke 7:24–30.

Within the Church’s liturgical tradi on, the “O” An phons are prayed the seven days before Christmas. Each of these an phons presents a tle for the messiah. Many are familiar with these seven tles because they begin the verses of the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” The first an phon, which is used on December 17, is O Wisdom. You might sing this verse of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” or you might pray Evening Prayer. You can find resources online, including apps to assist you, in praying the Liturgy of the Hours. Today’s readings: Genesis 49:2, 8–10; Psalm 72:1–2, 3–4ab, 7–8, 17; Ma hew 1:1–17

St. Joseph was a righteous man, meaning he followed the law of Moses, and according to the Law, Mary would be put to death. St. Joseph also must have been a man of great compassion who was accustomed to God’s voice. When the angel came to him in a dream, he immediately believed. Moreover, he immediately acted. Today, spend

me in silent prayer so that, like Joseph, you may know your call when it comes and answer with your whole heart. Today’s readings: Jeremiah 23:5–8; Psalm 72:1–2, 12–13, 18–19; Ma hew 1:18–25.

Fourth Sunday of Advent

“Nothing will be impossible for God.” It is easy to be discouraged when confron ng a struggle. People have cried out to God throughout salva on history, longing to heal the brokenness in their lives and in the world. God’s solu on came in a way beyond their comprehension: God coming to experience human life and thereby redeem it. Consider illustra ng this Gospel passage or copying the Scripture. While you are reflec ng, meditate on these words: “Nothing will be impossible for God.” What are the seeming impossibili es in your life? Where might God provide solu ons beyond your imagina on? Today’s readings: Isaiah 7:10–14; Psalm 24:1–2, 3–4ab, 5–6; Luke

Imagine yourself alongside the newly pregnant Mary as she goes “in haste” across eighty miles of rough terrain, seeking out someone also experiencing a miraculous pregnancy. What did she see, hear, and think about as she was walking? We know that John the Bap st leapt for joy within his mother at the sound of Mary’s voice. What do you think Elizabeth felt when John leapt for joy? Today’s readings: Song of Songs 2:8–14 or Zephaniah 3:14–18a; Psalm 33:2–3, 11–12, 20–21; Luke 1:39–45.

Mary proclaims the Magnificat, her song of praise to God, in Luke 1:46–56. Copy the Scripture. Which words par cu-larly speak to you? While reading the Scriptures, we see how God has acted in history. This can help us to see what God is doing today. How do you see God ac ng as Mary proclaims? Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 1:24–28; 1 Samuel 2:1, 4–8; Luke 1:46–56.

In today’s Gospel, the birth of John is described as “the Lord had shown his great mercy toward” Elizabeth. When have you experienced God’s mercy? God kept the promise to Elizabeth, and in doing so, kept the promise of the prophets of old, that one would come who would prepare the way of the Lord. Today’s readings: Malachi 3:1–4, 23–24; Psalm 25:4–5ab, 8–9, 10, 14; Luke 1:57–66.

Laying out a Na vity can be a contempla ve experience. If you have already set up a Na vity, spend some me si ng before it in silent prayer. What do you no ce? Did you know that St. Francis of Assisi put together the first Na vi-ty? Na vi es have helped Chris ans to pray about the in-carna on for hundreds of years. Today’s readings: Morn-ing: 2 Samuel 7:1–5, 8b–12, 14a, 16; Psalm 89:2–3, 4–5, 27, 29; Luke 1:67–79.

Today we celebrate the incarna on, God becoming human that we might share in God’s divine life. We might wonder why God would choose to become something so vulnerable as a new baby. Why would God want to enter into the human condi on, with all its limita ons? Why would God enter into a world with sadness and suffering, and death? He came to open the way to a new possibility: a kingdom marked by jus ce, peace, and life. God’s love is more than anything we can imagine, and God’s will is for us to live in that love. Today’s readings: Night: Isaiah 9:1–6; Psalm 96:1–2, 2–3, 11–12, 13; Titus 2:11–14; Luke 2:1–14 ; Dawn: Isaiah 62:11–12; Psalm 97:1, 6, 11–12; Titus 3:4–7; Luke 2:15–20; Day: Isaiah 52:7–10; Psalm 89:2–3, 4–5, 27, 29; Hebrews 1:1–6; John 1:1–18 or 1:1–5, 9–14.

Advent Reconcilia on Service The Advent Season is a me of special prepara on for the Coming of the Infant Jesus into our homes, our hearts and our churches. When we know that someone special is coming to our home during the holiday’s you take extra me to make sure that your home is sparkling clean and ready for your guest. Jesus, our special guest is coming soon and students in Levels 3 thru 8 of our Religious Educa on program will be afforded this opportunity to clean their souls by par cipa ng in the Advent Reconcilia on Service during the December 14th class.

Advent Wreath The most significant tradi on of the Advent season is the Advent wreath. The wreath which is circular and made of various ever-greens, signifies con nuous life, the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul and the everlas ng life we find in God. The laurels signify victory over persecu on and suffering. The pine, holly and yew signify immortality and the cedar signifies strength and healing. The pine cones symbolize life and resurrec on. The candles have their own special meaning. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. One candle is lit each week. Three of the candles are purple, signifying a me of penance, prayer and sacrifice. The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes Hope and is some mes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophet Isaiah who foretold the birth of Jesus. It represents the expecta on felt in an cipa on of the Lord’s coming. The second candle, also purple, represents faith. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” reminding us of Joseph and Mary’s trip to Bethlehem. The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is called the “Shepherd’s Candle”. Pink is the liturgical color for joy. The third Sun-day of Advent is “Guadete Sunday” meant to remind us of the joy the world experiences at the birth of Jesus and the midpoint of Advent. On the fourth week of Advent we light the purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance. This final candle, the “Angel’s Candle” symbolizes peace. It reminds us of the message of the angels “Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards Men.” Some mes a white candle is placed in the middle of the wreath; this is a modern adapta on. The white candle is lit on Christmas Eve. It is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ who is our sinless, pure Savior.

Mission News & Events Uncle Pete’s Sandwich Ministry THANKS to all the people of Our Lady of Hope for their generosity and good will. In 2021, our mission church has collected 15% of the total collec on of 4,520 sandwich bag dinners for Uncle Pete’s Ministry. We are blessed with generous people and volunteers at Our Lady of Hope.

We are also grateful for Carolyn Murphy at St. John Brebeauf for scheduling and overseeing all of the deliveries to over 20 different loca ons that include shelters, homes, soup kitchens, and other organiza ons who serve the less fortunate. What a marvelous ministry that involves so many good people. God Bless all of you!

Mary & Joel Puente Coordinators of Uncle Pete’s Sandwich Ministry A note from Carolyn Murphy…….. This year there were 74 sack events with 27,170 sacks collected and delivered. As COVID dynamics happened, we were able to work with our sack makers and receivers to bring sacks to many people. Our financial resources con nue to provide opportuni es for more people to get involved. We will post a financial report for year end in January.

You can all be proud of your efforts to serve those in need. It always amazes me how this small idea from Uncle Pete and Fr. Clem has flourished to serve so many people. We are thankful for them and the opportunity to con nue this ministry. This year, more of you have had the opportunity to form rela onships with the people we serve. The rela onships with sack makers has grown as well. It helps us to stay relevant to the needs of people we serve.

2022 will bring similar challenges and some new ones. Our cri cal point con nues to migrate to different elements of our endeavors. We do need to think about other people we could invite to be volunteers and help with setup, collec on, and/or delivery. There is no be er recrui ng tool than a personal invita on. Training is simple and there are no mee ngs with this ministry. I will try to con nue to iden fy the three components of setup, collec on, and delivery to provide the opportunity for you to support one component of an event.

We are very indebted to SJB personnel and the ability to use all the facili es to accomplish our work. Take the opportunity to thank the people whenever you can. Carolyn Murphy

Friends of Our Lady of Hope, your generosity towards others is outstanding. You responded most graciously to our “Hats, Gloves, Scarves, Mi ens and Sock Drive”. When all was bagged and ready, we collected seven 55-gallon bags full of warm clothing items. These items will be distributed to many homeless and other people in need by the Salva on Army Outreach and the Des Plaines Self Help Closet Food Pantry and the Breakfast for Babies Organiza on. The collec on this year was our largest ever. Thank you for your concern for the people of God who have less and need our help. Once again, all of you have responded to the call. May your Christmas Season be blessed. You are most generous!

Christmas Food Baskets We Need Your Help!

Thanks for your con nued generosity to help stock our food pantry. Our pantry is very low in inventory for the Christmas dinners. We need such items as canned meat, ham, tuna, spaghe sauce, pasta sauce, peanut bu er, jelly, soup, canned sweet potatoes, boxed mash potatoes, peas, cereal, and rice which would help round out our supplies. The Christmas food baskets will be distributed on Saturday, December 18, 2021. Please bring your dona ons of food by Friday, December 17th.

If you know of someone or you would like a Christmas Food Basket, please call Geriann at 847-825-4673 ext. 21 or email ggen le@ourladyo opechurch.com. Thank you!
