In the missionary spirit of our patron saint, and under the protection of Mary, the Mother of the Church, we
desire to evangelize and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
The miraculous catch of fish symbolizes the Mission of the Apostles to be “fishers of men.” The large catch shows how successful the disciples can be with Jesus’ help. The meal symbolizes the Eucharistic meal in which Jesus is present among them and feeds them. Peter, who three times denied his Master, is now given three chances to profess his love, and then is given a mandate to care for the Lord’s flock. In giving au-thority to the man who denied Him, Jesus wanted to show that He was establishing His Church not on human strength, but on His own love and faithfulness. Let us remember the times we have written people off, or taken revenge on them, when they disappointed us.
Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — (Acts 5: 27-32,40-41) The Apostles have been imprisoned and put on trial because of their preaching of the Gospel. But they are undeterred. In fact, they are glad to suffer for Christ. Psalm — (Psalm 30) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
Second Reading — (Rev. 5: 11-14) This gives us part of the Heavenly Liturgies that are a feature of the Book of the Apocalypse. It is a hymn in praise of the Crucified and Risen Christ. Gospel— (John 21: 1-19) This relates an appearance of the Risen Jesus to seven of His Apostles on the shore of the Lake of Gennesaret. The incident is built around Peter.
REFLECTION: HOW DO YOU HANDLE FAILURE?
Nobody likes to fail. The Apostles had failed. But the Stranger on the shore got them to say: “We caught nothing - we failed.” If we can say these words in the presence of someone we trust, then suddenly failure loses its power over us. It is sometimes easier to say them to a sympathetic stranger, than to a friend. Then the Stranger told them to let down the net once more. They did so and made a large catch of fish. This shows that even when Christ is only a shadowy figure on the margins of our lives, we are still okay if we do what He says. But once Peter recognized the Stranger, he wanted to encounter Him. He wanted to be near Him. There is a world of difference between those who have encountered the Risen Lord, and those who obey a stranger. The Risen Lord nourished those who encountered Him, and He gave them a task to do. He said to them: “Feed my lambs, feed my sheep.”

PARISH NEWS
Congratulations Father Charles!
The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and meaningful part of our Catholic tradition. In our Parish, there are many requests for scheduling such Mass intentions.
Mass Intentions for 2023 are now available in the Parish Office. If you would like to request a Mass
for a particular date in 2023, you must request them in person. The dates fill up quickly and are $10 each.
What a beautiful evening on Monday, April 18th, as the Parish came together to honor our Pastor, Father Charles, as
he celebrated his 40th Anniversary of Ordination. It started with Mass at 6PM, followed by a lively wine and
hors d’ouevres reception in McCall Hall. A big THANK YOU to the |Jubilee Committee who put on an awesome
event...and to Father Charles for being so dedicated to your Vocation, and our Parish.
A Note of Gratitude: I am very grateful to those who assisted in any way with Father Charles’ Anniversary, and for all who contributed towards his group gift. You are the best! Love,
Janet Friederich

UNDERSTANDING THE MASS- The Psalms in the Liturgy The Book of Psalms is a prayer book, hymnal, and anthology of verse all rolled into one. It contains one hundred fifty ancient songs—poem-prayers that express the joys and sorrows of the Hebrew people and their longing for God. The psalms are incredibly varied in tone. Some are solemn anthems of praise that once accompanied processions of great multitudes to the temple; others record the lonely cries of a faithful soul who feels aban-doned by God. This ancient prayer book of the Hebrew people is our principal prayer book as well. The psalms are everywhere in the liturgy—in the antiphons and acclamations of the Mass, and most particularly in the responsorial psalm that follows the first reading. The psalm that is sung at Mass usually echoes the themes of the first reading, and sometimes even comments on it.
