Pastoral Musings ~ The Law of Love

But now we are released from the law, dead to what held us captive, so that we may serve in the newness of the spirit and not under the obsolete letter.

-Romans 7.6

I n song and dance the ancient Israelites celebrated the law. They thought of it as refreshment for the soul, trusted wisdom for the heart. They understood it as God’s living Word among them. But those ten com-mandments revealed to Moses on the mountain became over 600 exacting laws over the course of time.

From their guidance, daily life took shape for Israel.

Every land has its customs and rules. Some gods rule by fear and harsh demands. But Yahweh delivered law in a personal way. The essential message of the commandments says: “I am your God. We have been through a lot together. Keep me at your heart. We have worked hard, so let us rest on the sabbath. Teach your children to be as I AM. The path to holiness is within reach. Respect one another and live together in peace. And never forget my love for you.”

But for some people, law is engraved in black and white. Their leaders rule with a rod. Don’t ask questions. Don’t think. Just obey. Only the few with authority get to judge what is right from what is wrong. Law, tra-dition, and boundaries seem to be necessary in any system both to reveal and to limit our basic proclivity to selfishness. Law in that sense is what makes at least some level of community, family, and marriage possible. Boundaries seem to be the only way that human beings can find a place to stand, a place to begin, a place from which to move out. Even those who think they do not need any boundaries usually do. We discover them when we trespass against them. The law helps the human soul flourish on solid ground, especially in the younger years of life.

“If you keep the law, the law will keep you,” we were told in school. As earnest seminarians anxious to suc-ceed, we replied, “Yes, Father!” We knew how to survive in any closed system. I am afraid we spent so much time in that world that it became the whole agenda. Canon Law was quoted more often to us than the Sermon on the Mount – even following upon the reforms of the Second Vatican Council – and now the young priests are being taught in much the same way. A strong emphasis on law and order makes for a sane board-ing school, or an organized anything, for that matter. I really get that. But that isn’t anything even close to what the Gospel is calling us to. The Gospel was not made to help organizations run smoothly. The full Gos-pel was actually meant to create a struggle for the soul much more than resolve the organizational problems of institutions.

Law, in and of itself, diminishes our humanity. If God created us as robots, there would be no need for law. Law actually depends on human freedom. As reflection deepens, law illuminates the diverse strands of every human situation we face. It forces us to ponder our complexity and to seek understanding; we learn to detect hypocrisy. The commandments we memorized as children were meant to direct us to something deeper. And when that happens, both young and old can always bring fresh insight to the table.

Human beings seem to need to fight and engage with something before they ever take it seriously—and be-fore they can discover what will bring us to a richer sense of our common humanity. The people who never fight religion, guilt, parents, injustice, friends, marriage partners, or civil laws usually don’t respect their own power, importance, and freedom. They remain content with the external values of the law instead of work-ing to discover their own inner authority. The Spirit will always speak through the whole – much more so than through the “enlightened.” And if we listen closely enough to one another, we will be able to stumble forward together. Both Jesus and Paul knew that rules and requirements were simply meant to get you seri-ously engaged with the need for grace and mercy; they were never meant to be an end in themselves (read Romans 7.7ff). The proper response of Christians to the Law, therefore, is not mere obedience but deeper knowledge – and love – of the Lawgiver. The Word of God must be heard in faith and rooted in love. This is how the Law of the Lord become the words of everlasting life.

It’s a place to hang out, eat dinner, chat about meaningful things, and have fun. This time together is facilitated by our teens on our Teen Advisory Board and caring adults. The get-togethers loosely have a framework of a fun activity, dinner while getting updates on what’s happening with everyone, dis-cussion topic to start but go wherever it leads, Q&A, and wrap up. Some evenings will have special events like Trivia night, stump the priest, movies, amateur hour, guest speakers, etc. Additionally, we hope to plan some outings of fun activities, camping, service, and more.
