October is Respect Life MonthOn March 25, 2020, the Church celebrated the 25th anniversary of St. Pope John Paul II’s encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life). This prophetic document reaffirmed the Church’s constant teaching on the value of and the inviolability of of every human life. In this encyclical, the Holy Father explains that the Gospel of Life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world. Through the Incarnation of Christ, God reveals to us the dignity of all human life. Each of us is made in the image and likeness of God, reflecting his glory and his imprint. We are therefore called to “respect, defend, and promote the dignity of every human person, at every moment and in every condition of that person’s life.”

The Holy Father outlines the many challenges that expectant mothers may face, including the lack of support from the father, financial strains, concern about her own health or that of her child, and pressures from family or friends. Pope John Paul II recognizes that “an unborn child is totally entrusted to the protection and care of the woman carrying him or her in the womb.” For this reason, it is particularly important that the Church come alongside mothers, encouraging them encouragement, assistance, and support.

The Pope tasked us with building a culture of life to combat the forces at work in the culture of death. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2020 launched a year of service, entitled: Walking With Moms in Need. An immediate way you can help is to support 40 Days for Life from now until November 1st. Our parish’s next requested day of prayer is Tuesday, October 13th, but you may join others for a peaceful prayer vigil on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood every day from 7am until 7pm. You may also pray at the Holy Innocents Chapel inside Project Defending Life, 729 San Mateo Blvd NE.

For more information, contact Project Defending Life at 505-266-4100.

From Deacon Rudy....

OCTOBER 4, 2020 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (Year A)ISAIAH 5:1-7 PHILIPPIANS 4:6-9 MATTHEW 21:33-43

Please note that we have been reading from the Gospel of Matthew every Sunday since Fathers’ Day, June 21,2020.We will continue to read from Matthew until the Sunday before Advent, November 29, the First Sunday of Advent. The fourth Sunday of Advent comes five days before a most significant time, when we celebrate the Birth of the founder of our Church, and the son of God, Jesus Christ. The Church has chosen the readings to prepare us and to help us understand the significance of our faith.

Matthew’s Gospel takes us from the Old Testament to the New. We read about Abraham, Isaac, Judah, Perez, Zerah (son of Tamar), Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nashon, Salmon, Boaz (son of Rahab), Obed (son of Ruth), Jesse, and David. This is the line of relations that takes us from Abraham to David. From David, Matthew takes us to Solomon, to Rehoboam, to Abijah, to Asaph, to Jehoshaphat, to Joram, to Uzziah, to Jotham, to Ahaz, to Hezekiah, to Manasseh, to Amos, to Josiah, to Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the Babylonian exile, then we read about the son of Jechoniah to Shealtiel, to Zerubbabel, to Abiud, to Eliakim, to Azor, to Zadok, to Achim, to Eliud, to Eleazar, to Matthan, Jacob, to St. Joseph. Matthew explains that there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

We are preparing to celebrate the birth of the Son of God, Jesus, Our Savior, who became human while remaining Divine, so that we have access to eternal life in spite of all our weaknesses. Jesus taught, led by example, and suffered a horrible death so that we can look forward to living eternally with Him, Our Father, the Holy Spirit, the angels and saints. Jesus left us His Church that makes it possible for us to participate in the use of the sacraments that He initiated so that we are prepared to enjoy eternal happiness. Because of His love for us, He left His Church that provides us with the benefits of forgiveness of sins, the means to understand the importance of living a life that knows Him, loves Him and serves Him. We may take advantage of being in His presence in Body, Blood, Soul and divinity every day by attending Holy Mass, and by living exemplary ways. We can have our sins forgiven. We can visit His presence in the tabernacle. We can take a moment to pray whenever we want to say a few words or to just think of Him.

The Gospel reading for this Sunday is about a landowner who planted a vineyard, prepared it for producing wine, and leased it, then went on a journey, and he sent servants to obtain the produce. The tenants mistreated and killed the servants, so the landowner sent his son thinking that the tenants would respect the son, but the tenants killed the son in order to acquire his inheritance. How will the landowner treat those who killed his son? We can appreciate the importance of the ramifications of a father whose son is mistreated and killed when we associate the example of the gospel message with the torture and killing of the Son of God. We have a vague experience with the missing portions of the Mass and the limited access to Church related activities, but what can we do to show God that we are truly sorry for offending His Son in the way that we have misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misdirected the Church He instituted? We can do our best to show our thankfulness by attending Mass and living a life of appreciation when we help those in need of assistance, and by praying for those affected by the Corona virus.

Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.

— Philippians 4:6
