THE NATURE OF OUR CALLING / LA NATURALEZA DE NUESTRO LLAMADO

Whenever I read this Sunday's Gospel story, I have to wonder,how did Jesus catch the fish he was barbecuing when thedisciples came ashore? Did he have a net, too? Did he buy itin town with the bread? If so, didn't anyone recognize him?Or maybe the fish just jumped out of the water onto the fire!And maybe he turned stone into bread, like Satan had oncetempted him to do.

Reflect back upon the miracle of the multiplication of loavesand fish. Same foods: bread and fish. Same miracle! It doesnot matter how little we have or even whether we have anything at all. God the Creator has an infinite supply and isable to produce an abundance of everything. It's never basedon what we have; it's always based on the love he has for us.

What he wants from us is the willingness to do the work ofsharing what God provides. In the miracle of feeding thecrowd, the disciples were asked to distribute the multipliedfood. In the miracle of the huge catch of fish, the discipleswere asked to "bring some of the fish you caught" and add itto the meal that Jesus was already cooking.

Afterward, Peter was asked to share the love he had forJesus with the "sheep". From where does love come? Peterdidn't love anybody by his own efforts; none of us do. Peterwas created with God's love already in him, as we all were,for we were made in the image of God who is love.

Peter's calling was to share the abundance of God's love, sothat the kingdom of God could continue to spread throughout the earth. What is God asking you to do? The answer does not lie in what you have, but in what you arewilling to do with what God already has.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

What work for the kingdom of God (the parish, a friend, acommunity program) have you felt a desire to do but haven'tyet done because your net feels empty? Assume that Jesusis asking you to do it; what action can you take this weekthat will toss your net over the other side of the boat?

Cada vez que leo la historia del Evangelio de estedomingo, tengo que preguntarme, ¿cómo pescó Jesús elpez que estaba asando cuando los discípulos llegaron atierra? ¿Tenía una red también? ¿Lo compró en la ciudadcon el pan? Si fue así, ¿es que nadie lo reconoció? ¡O talvez el pescado saltó fuera del agua sobre el fuego! Y talvez convirtió la piedra en pan, como lo había tentado Satanás una vez.

Reflexione, nuevamente, sobre el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces. Los mismos alimentos: pan y pescado. ¡El mismo milagro! No importalo poco que tenemos, o incluso si no tenemos nada en absoluto. Dios el Creador tiene un suministro infinito y escapaz de producir de todo en abundancia. Nunca se basaen lo que tenemos; siempre se basa en el amor que tienepor nosotros.

Lo que quiere de nosotros es la voluntad de hacer la obrade compartir lo que Dios provee. En el milagro de alimentar a la multitud, se pidió a los discípulos distribuirla comida multiplicada. En el milagro de la enorme cantidad de peces, se les pidió a los discípulos "traer algunos de los peces que atraparon" y añadirlo a la comida que Jesús ya estaba cocinando.

Después, se le pidió a Pedro compartir con la "oveja" elamor que sentía por Jesús. ¿De dónde viene el amor?Pedro no amaba a nadie por su propio esfuerzo; ningunode nosotros puede. Pedro fue creado ya con el amor deDios en él, al igual que todos nosotros, porque fuimos hechos a imagen de Dios que es amor.

El llamado de Pedro fue compartir la abundancia del amorde Dios, para que el reino de Dios pudiese seguir extendiéndose por toda la tierra. ¿Qué está Dios, pidiéndole que haga? La respuesta no está en lo quetienes, sino en lo que estás dispuesto a hacer con lo queDios ya tiene.

Preguntas para la Reflexión Personal:

¿Qué trabajo para el reino de Dios (la parroquia, un amigo,un programa de la comunidad) ha sentido el deseo dehacer, pero aún no lo ha hecho porque su red parecevacía? Asume que Jesús le pide que lo haga; ¿qué acciones puede tomar, esta semana, que hará que lancesu red sobre el otro lado de la barca?

LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL CUPICH / CARTA DEL CARDENAL CUPICHIt is quite remarkable that none of the stories of the

resurrection of Jesus actually recount his coming out of the tomb andhow he was raised by God from the dead. But, we do have stories aboutwhat happened to his disciples. Easter created in them a sense of belonging and the awareness that instead of living for themselves, theywere being called to a mission that would be nothing less than changingthe course of history.

This is a story we need in our time. Today, many people question the meaning and purpose of life and their identity as human beings. They live with the feeling of alienation, being disconnected fromothers, a community or past traditions. They feel abandoned in a world ofhostile challenges and aimless pursuits.

Easter offers an antidote to these feelings of malaise. Itprovides a resounding answer to the questions about our meaning andpurpose in life by drawing us out of our isolation and inviting us to livewithin the story of God's love for us - a love that knows no bounds. Themessage of Easter is simply this: Even though we killed the Son of God,God has not abandoned us. On the contrary. God raised Jesus so that hecould come back from the dead to be with us, reminding us that we tooare God's sons and daughters.

God never abandons us and we should never abandon one another. Easter is our coming home to be God's family. As we celebrateChrist coming back from the dead to be with us, there is a special joy inbeing able to return to our parish communities this year after two yearsof separation due to the pandemic. I urge you to experience that joy. It isthe joy the first disciples experienced in being reunited with each otherafter being scattered in fear and division with the death of Jesus. It was ahomecoming in which Christ, who first brought them together along theshores of Galilee, was now calling them to be with him and with eachother in a new way.

I invite you to look upon this Easter Season as new homecoming after being separated by the pandemic. This Easter Time,discover once again the presence of Christ as your parish communitygathers for the Eucharist. Let this Easter Time be a new opportunity toshare with your fellow parishioners the experience of having a commonpurpose, identity and call to leave behind fear and death and make a difference in the world.

Take up with fresh energy the task of making disciples, buildingcommunity and inspiring witness through service in a Church that actsas a field hospital in a suffering world. We need to come together to encounter Christ anew and to rediscover who we are as an Easter Peoplewho make a difference in the world. It is in making a difference in theworld that we find the answers to the questions about the meaning andpurpose of life and our identity. And we do this together, as the disciplesof Christ who are raised from the death of fear and isolation to live in relationship with each other, in community.

Our parishes depend on each of us to make the personal commitment to form that communitv of disciples that acts as field hospital for one another and the world. So, as I urge you to return to yourparish for in-person worship, think of it as a homecoming, in which wegather to celebrate Christ rising from the dead because we too have risenfrom the dead. Happy Easter.

Es bastante llamativo que ninguno de los relatos de la Resurrección deJesús cuente realmente su salida de la tumba y cómo fue resucitado porDios de entre los muertos. Pero tenemos historias sobre lo que les ocurrió a sus discípulos. La Pascua creó en ellos un sentido depertenencia y la conciencia de que, en lugar de vivir para sí mismos, estaban llamados a una misión que sería nada menos que cambiar elcurso de la historia.

Esta es una historia que necesitamos en nuestro tiempo. Hoyen día, muchas personas se cuestionan el sentido y la finalidad de la viday su identidad como seres humans. Viven con el sentimiento de alienación, de estar desconectados de los demás, de una comunidad ode las tradiciones pasadas. Se sienten abandonados en un mundo de desafíos hostiles y perseguimientos sin rumbo.

La Pascua ofrece un antídoto para estos sentimientos demalestar. Proporciona una respuesta rotunda a las prequntas sobre nuestro sentido y propósito en la vida, sacándonos de nuestro aislamiento e invitándonos a vivir dentro de la historia del amor de Diospor nosotros, un amor que no conoce límites. El mensaje de la Pascua essimplemente éste: Aunque hayamos matado al Hijo de Dios, Dios no nosha abandonado. Todo lo contrario. Dios resucitó a Jesús para quevolviera de entre los muertos y estuviera con nosotros, recordándonosque también nosotros somos hijos e hijas de Dios.

Dios nunca nos abandona y nosotros nunca debemos abandonarnos unos a otros. La Pascua es una vuelta a casa paraser la familia de Dios. Al celebrar que Cristo regrese de los muertos paraestar con nosotros, hay una alegría especial en poder regresar a nuestrascomunidades parroquiales este año después de dos años de separacióndebido a la pandemia. Los animo a que experimenten esa alegría. Es laalegría que los primeros discípulos experimentaron al ser reunidos unoscon otros después de ser esparcidos en miedo y división con lamuerte de Jesús. Era una vuelta a casa en la que Cristo, que los reuniópor primera vez en las orillas de Galilea, los llamaba ahora a estar con ély entre ellos de una forma nueva.

Los invito a considerar esta Pascua como una nueva vuelta acasa después de haber sido separados por la pandemia. Esta Pascua, descubran una vez más la presencia de Cristo cuando su comunidadparroquial se reúna para la Eucaristía. Que la Pascua sea una nueva oportunidad para compartir con sus compañeros feligreses la experiencia de tener un propósito, una identidad y una llamada comunesa dejar atrás el miedo y la muerte y marcar una diferencia en el mundo.

Asuman con nuevas energías la tarea de hacer discípulos, construir comunidad e inspirar el testimonio a través del servicio en unalalesia que actúa como un hospital de campaña en un mundo que sufre.Tenemos que reunirnos para volver a encontrar a Cristo y redescubrirquiénes somos como pueblo pascual que marca la diferencia en elmundo. Es al marcar la diferencia en el mundo cuando encontramos lasrespuestas a las preguntas sobre el significado y el propósito de la vida ynuestra identidad. Y lo hacemos juntos, como discípulos de Cristo que selevantan de la muerte del miedo y del aislamiento para vivir en relaciónunos con otros, en comunidad.

Nuestras parroquias dependen de cada uno de nosotros parahacer el compromiso personal de formar esa comunidad de discípulosque actúa como hospital de campo el uno para el otro v para el mundo.Así que, mientras les insto a que vuelvan a su parroquia para el culto enpersona a partir de esta Pascua, piensen en ello como una vuelta a casa,en la que nos reunimos para celebrar que Cristo ha resucitado de entrelos muertos porque nosotros también hems resucitado de entre losmuertos.
