October 2 –3, 2021 Talking about stranger danger The idea of “stranger danger” is often too broad a concept for children to grasp as not all strangers are danger-ous, and children will always be meeting new people and on occasion may need to ask a stranger for help. Instead of issuing a blanket warn-ing, try these tips for keeping children safe around people they do not know. If an unknown adult approaches them, have them check with a parent or known and trusted adult before engaging in conversation. This can be as simple as a quick look to the parent followed by a nod indicat-ing that it is okay to interact. As an adult yourself, you can set a good example by talking first to parents, then to children in their care. This helps your own children see how trustworthy adults engage with children around their parents and helps them learn caution for adults who do not act in the same way. THE BARRIERS THAT SEPARATE US We live in a society that has many technological avenues for s mula on and entertainment, one in which the urban popula-
on exceeds the non-urban. It is curious that loneliness is a prevalent malady. It is easy to reach out and touch someone, we are told. But—in truth—it is not all that easy, and sta s cs from the mental health field will reinforce that opinion. Today’s readings are about the ways in which we can authen cally reach out: God touches Adam to create a mate and end his soli-tude; God-in-Jesus takes on human flesh and death in order that we might come to glory; Jesus reaches out to the children whom the disciples had tried to keep away, showing us the manner in which we must approach the loving embrace that awaits us in heaven. Un l that day, however, we must remem-ber that ours is a sacramental church, a church of signs of the love of God. And so we are called to reach out con nually to ease the loneliness and the barriers that separate us from one another and, therefore, from the love of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
