Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. [Matt 10:37-38]

Is Jesus anti-family? To believe in Jesus is a rela-

tionship so profound that it claims a deeper allegiance

than even family ties. The hopes of his disciples were

more focused on Jesus than their own families and live-

lihoods. Jesus was looking for commitment, so he was

laying it on the line here. To be worthy of Jesus was to

be capable of sharing close fellowship, open and fo-

cused on Jesus and not distracted. Jesus is asking for

a single-heartedness, a mindfulness of God’s reign that

was a new kind of existence: faith.

True intimacy with Jesus means we know and ac-

cept the shape/weight of his cross in our own lives with-

out undue drama and trauma. Discipleship means we

are not naïve, but grounded and know how to handle

our pain and suffering creatively because of our trust

and knowledge of Jesus. We can move past hostility to

hospitality, and from loneliness to solitude with Jesus.

Questions for the week: When do I make time for

Jesus each day? What feeds my friendship with him?

In what practical ways do I share this with others?

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “El que quiera a su padre o a

su madre más que a mí no es digno de mí y el que quie-

ra a su hijo o a su hija más que a mí no es digno de mí;

y el que no tome su cruz y me siga no es digno de mí.

[Mateo 10:37-38]

¿Esta Jesús en contra de la familia? Creer en Jesús

es una relación tan profunda que clama una más profun-

da alianza aun que los lazos familiares. La esperanza

de sus discípulos estaba más enfocada en Jesús que en

sus familias y maneras de ganarse la vida. Jesús esta-

ba pidiendo un compromiso, así que estaba poniéndolo

en la mesa. Ser digno de Jesús era el ser capaz de

compartir su amistad, abierta y enfocada en Jesús sin

distracciones. Jesús está pidiendo un corazón sencillo,

una atención del reino que era una nueva forma de exis-

tencia: fe.

Verdadera intimidad con Jesús significa el conocer y

aceptar la forma/peso de su cruz en nuestras propias

vidas sin drama o trauma. Ser discípulo significa que no

somos inocentes, pero más bien que tenemos los pies

sobre la tierra y sabemos cómo sobrellevar nuestro do-

lor y sufrimiento creativamente por nuestra confianza y

conocimiento de Jesús. No podemos movernos más

allá de hostilidad a hospitalidad y desde la soledad a

preocuparnos con Jesús.

Pregunta de la semana: ¿Cuándo le doy tiempo a

Jesús cada día? ¿Que alimenta mi amistad con él? ¿En

que maneras prácticas comparto esto con otros?

Musical Transition Time - Mr. Mervyn Humphreys has retired as organist at St. Joseph ’s last Sunday, June 25. We had a wonderful reception after the 10:30 Mass & thanked him for his 3 and ½ years of ministry with us. The choir gave him a calming Wind Chime, with deep organ tones. The Parish gave him an elegant stat-ue of King David the minstrel. Lulu Gomez (from the Hispanic Community) made him an awesome Tres Leche’ Thank You Cake! The choir did a scrumptious light luncheon in Mervyn’s honor; all expressed our grat-itude for this wonderful man’s ministry with us. Mr.Tim Remmel is trying on the position of organist with us. He has played for many of the other churches in town and has played on occasion for us.

While you are on vacation this summer, Thank You for not forgetting your parish! While we have fewer folks around, our expenses are higher because of the heat. Last July, our Utili-ties amounted to $2,778; our parish assess-ment (tax to the diocese) $1,419; our pastor’s Health Insurance/Welfare etc. $2,708; our prop-erty insurance $2,816 – just to give you a few of the “normal bills.” We ARE actually doing better so far this summer with our collections than last

year. Thank you for being “mindful stewards” as we tighten our belts and do without some things that are not absolutely essential. Pray that it’s not the Air Conditioning!

RCIA – The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults – will begin again on Tuesday evening, July 18, at 7:15 in the Parish Hall for all those who are interested in learning about the Catholic Faith. This Inquiry phase does not require any neces-sary commitment to the Catholic Church, just a commitment to study its teachings, history, scrip-tures, and the spiritual formation process that make a person Catholic. This Parish Family celebration of July 4: Fam-ily gathering early on the morning of July 4 to cel-ebrate a simple Mass outside, at 9 AM, will be fol-lowed by a shared brunch (in the hall if the heat is high already), and then we will enjoy the children as they compete in patriotically decorating baby carriages, tricycles and bicycles.
