Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Where two or three are gathered in my name, there

am I in the midst of them.” [Matthew 18:20]

The Greek word EKKLESIA (church) is common in

the New Testament but rare in the gospels. Its Hebrew

roots mean “assembly” or “gathering” of believers.

Ekklesia describes a group of God’s people who share

a common purpose, history, set of values and sense

of family. By the gift of our Baptism, we are called out

by God’s love to join with other Christian’s to continue

the mission of Christ. We are GIFTED with a rich sup-

ply of God’s grace and mercy to hand on to others as

gift what we have received as gift.

As Stewards of the household of God, God is at

work in us, enabling the church to reconcile the lost

and the estranged, to restore ties of affection among

people and to pray for the realization of God’s dreams

to come true in us. I have invited Lee and Debbie

Tipps and Dr. Victor Aranda to share with you what

they see happening in the parish in terms of our re-

sponse to God’s call to be Stewards and missionary

disciples for the Lord.

Questions for the week: Who are the members of

your house-ekklesia? Do you really pray with them?

Stewards work for the fulfillment of God’s dreams.

How are you a steward in the household of God?

Your pastor - Fr. Bob Cushing

Domingo Veintitrés en el Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

He invi-

Father of Mercy, your Holy Spirit has called us from many lands and cultures to become the faith community of St. Joseph Parish. Montse Diaz has agreed to help chair the leadership team but we need one more English speak-ing person and one Hispanic. Do you want to grow in devotion to the Eucharist with our whole parish? A Tweet from Pope Francis: God’s mercy is

forever; it never ends, it never runs out, it nev-

er gives up when faced with closed doors, and

it never tires.

From Pope Francis: “This is what Baptism works in us: it gives us Grace and hands on the faith to us. All of us in the Church are dis-

ciples … forever, our whole lifelong; and we are all missionaries, each in the place the Lord has assigned to him or her. Everyone – the littlest one is also a missionary.” (January 15, 2014)

The family of Darvin Williams wishes to thank all the people for their calls, visits and wonderful food. Also the choir for the beautiful music during his service. Thank you Fr. Bob for your thoughtfulness, compassion and beautiful eulogy. It is wonderful to have such a loving church family.

The Bishop Gartland Award: This weekend September 9-10, we will vote for a person whom we think should receive the Bishop Gart-land Service Award. Like Mother Teresa in In-dia, Bishop Gartland sacrificed himself for the people of the Diocese of Savannah and died during the yellow fever epidemic in 1854, the first Bishop of the diocese. Who has given themselves generously to the service of the parish? Please give some thought and prayer to this and vote this weekend.

Former recipients of the Gartland Award: Michael Johnson and Gus & Barbara Karle (2000), Maryann Dixon and Ann Johnson (2001), Linda Booker (2002), James E Boyett and Johanna T Boyett (2003), Michael Frawley and Ruth Sinconis (2004), Pat & Lillie Morris (2006), Joe & Nina Palmer (2008), and Carlene Murray (2009), Juanita Sosa and Joe Woodruff (2013), Margaret Milkas and Ana Velez (2015), Lee Tipps and Dr. Victor Aranda(2106).

Pasados recipientes del Premio Gartland: Mi-chael Johnson y Gus & Barbara Karle (2000), Maryann Dixon y Ann Johnson (2001), Linda Booker (2002), James E Boyett y Johanna T Bo-yett (2003), Michael Frawley y Ruth Sinconis (2004), Pat & Lillie Morris (2006), Joe & Nina Palmer (2008), y Carlene Murray (2009), Juanita Sosa y Joe Woodruff (2013), Margaret Milkas y Ana Velez (2015), Lee Tipps y Dr. Victor Aranda (2106).

Youth Group will meet this Sunday morning, Septem-ber 10, at 9 AM. We ask that all members of the youth ministry, please, if you have not already done so, register this weekend for PRE so that we can meet together on Sunday mornings and enter this year as a time of sharing our journey of faith in many and various adventures soon to be planned.
