Divine Mercy Sunday April 28, 2019

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe!” Thomas answered, “My Lord and my God!” [John 20: 27-28]

As Easter continues to dawn upon us and gently con-front us with the locked doors of our own hearts, today we have the figure of St. Thomas whom I like to call “Honest Thomas.” He was missing when Jesus appeared to the dis-ciples the first time. When the disciples said that they has seen him alive and repeated how he gave them the Holy Spirit, he stubbornly refused to believe it. I often wonder why he refused to trust them. Maybe it was they had their own petty issues that were still not resolved and forgiven. Maybe it was that they were still stuck in their fears and “the doors were still locked.” Maybe it was that they – as a com-munity – were so slow to implement the forgiveness and mercy that Jesus had spoken about that he just did not find them believable.

So the transforming grace of the resurrected Jesus came to them again, to cast out their deeper fears that God is NOT intimately connected to the mystery of our suffering to bring good out of evil. Thomas had stubbornly resisted believing his friends. So Jesus came again and said, “OK, Tom, you said you needed to see and touch my wounds so that you can believe. Go ahead!” This powerful moment of decisive encounter never says that Thomas actually did so, but the text goes on to say that he now believed, giving the most powerful acclamation of faith in the whole gospel when he answered, “My Lord and my God!” How about you? Do you believe that God’s Divine Mercy is there for you to confront whatever obstacle is keeping you from rec-onciling to God?

Question for the week: What keeps us from really being able to say and believe “Jesus, I trust in you”? What makes us not believe another’s witness to the Risen Christ?

Word for the week: “believe”: faith is not just consent to dogma and doctrine. Believing is putting your trust in a per-son, ultimately the person of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for the many cards and gifts to enrich my own experience of the Risen Christ in our community. It is nice to feel appreciated and the feedback from those who at-tended the Holy Triduum was most helpful!

Happy Easter! Your Pastor, Fr. Bob

This is Enrollment Sunday: Our young people are all excited about their upcoming 1st Holy Commun-ion and Confirmation. But today (April 28) we call them up during 9 & 12 noon Masses at to be EN-ROLLED in the Book of the Elect and pray over them with their families and Sponsors (if they can come!). If there are special gifts to be given to the Elect, we place them on the Altarcito and bless them.

ON PILGRIMAGE: WALKING WITH THE SAINTS AND MYS-TICS – from Avila (Spain) to Lourdes, France, to Chartres Cathedral via Paris, and on to Lisieux and more of Paris, this pilgrimage is an immersion in the spirituality of the mystics and a walk through the development of centuries of spiritual con-sciousness in Spain and France. This Pilgrimage is more like a retreat, NOT a tour, but a way of traveling faith that is a journey of a lifetime. We depart from Jacksonville on October 15, 2019, return on Oct 25.Cost: $4,590 for twin accommodation. See the bulletin board for details. I am extending this invitation to parish-ioners first for three weeks before opening it up to the diocese. I am taking only 23 people. I have been waiting 30 years to do this pilgrimage! Let me know if you can come with us.

Next week is Loaves and Fishes Sunday: please remember to

bring some non-perishable food items for our food pantry,

to feed the hungry, as part of your offertory gift for Christ.

You will be glad you did.

Estoy llevando solo 23 personas. ¡He esperado 30 años para hacer esta peregrinación! Déjeme saber si puede venir con nosotros.
