August 20th, 20th Sunday In Ordinary Time:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I have been with you almost 2 months now and have had time to begin to address many issues. I wish to share with you some things that are already in process. Saint Joseph Parish is very beautiful and has been home and mother to many over her history. But there is much to do so that she may continue to be home and mother to many in the years to come. As you know, three new priests have moved into the rectory. To our surprise there was much maintenance and repairs that were desperately needed, flooring was in disrepair, windows inoperable, major plumb-ing problems, and water damage in the walls and ceiling tiles falling down. Besides all of this the house was in desperate need of cleaning that unfortunately contributed to the rodent problems. The next issue is the air conditioning in the church. I understand that you have been told that it is insufficient to cool the church. Well, it is. It would be too costly to replace it with one that could actually cool the church, but we are doing what is possible to improve the circulation of cool air into the body of the church. The air conditioning in the rectory died two weeks ago. In order to have offices open and for the priests to live, we had to repair it immediately. Before moving in to Saint Joseph and in the initial days upon my arrival, it was apparent that we had a security problem. My first Sunday one of the homeless tried to break down the front door of the rectory. We have had to call the police on various evenings due to very suspi-cious activity with cars hiding behind our buildings. Without going into much more detail we must secure our property for the safety of all who come to Saint Joseph property. We have already have a plan to close the frontage of the prop-erty with nice brick-rod iron fencing. This will allow us to actually close off the property when all parish activity ends each night. We also need to secure the school area for all School, Religious Education, and all meetings that take place in the School Buildings and Msgr. English building. There is much to do, and it is doable. Once the work is done we will have to do on-going maintenance so that we can easily keep things functioning. This is where we all come in. Your on-going giving each Sunday allows us to have proper staffing and the where-with-all to properly maintain Saint Joseph, our home and our mother. This is what family must do, we take care of our home. I look forward to the years ahead.

Agosto 20, Vigesimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario:

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas, Tengo casi dos meses y he tenido tiempo para

empezar a resolver muchas cuestiones. Deseo compartir con ustedes algunas cosas que ya están en proceso. Parroquia de San José es muy bonita y ha sido el hogar y madre a muchos a lo largo de su historia. Pero hay mucho que hacer para que ella pueda seguir siendo su casa y su madre para muchos en los años venideros. Como ustedes saben, tres nuevos sacerdotes se han trasladado a la rectoría. Para nuestra sorpresa, había mucho mantenimiento y reparaciones que se necesitaban desesperadamente, el piso estaba en mal estado, ventanas sin funcionar, problemas de plomeria, y daños causados por el agua en las paredes y por dentro en el techo. Además de todo esto la casa estaba en necesidad deses-perada de limpieza que lamentablemente han contribuido a los problemas de ratones. La siguiente cuestión es el aire acondicionado en la iglesia. Entiendo que les han dicho que no es suficiente para enfriar la iglesia. Bueno, sí lo es. Sería demasiado costoso para sustituirlo por uno que realmente podría enfriar la iglesia, pero estamos haciendo lo posible para mejorar la circulación de aire fresco en el cuerpo de la iglesia. El aire acondicionado en la rectoría hace dos sema-nas dejo de funcionar. A fin de tener oficinas abiertas y a los sacerdotes un lugar donde vivir, hemos tenido que reparar de inmediato. Antes de mudarme a San José y en los primeros días tras mi llegada, era evidente que había un problema de seguridad. Mi primer domingo uno de los desamparados intentó romper la puerta de la rectoría. Hemos tenido que llamar a la policía en varias tardes debido a la actividad sospechosa con coches escondiéndose detrás de nuestros edificios. Sin entrar en mucho más detalle debemos asegurar nuestra propiedad para la seguridad de todos los que vienen a la propiedad de San José. Ya tenemos un plan para cerrar la fachada de la propiedad construir cerca de ladrillo y hierro esto permitira cercar la propiedad. Esto nos permitirá realmente cerrar la propiedad cuando toda la actividad parro-quial termina cada noche. También debemos asegurar la zona de la escuela y toda el area de la escuela, Educacion Religiosa, y todas las reuniones que tienen lugar en los edifi-cios escolares y en el salon Monseñor Ingles. Hay mucho que hacer, y es factible. Una vez que el trabajo esté termi-nado, tendremos que hacer un mantenimiento continuo de manera que fácilmente podamos mantener las cosas en funcionamiento. Aquí es donde todos venimos. Su ofrenda cada domingo nos permite tener una adecuada donación de personal y el don de todos para mantener adecuadamente la propiedad de la Iglesia San José nuestro hogar y nuestra madre. Esto es lo que debe hacer la familia, cuidamos de nuestra casa. Espero en los años venideros.

Teach kids when to say something

It is important to help children understand the difference between telling on others and sharing information that could help keep themselves or someone else safe. Teach children about secrets that are okay (a surprise birthday party), and secrets that are never okay (don’t tell mom or dad that...), and, perhaps most importantly, what to do if someone asks them to keep a bad secret.
