You may have already received an email invitation and have responded, so thank you. However, the database is not completely up-to-date so in the event you did not see an email and you have been a volunteer in any capacity, please consider yourself invited! A Message from fr. Jason Grisafi

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Last week I wrote to you about changes in protocol that were put forth by our diocese. I

want to take one of those and tie it in to a short reflection for this week. It was announced

that the dispensation from attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation will be

lifted starting the weekend of August 14th/15th, which coincides with the Solemnity of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We hope, therefore, to see a stronger presence of

parishioners at Mass. But even this positive change can, and should, be preceded by some

sort of spiritual preparation.

What I invite all to consider this week is the way in which the Summer months can provide

us with a type of retreat-like atmosphere so that we may undergo a type of spiritual

preparation. I especially invite families, who may see themselves with a bit more free time

as young people are off from school, to consider putting in some spiritual activities in the

midst of your Summer plans. For example, the Summer is a wonderful time to try and

make pilgrimage to different parish churches throughout Long Island. If you are visiting a

certain city, make sure to put a visit to the church on your itinerary.

Some people spend a lot of time gardening in the Summer: consider setting up a special

part of the garden this year with a statue of a saint to make a little prayer grotto. Then,

you've got a spot where you can pray outside - even with guests!

Some people have Summer reading lists. Why not use this as a chance to pick up one of

the works of the great Spiritual writers: St. Augustine, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Francis de

Sales, or St. Therese of Lisieux?

And, finally, with the change of seasons, let's be refreshed by the gift of God's mercy in

the Sacrament of Penance.

The Summer is a great time to relax and grow in our faith in a gentle, steady way. May we

all have such a blessed Summer.

In Christ,

fr. Jason

It is a secure on line program which allows donations to electronically go to the Parish.

You have the ability to adjust your settings for any amount or frequency.

* Weekly Budget: $20,000 Difference: ( - ) $4,332

*Note: We noticed that our calculation of our weekly goal was slightly off because it was based on 52 Sundays in the year. However, since Easter is always on a Sunday and is counted separately there was a need to adjust the goal from $19,615 to $20,000.

We have seen a significant (approximately 25%) jump in electronic donations through Faith Direct. A big thanks to all who have switched to electronic giving, or increased their giving amount!

If you would like to sign up for electronic giving, but need assistance, please call the parish office and we can help you sign up.

*Please note there are issues with the delivery of our mail from the Post Office which contributes to the fluctuations in our weekly collections.*

We Are the Body of Christ

The sin that crucified Jesus was not extraordinary sin. Every compromise that was there is here and every attitude that is here was there. But look at the consequence, and it fell on one who did not at all deserve it. So it always is. There is not a sin in this congregation today so secret that the one who is guilty can keep its consequences within the confines of his or her own life. Every sin that we commit builds a cross on which someone innocent will hang. When we hear Jesus say, “This is my body; this is my blood”, it faces us all with the fact of our own personal sin.

Once more, do not hear the word ‘salvation’ as though it were just a religious cliché. Make no mistake about it – all people everywhere are in need of and are searching for salvation of some sort. Why do we have schools? To save us from ignorance. Why do we have jobs? To save us from poverty. Why do we have hospitals? To save us from sickness and accident. Why do we have laws and government? To save us from anarchy. Why do we make friends? To save us from loneliness. All of life has something to do with salvation. It just happens that we don’t always call it that.

Thus the church is not totally different from other institutions, except that we are concerned with the ultimate issue of saving people from wrongness to rightness. Our message of salvation is aimed at that problem which lies at the root of all human problems. The Bible calls it sin. If you have a better word, use it; but be realistic enough to recognize our need to be saved from it. And the sacrifice of Jesus has for two-thousand years symbolized the meeting of that need. In him we see revealed not only God of law who condemns our sin, but a God of love who saves us from it.

There is an old story about a rebellious boy whom we will call Michael. He had disobeyed his father and, as punishment, had been sent to his room for the night without dinner. The evening passed; bed time came; and there was Michael in his room – obstinate and angry. Downstairs was the father. He too had not eaten; he was thinking about his son. Finally, he went upstairs, got in bed with his boy and said, “Michael, I cannot ignore it when you disobey me; but I can spend the night with you.” That finished Michael. He could rebel against the law, but he could not resist the love.

So the sacrifice of Jesus has spoken to you and me. We have made our bed of sin and, in a sense, must lie in it. But divine love has come to spend the night. Jesus broke bread, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body.” Then he handed them the cup and said, “This is my blood to be poured out on behalf of many.” In that sacrifice our sin is made graphically clear, but also our salvation is made gloriously possible.

Keep the “Body” Strong

Faith Formation Office hours are Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm. Registration for the 2021-2022 year has begun. Registration forms have been mailed to all the faith formation families. Please return your registration forms as soon as possible. We will resume classes in the building in the fall but families will have the option of working from home if it makes them feel more comfortable. Please check the back of the registration form for your options.

Great news… the faith formation classes are being cleaned and painted! This past year had its challenges due to the pandemic and we understand that it was difficult for some families to work with their children at home. We took the opportunity to have the rooms cleaned and painted while they were empty. Thank you to all the families that contributed to the Faith Formation Program this year. We couldn’t have done this without your support. Registration for the 2020-2021 is still open for those who missed this year. Families have until the end of June to register for this year so that they can complete the work over the summer and not fall behind for next year.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Here’s a great story about the power of prayer. It was posted in the bulletin at the parish of St. Mary in East Islip:

Assumption Council Helped Save a Baby

On April 17, 2021, twenty four Brothers from the Assumption Council 5252, Knights of Columbus conducted a “Stand for Life” Rosary at the Smithtown Planned Parenthood Center. As a result of their presence and prayers, a baby was saved. A young expectant woman, contemplating an abortion, saw the Knights praying and was so moved by their devotion, that she spoke to a lady who regularly stands and prays in front of the abortion clinic about her situation. She was sent to The LI Life Center and after seeing all the Center could do to help her, decided to have her baby. The young woman was deeply impressed by the sea of blue Council jackets who valued the lives of both her and the child she is carrying. We thank all the Brothers who were able to be there and those who weren’t but prayed the Rosary for Life for the unborn.

PERFECT BALANCE

As many positive signs point in the direction of our lives slowly leaving the cocoon in which we have found ourselves for many of the past 14 months, we begin to look back and see the things we were unable to do, the milestones we were unable to celebrate, the partings we were unable to adequately address. In most of these situations, there is

a degree of sadness because of the personal nature of the events which were denied us. Lacking in what was missed is the element of (though perhaps not the best phrasing on my part) entitlement, I suggest each of us has had such moments when we lamented what could not be.

Not all, however, grieved for themselves. Take, for example, the Little Sisters of the Poor.

The charism of this congregation is the caring for the dying by keeping vigil with them; maintaining a prayerful and supportive presence at their bedside; gracing the patient’s room with flowers and soft music; and availing hospitality carts for visiting family members. On the sacramental side, the Sister arrange for reception of the Eucharist, time for Reconciliation, and the Anointing of the Sick at the appropriate time. During the pandemic, however, such practices by the Poor Sisters were restricted by required isolation precautions, fewer Sisters being available due to illness, and the inaccessibility to the sacraments by their ministers.

None of us should dwell on the “what ifs” in our lives. However we viewed the happenings (or lack thereof) since COVID became a household word, we must understand God’s Providence allowed all of this to occur. How can we benefit? May our lack of celebrations allow us to better able to understand the true poverty of others? May the changes in our routines allow us to develop some talents which were hidden? May reduced social interactions permit us to reconnect with those we have neglected?

Picture the scales of justice as being perfectly even. The scales of our lives are the same. When something is removed, one side goes up; its replacement, however, brings it back to perfect balance. What the pandemic has eliminated in our lives has been replaced by something which has long been in God’s plan for each of us.
