Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King Page 3

Nov. 26th, Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today, the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is the last Sunday of the Church Year.

We rejoice in what is not yet, the full reign of God over all humanity in His second, Glorious coming at the end of time. This celebration was established in 1925 by Pope Pius IX to counteract several bad trends. To the world Jesus Christ was irrelevant: Religion was one thing; politics and the economy were completely disconnected from one’s faith. It was the time when totalitarian regimes were gaining ground. The Church wanted to show that Jesus Christ must be the King and center of social, political, as well as personal life. Indeed, we live in very similar times in which the world, even Catholics and other mainstream Christians, disconnect their faith from the rest of their lives. Today should be a celebration of the here and now of how we live with Christ reigning over our entire life. Our stewardship will manifest the kingship of Jesus in our lives, both in private and public. When we recognize that all that we have and are is pure blessing from God, we will care for what He has gifted us with by sharing our time, talent and treasure out of thankfulness to Christ our King. When we do this we wait in joyful hope of His kingdom to come and at the same time we build up His Kingdom here and now. It is one year into the Trump presidency, and the political atmosphere is completely upside down. There are many who are angry and many who are relieved; gas prices have risen here in California and the world is full of violence. In the midst of all this, one thing that will always remain, Jesus Christ is King of the universe. When we allow Jesus Christ to reign over our lives then we take part in extending God’s Kingdom here on earth. I believe that Saint Paul put it best in his words to us two Sundays ago – “We should live lives that are worthy of imitation. We should not act in a disorderly way among people and to work for what we have. In the midst of difficult situations we continue to be responsible so as not to make ourselves a burden to others, nor should we live in such a way that we willfully make others clean up after us. St. Paul even went so far as to say, “if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.” To be a member of God’s Kingdom here on earth it must be visible that Christ reigns over you. In other words, be responsible, worthy of imitation. Be willing to do not only the easy tasks but even the hard work that needs to be done. Speak well, finish your work, don’t complain if someone has an easier time that you do. When things don’t go your way, pick up your cross and follow Jesus – that is to say – suck it up and move on. Don’t give in to panic. If Jesus Christ reigns, then we live the same life no matter what comes in the morning. May Jesus Christ Reign, Fr. Steven Guitron

Steven Guitron

Neglect is a common form of abuse

Neglect is the most common form of child abuse. It is the failure to meet a child’s basic needs, including housing, food, clothing,

education, safety and access to health care. Neglect is most often characterized by acts of omission that aren’t easy to see. The signs of neglect are wide and varied, and may include: failure to develop and grow appropriately, or malnourishment, among infants; wearing inadequate clothing for the weather; and children who seem to be wholly responsible for the welfare of their siblings. If you know that any type of abuse is occurring, or if a child discloses to you, it is important to communicate these concerns to the appropriate authorities. Call your local law enforcement or child protective services department to report suspected abuse of any kind. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “The Oft-Forgotten Type of Abuse: Neglect,” visit: http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx or call (213) 637-7508.
