MASS SCHEDULE OPTIONS FOR ST. ANN AND ST. JAMES WORSHIP SITES As part of the ongoing process to unify our new parish community, we are asking our members to provide input on the mass times they would prefer at BOTH worship sites. Our ONE faith family is very lucky at the present time to have Fr. Mark, Fr. Bart, and Fr. David all assigned to our new parish. But as you know, the future is always uncertain, and we may at some point have only one priest and one music director who would need to run between both sites. Therefore, we have come up with schedule options that would allow for masses at both St. James and St. Ann locations if we were to have only one priest to serve both worship sites on any given day.

We have also suggested staggered times to provide opportunities so that those who miss a service at one site will still be able to attend a preferred mass at the other location. Additionally, the choices keep in mind those who don’t enjoy waking up early in the morning by offering a later service at one site, while still providing an early morning option at the other for those who prefer an earlier mass.

Please take a look at the choices below and indicate the mass times that you feel would work for you and your family at BOTH sites. We anticipate activating this new schedule by Labor Day weekend 2021, so we ask your fast and full participation in this process. Thank you in advance for your consid-eration and cooperation.

The deadline for responses is Sunday, August 22. Please drop your completed survey in the collection basket at any mass or at either parish office during the week, or visit

https://bit.ly/mass_times_options to fill out the Google Form.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Today we celebrate Mary’s life on earth as we join the heavenly hosts in celebrating her entrance into heaven. This is a good time for us to reflect on our devotion to Mary, particularly since there are still defamers of our faith who continue the false claim that Catholics worship Mary. We do not worship Mary, but we do venerate her in a man-ner greater than we venerate the saints. Let’s go back to the theological terminology of the devotion that Catholics are bound to give. First of all, we are called to adore God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Only God is to be adored and worshiped. We are to have no gods before our one God. We do not worship Mary. We do not worship the saints. We only worship God. We venerate the saints. By that we mean that we recognize their proximity to God in heav-en. We call upon them to intercede for us. The respect we have for all the saints is on this level of veneration. But there is one saint whose level of veneration is far greater than what we offer the other saints. This is the saint who is closest to God, Mary, the Immacu-lately Conceived One. The feast of Mary's Assumption says that there is one human being who already is fully and completely redeemed, saved body and soul. That person is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Since she gave birth to Him, and was intimately involved in the work of salva-tion, it is only right that she should share the full fruits of Jesus’ victory over death. The Assumption means that after her physical death, Mary's body was not allowed to remain on earth to corrupt but was caused by God to come into its transfigured and glorified state. Mary has passed beyond death, and the glory she now shares is the same glory we hope to enjoy also. By declaring that Mary was assumed “body and soul” into heaven, the Church is declaring that the whole person will be saved, and affirms the goodness of all material reality. The bodily glorification of Mary is the anticipation of the glorification that is the destiny of all. We can look at her now in glory and say, “That is how we will be one day.” Mary’s journey of faith is our journey too. What is her appeal? The answer is to be found in her human journey with God which is, in reality, our journey. What we go through today, Mary also went through, and we can easily identify with her as she goes through life in Scripture. When we first meet her, Mary is the object of an ugly rumor: She is pregnant without a husband. Her fiancé’, Joseph, is minded officially to deny her and any-thing about the pregnancy and put her at a distance. That she was innocent, invaded by the Spirit, was not believed. So right away, people down the ages who have suffered

from false rumors, who have had their reputations soiled, who have been misunderstood and maligned, unwed moth-ers, can identify with her. Then, too, there was her very human anxiety and fear. What's this all about anyway, this Mother of God busi-ness? "How can this be?" she asked the angel incredulous-ly. "What does God want? What about Joseph? How can this happen? How can I do this?" Confused and scared and full of questions, Mary is all those throughout the ages who have cried out, "How can I tackle this challenge? How can I survive? What does God want of me?” And finally, she cradles the broken dead body of her only Son in her arms and sobs uncontrollably, and there she is once more: every parent who has lost a child, any friend who has lost a friend, any classmate who has lost a class-mate through overdose or gunshot can identify with Mary of the Pieta. This is the woman—this pilgrim who savored the ups and downs of life—this is the ageless woman who has been given to us as a legacy. "Son, behold thy moth-er." And here we are today beholding her. Happy Feast Day of the Assumption. Amen.

Fr. Mark Kalema, Pastor
