Pastor’s Column Happy Mother's Day! & Around the Parish...

St. Brendan's Mothers Club and Men's Club united last weekend to sponsor the annual St, Brendan's Auction, which included an 80's theme and wonderful music, food, fellowship and just outright fun as they raised monies for our parish school! The people of our parish school commu-nity could be bottled and sold for the upbeat and happy outlook thy contribute as people of faith.

Deacon Andrew O'Leary will soon be Father Andrew O'Leary serving in the Diocese of Spokane un-der a St. Brendan son, Bishop Thomas A. Daly. How cool is that!! We wish him well as he advances in his vocation journey and are so very grateful that he served the people of St. Brendan so well as a transitional deacon. Deacon O'Leary promises to keep our St Brendan family ever in his heart by returning for a Mass of Thanksgiving to you, the people of St. Brendan who inspired him to contin-ue and achieve priestly ordination on May 21, 2022, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spo-kane, WA. Fr. Lourdu Mummadi is already serving in Spokane communicates regularly that he is happy and grateful as well for our St, Brendan's family of Faith.

Early results are in of the Synodal process and St. Brendan's is doing very well compared to like -sized parishes. That does not mean that we could not do better, but it is certainly encouraging to witness the energy of the parish as we return to healthier times and practices, including more gath-erings...

Please join our First Communion candidates and their families for their First Communion Mass on Saturday, May 14, 2022. I must confess that it has been so very encouraging to help them prepare and answer their questions. Please keep these wonderful young ones in your prayers...

Happy Mothers' Day!!

Fr. Mike

A FORETASTE OF PARADISE Throughout Easter Time, the Church rejoices with Jesus, risen from the dead. Our readings on this Fourth Sunday of Easter celebrate our instinct to come together in joy, worshiping in church. While private prayer nourishes our individual relationship with the Lord, community prayer is a foretaste of paradise. The book of Revelation depicts a “great multitude” worshiping God “day and night in his temple.” Our churches on Easter Sunday often reflect this happy multitude, filling the pews to bursting. Four Sun-days into the festive season, we are encouraged to keep praising God together. In the Acts of the Apostles, Paul and Barnabas demonstrate their instinct to worship with their faith community each Sabbath, dutifully taking their seats in the synagogue. In the Gospel, Jesus calls us his sheep and reminds us why coming together as a flock is so important: uniting in community, we imitate the unity of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Jews angrily reject Paul and Barna-bas’ preaching. They then turn their energies to the Gen-tiles (Acts 13:14, 43-52). Psalm — We are his people, the sheep of his flock (Psalm 100). Second Reading — John envisions a great white-robed multitude standing before the throne and before the Lamb. (Revelation 7:9, 14b-17). Gospel — My sheep hear my voice; they follow me. I give them eternal life (John 10:27-30). Honoring mothers is a Catholic tradition

Mother's Day has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States on the second Sunday of May since 1914. But Catholics have been celebrating a sort of mother's day since the first few centuries of the Church. The fourth Sunday of Lent, or Laetare Sunday, traditionally was a time to return to your mother church (home parish) and leave an o ering.

The "Madonna of the Magnificat" painted by Botticelli Filipepi in 1483 portrays Mary being crowned by two angels, while she writes the Magnificat and holds her Son, Jesus. The Magnificat, which is Latin for "My soul magnifies" is also known as the Canticle of Mary, which is the prayer of thanksgiving that Mary said after being greeted by her cousin Elizabeth at the Visitation. This feast is celebrated May 31.

Also known as Mothering Sunday, it naturally evolved into honoring your mother as well. And devotion to Mary, the mother of God and our spiritual mother, in the month of May gives this holiday depth for Catholics that goes far be-yond giving flowers or candy on Mother's Day.

"God, creator and lord of the universe, chose to put himself — tiny, needy and helpless — into the nurturing and watchful hands of a human mother. Since then, every act of mothering — both physical and spiritual — in every time and every corner of the world recollects Mary’s."

In Catholic tradition, the month of May is dedicated to Mary. Chosen by God above all other women, Mary's faith and obedience paved the way for the Incarnation. Her example teaches us faith, obedience, humility and most of all, how to love. According to St. Thomas of Villanova, "If in this world any creature ever loved God with whole heart, with whole soul, and with whole mind, she was the creature.”

At the foot of the cross, her heart broke for Jesus, yet she accepted God's will not only for her Son, but for herself in her new role as mother to us all. (John 19:25-27) As we honor our earthly mothers this month, let's honor our heavenly mother as well. Those devoted to her are always led to her Son. For her wise counsel tells us, "Do whatever he tells you." (John 2:5)

A Mother's Day Prayer

“I thank you, Creator of us all, for my mother. I thank you that she gave me life and nurtured me all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me to know you and to know Jesus and his ways. She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for others. She taught me that it was okay to cry and that I should always tell the truth. Bless her with the graces she needs and which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage, compassion, and peace. Bless her this day with your love." Amen.

Around the Parish & Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of San Francisco is accepting cryptocurrency! By Rod Linhares, Development Director The Archdiocese of San Francisco is accepting cryptocurrency – joining a growing but still relatively small group of nonprofits and church organizations who can process donations in the digital currency. The Archdiocese has partnered with The Giving Block (thegivingblock.com) to make this happen. The Giving Block is the leader in cryptocurrency donation solutions for nonprofit organizations. It provides a system for non-profits and charities to raise cryptocurrency dollars, a place for crypto donors to find nonprofits that accept crypto gifts, and an easy, secure way to make crypto donations. The Giving Block is the cryptocurrency donation solution trusted by over 1,000 faith-based organizations, non-profits, and universities. Among the organizations who use The Giving Block are the Catholic University of Ameri-ca, the American Cancer Society, Save the Children, and many others. A cryptocurrency (or “crypto”) is an electronic, peer-to-peer currency. This intangible asset is created using en-cryption algorithms and is circulated independently of a central monetary authority, like a bank or government. Consumers can convert traditional currencies, such as dollars or euros, into crypto, which can then be used to make investments, or even purchase goods or services. Most crypto exchanges use blockchain technology, allowing users to make safe and secure transactions, whether they are buying, selling or trading crypto. It is fast and easy to make a gift of cryptocurrency to your parish, a school, and/or ministry (such as the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal) of your choice. The process is extremely e cient, donor-focused, and secure, from the time you make your gift and automatically receive your tax receipt to when the parish, school, and/or ministry you se-lect receives your donation. The process of donating cryptocurrency to the Archdiocese is virtually identical to that of donating stock. Signifi-cantly, just as with the sale of stock, the Archdiocese sells a gift of cryptocurrency as soon as it is received. The Archdiocese does not hold the cryptocurrency. There is no speculation. Your cryptocurrency gift will have a great impact by furthering the mission of an Archdiocesan entity or ministry while reducing your tax-gain burden. When donating crypto, you receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the crypto, and you avoid the capital gains tax you would have incurred if you had sold the cryptocurrency and then made a donation. This often makes Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies (there are nearly 80 cryptocurrencies you can do-nate through The Giving Block) one of the most tax-e cient ways to support your favorite parish, school, and/or ministry. To donate cryptocurrency to an Archdiocesan ministry, school, parish, or the AAA, to learn more about doing so – or to learn about The Giving Block – please see thegivingblock.com. You will notice on the web site that our Arch-diocese is listed as The Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco. That is simply because The Giving Block re-quires organizations to be listed under their legal entity name. Please contact Rod Linhares, Director of Mission Advancement, at 415-614-5581 or [email protected] for more information, if you have questions, etc. Make a gift of cryptocurrency and change lives!
