The RSO identifies emerging technologies, applies and validates through rapid prototyping and deploys and scales the technology over time. Moving technology from one phase to another is an impressive feat that showcases the rapid deployment of emerging technologies the RSO can achieve. In 2019, the RSO moved from four projects to nineteen projects in the Apply phase, covering three additional focus areas, representing a 200% increase in apply projects.

Pitch Day Overview

Overview

The RSO successfully hosted its first Pitch dayin San Francisco, CA in November 2019. After acomprehensive six-month down-select process,companies were invited to present their solutions to the RSO team and 17 companies were awarded prototype contracts.

VertiPrime Encrypted private distributed ledger (blockchain) that contains critical manufacturing codes generated by CAD programs and connects via encrypted P2P protocol via an Internet-of-Things (IoT) array of 3D modern CNC machines.

Pandata Data Quality Method using AI/ML to automatically validate and qualify all signals/data that are collected to make maintenance, optimization, automation, and training more reliable.

C3.ai Scalable, production-ready commercial enterprise software Platform as a Services (PaaS) for developing and operating big data, predictive and prescriptive analytics, and IoT software applications including AI and machine learning-based analytics decision tools such as predictive mx and multi-domain command & control.

Automation & Robotics

IBC Materials Fast and environmentally friendly paint removal process based on IBC’s Plasma Electrolytic De-Paint (PEDP) technology that will provide significant time, cost and environmental savings.

Servenity Robotic automation; software product where bots mimic human interaction with systems and applications through existing user interfaces.

Priomatics Inc. Cloud based platform that collects and integrates data from individual pieces of equipment and other components within a facility.

Artificial Intelligence

Overview

Successful implementation of artificial intelligence will reduce unscheduled maintenance and facilitate a digital flight-line. Will streamline maintenance operations, optimize the supply chain, and improve asset generation and fleet awareness.

cbm+CBM+ enables more efficient weapon system sustainment by transforming the sustainment data we have into valuable knowledge about the condition of components on weapon systems. This new knowledge enables USAF maintenance organizations to optimize maintenance plans and ensure that asset health can meet mission needs.

Accomplishments

• Fielded CBM+ to over 700 aircraft in USAF fleet

• Trained 66 maintenance units on CBM+

• Deployed 178 (and growing) algorithms

• Removed 105 parts before they failed

• 5,000 hours of troubleshooting time saved

• Began evaluation on more than 179 parts for premature failure

• Launched CBM+ on three new platforms – F-15, B-52, and C-17

AGILE MANUFACTURING

Overview

The RSO is working to identify, develop, transition, and scale AM technology for the advancement of the Sustainment enterprise. The AM PMO will leverage mature, new, and emerging AM technology to reduce O&S costs and improve readiness.

Data and Digital Environments

Overview

Automated data collection and enabling technologies will increase personnel productivity. A standard data repository with built-in analytic tools can be used to develop automated aircraft information for flight-line personnel.

• Future efforts include data quality controls, text data mining for more robust data sets, and creating relationships between disparate databases

Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality

Overview

AR/VR technologies accelerate training and proficiency levels of sustainment workforce. The technology allows maintenance personnel to quickly view, assess, and advise to resolve problems and reduce flight line waiting and response times.

The User’s Summit is an event where the USAFcommunity can come together and share progress,brainstorm new paths forward and celebratesuccesses. This event builds on past CBM+Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) held in 2019and 2018.

Advanced Manufacturing OlympicsNovember 16-19, 2020 | Salt Lake City, Utah

The Air Force’s inaugural Advanced Manufacturing Olympics Event will feature technical challenges focused on showcasing technology advancements in manufacturing, prominent keynote speakers, breakout sessions, networking opportunities, and much more.

Vice Chiefs Challenge – Automation

The Vice Chiefs Challenge (VCC) is in support of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force vision, a call to Airmen, industry, and academia to generate innovative solutions to save Airmen time. VCC 2020 will allow Airmen to pitch ideas and solve problems related to automation.
