100 Years of the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

During the Month of April, The Owensboro Museum of Sci-

ence and History is proud to host Images of Liberty: 100 Years of the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island.

Towering over New York harbor for over one hundred years, the Statue of Liberty is a marvel of engineering technique and con-struction skill and one of the most powerful symbols of liberty in the world.

The Statue of Liberty became closely associ-ated with immigration after the opening of nearby Ellis Island in 1892. Today, over one hundred million Americans can trace their

heritage to the seventeen million immigrants who entered America through Ellis Island before its closing in 1954.

In 1986, the statue was showing serious signs of deteriora-tion. A successful cam-paign was conducted to restore this symbol of liberty and freedom. This exhibit presents rare images of “Lady Liberty” and includes photo-graphs of her initial construction in France, the immigration period, and her restoration.

This exhibit is made possible through The Kentucky Historical Society.

Where can one go to find a group of Kindergarteners working at an

automobile assembly line? Why, the Owensboro Museum of Science and History of course! It’s all a part of The World We Create, the museum’s latest traveling exhibition from The Louisville Science Center!

Come and explore how human cre-ativity solves problems and advances technology as applied science, technol-ogy and engineering come to life. You can visit three distinct zones: The Transit Hub, Tech Works, and The Construction Zone and discover what each has to offer.

Operate a working construction crane. Defy gravity by helping build a seven foot archway. March’s Super Science

Saturday at the Owensboro

Museum of Science and

History featured Channel 14

WFIE Chief Meteorologist Jeff

Lyons, presenting “Weather

Why’s.”

Jeff discussed the art and sci-

ence of weather forecasting,

and what things are important

to remember in a weather

emergency. Jeff showed us

how he uses technology in

presenting his forecasts, and

provided weather maps on

which kids used crayons and

markers to create their own

forecasts.

Upcoming Super Science Saturdays will feature

Jerry Garner, with NASA’s Solar System Ambassador

program, a public outreach program, which commu-

nicates the excitement of space exploration missions

and information about recent discoveries. The Jet Pro-

pulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, a lead research

and development center sponsors the Solar System

Ambassador Program for the National Aeronautics and

Space Administration (NASA).

In May, join us for the

Mini-Agra Eco Camp,

presented by the Mount Saint

Joseph Conference and Retreat

Center, on May 9th.

Keep an eye on the Owensboro

Museum of Science and Histo-

ry’s website for announcements

on upcoming Super Science Saturday events!

When DINOSAURS

Roamed the Earth

On Sunday, March

29th OMSH will as-

sist in the launching

of the newly released

book, DINOSAUR

published by Little,

Brown and Company.

Your journey back to prehistoric times

will bring you face-to-face with the

larger than life monsters who ruled the

planet. Imagine turning a corner in the

wild and looking up at these colossal

creatures, some more than 50 feet tall

and weighing more than 80 tons.

The book is an interactive dream for

children and a delight for adults. It’s

fashioned along the lines of an old scrap-

book with its multi-layers and cards with

different flaps and folds. Many pages

will remind you of the inside of a deco-

rated old steamer trunk. Drawings of Di-

nosaurs and other prehistoric animal fill

the books pages. Other interesting items

include Dinosaur stamps and pages of

journals with scientist’s observations.

To celebrate the launch all those

who attend will participate in fashion-

ing a Dino hat to suit their taste, create

a one-of-a-kind Dino art project and

much, much more! There will also be

a special Dino fossil dig, maybe you’ll

find a keepsake to take home. Dinosaur

enthusiasts beware this is a book you will

have to own!

All festivities will be from 2:00 – 4:00

p.m. Sunday, March 29th.
