In a fundraiser for WNIN Public Television, Evans-ville was pleased to host

Celtic Woman in its final dress rehearsal perfor-mance before embarking on its 2009 “Isle of Hope” world tour. For those of you left

wondering, Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprising five Irish female art-ists; vocalists Lynn Hillary, Chloë Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and fiddler Máiré-ad Nesbitt. The group’s repertoire ranges from Irish standards to classical favorites and contemporary hits. To date, the group has released four albums, Celtic Woman, Celtic Woman: A Christmas Celebration, Celtic Woman: A New Journey and Celtic Woman: The Greatest Journey and have undertaken a number of world tours. Not just a concert, the mood is set with the background of a phenomenal sound and light show. You find yourself transported to another place, another time as the angelic sopranos take turns bathing you with their pure, graceful and articulate ballads ranging from charming and whimsi-cal, to haunting and soul stirring. Exquisite-ly designed gowns by Irish designer Synan O’Mahoney adorn the performance.

An integral component to the en-semble is the astounding fiddler, Mairead Nesbitt, who in herself personifies the vi-sion of Irish song and dance. She com-mands the fiddle in true Irish style in the midst of spirited and animated frolic. Al-most nymph-like, with long luminous locks and gown in swirling motion, she parades and creates an atmosphere of flirtation and tantalization. The result is a dynamic show of dance and fiddling. One can only guess as to whether her steps are choreo-graphed. One thing for sure, you’ll not take your eyes off her lest you miss a step your-self. The percussion is extraordinary. Using a variety of drums it manages to get underneath the music, hold it, and partake in the mesmerizing hypnosis that is going on within the audience. Celtic Woman has been referred to as “Riverdance for the voice.” Almost magical, it is truly spellbinding. Along with its 19 member ensemble, the 2009 “Isle of Hope” tour will dazzle the eye, enchant the ear and stimulate both mind and heart. For more information on Celtic Woman and their upcoming US tour, visit www.celtic-woman.com.

Ready for some music that’s finger-pickin’ good? Then get yourself to the 8th Annual Bluegrass Returns to its Roots Festival in Owensboro KY.

The festival will be held April 2-4 at River Park Center, and quite a festival it will be! The RiverPark Center hosted The International Blue-grass Music Association’s Annual Award Show from 1992 to 1995, so it is a very fitting and natural setting for the Bluegrass festival. 1,500 people per show. And to add to the nostalgia of the event, the Riv-erPark Center is adjacent to the International Bluegrass Music Museum. Festival attendees can enjoy the museum and then walk up the steps to the performing arts hall to see some of the hottest pickers and singers in Bluegrass today. In addition to the shows, attend-ees can also enjoy a variety of extras, spe-cial packages and tours in-cluding IBMM tours, IBMM films presenta-tions, bus tours to Rosine, KY, (Bill Monroe’s c h i l d h o o d home), lunches and/or dinner at the world-famous Moon-light Bar B-Q, artist meet-and-greets, and other exciting events. This year’s festival equals the top awards shows, with the Grammy, IBMA, and SPBGMA award-winning talent scheduled to per-form. Artists include: Dailey and Vincent (2008 winner of 6 IBMA awards, including Entertainer of the Year), Dale Ann Bradley (the reigning 2008 IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year), Steep Canyon Rangers (nominated IBMA emerging artist of the Year),Grammy-nominated J.D. Crowe and the New South, Michael Cleveland and Flamekeepers, Bradley Walk-er, Lonesome River Band, and The Josh Williams Band. More special guests and events will be announced. Moonlite Bar-B-Q is world-famous for not only the tantalizing

blend of spices that make up a legendary barbeque sauce but also the distinctive hick-ory flavor that permeates its quality meat. Slow-cooked in custom-built hickory fired pits, even President Clinton visited

the restaurant to sample the sauce on his way through Owensboro. It is no secret that Moon-lite’s renowned barbecue is worth taking time out of running the country but did you know that Moonlite also offers an extensive catering menu that stretches far beyond BBQ? We began our tasting with beef ten-derloin and roasted pork tenderloin that was smoked on the hickory pits. Full of robust flavor, it all but melted in our mouths. According to the

Moonlite catering staff, these are favorites when choosing a menu for special occasions. We also sampled a thick, juicy medium-rare cut of prime rib. Meticulously aged, then slow-roasted to seal in the sa-vory beef flavor and tenderness, Moonlite’s prime rib is served with a tempting au jus to add a splash of savor to the meat. If red meat seems too heavy for your party, try the lemon chicken parmesan. A sautéed boneless breast of chick-en, baked in white wine and lemon cream sauce and topped with fresh mushrooms, this dish will give your guests a lighter alternative without sacrificing flavor. After you choose your meat, Moonlite catering offers a

plethora of gourmet sides that are far from baked beans and potato salad. To ac-company most of the meat dishes, a starch side pairs nicely. Moonlite offers several signature sides including twice baked potatoes, mashed red new potatoes and a baked mac-aroni and cheese. Next, we sampled the marinated as-paragus spears, hearts of palm and artichoke hearts. It lent a perfect lightness to the heavier dishes. Moonlite’s lunches and din-ners add a defining touch to your affair but the appetizers and desserts will definitely be the icing on the cake! Moonlite prepares an as-sortment of appetizers that are as pleasing to the eye as they are the palate. What-ever your theme, Moonlite can create a food display that doubles as decoration. Recently, the catering team created an island-themed fruit, cheese and hickory smoked salmon display that made guests feel as if they

had stepped into the tropics. At another event, fruit and cheese were placed atop authentic bourbon barrels to create a rustic distillery feel. Fresh honeydew, cantaloupe, pineapple, kiwi, grapes and strawberries along with ten differ-ent cheeses including baby Swiss, Colby, brie, smoked Gouda and pepper jack refresh the pal-ate and enhance the appearance of your event. Finally, to top off your meal, choose from a variety of homemade desserts including frothy coconut pie, rich and creamy chocolate pie, red velvet cake and my favorite – banana cream pie. With thick pudding, ripe bananas, whipped cream and a buttery crust, the banana cream pie ended our meal on a sweet note. When you choose Moonlite catering for your event, you can feature world-famous BBQ or choose from a never-ending list of op-tions as you can request whatever your heart desires. Moonlite’s experienced, professional staff has catered events as small as intimate luncheons up to parties of 10,000 including the annual Maker’s Mark Derby party in Louisville, KY, and various local galas and balls. Bar-tending services are also available. Visit www.moonlite.com for a price list and to see more of the options Moonlite offers. To schedule an appointment call Jeanie Heath or Mike Clark at 270-684-8143.

Eric Duke Drums & Percus-sion(Modern Country, Dishonest John, Dennis and The Masters of The Universe)

Drums: Mapex Pro M SeriesCymbals: Stagg (EMD)

Sticks: Zildjian Heavy JazzCongas and Bongos: Verve

Having played music in some format or an-other for the last 38 years (yeah count ‘em), I can honestly say that I have had my hands on just about every drum or cymbal ever made - Ludwig, Tama, Pearl, Rogers - but I could never quite achieve the sound that I was hearing in my head until I got a Mapex kit.

Mine are the Pro M series - all maple shells in tobacco burst fi nish. Gorgeous! For cymbals I use Stagg. Having again played about every cymbal on the planet - Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, Wuhan - I have chosen to play Stagg Cymbals because in side by side comparisons to every Avedis Zildjian and Sabian on the wall at Moore Music, they were by far the best sound-ing, AND most cost effective. I am constantly experimenting with sticks, but right now I’m liking Zildjian Heavy Jazz. My congas and bongos are Verve.

Matt Camp Calling Corners

My main guitars are a custom shop silver sparkle Epiphone Les Paul (loaded with Tone Pros and Seymour Duncan) and a Larrivee LV09E acoustic. I have played every acous-tic out there and I knew this one the one as soon as I picked it up! I also sometimes use a beautiful Gibson ES335 electric for the more

quiet stuff that needs those singing notes and nuances. My rig includes a Line 6 Flextone III amp with a longboard foot controller for ac-cess to tons of presets and “stompbox” type control for all the on-board digital effects in the amp. I keep a BBE Sonic Maximizer in the

effects loop to make it absolutely punch and sparkle. I am also currently having a celestion loaded custom extension cabinet built for the rig. My chain between the guitar and amp usually includes a Boss PQ4 Parametric EQ, a Roctron Banshee Talkbox (I’m bringing it back!),and an Electro Harmonix Small Stone Phase Shifter. I’ve recently added an EBOW (elec-tric bow) to my arsenal too. I love gadgets! Come check us out at our upcoming local gigs at Woody’s and Fast Eddy’s and see what you think of my set-up in person!

When I was shop-

ping for my honeymoon, I purchased a slew of formal dresses to “wear out.” On the night

our swanky hotel served a surf and turf dinner, I of course was incredibly sick and so my dresses have quietly taken their place in the back of my closet – next to the Halloween costumes and bridesmaids attire. Every woman stashes her reserve of gorgeous gowns in the back of the closet in hopes that she will one day be able to play princess. On March 7, the Junior League of Owensboro is hosting their annual Charity Ball – the perfect occasion for all the ladies out there to scour the murky depths of their closets and dig out the bedazzled beauties they knew they would wear someday, or seize the opportunity to spend an afternoon with Daddy’s plastic. This year’s theme is Everything Kentucky; a tribute to well… everything that is Kentucky! Catered by Moonlight BBQ, the Patron’s Party – a complete 4-course dinner – will begin at 6:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., back by popular demand, the Velvet Bombers with special guest Lorne Brown will perform favorites from the Sixties to today. “Charity Ball is really community event. It gives Ow-ensboro the opportunity to dress to the nines, go to a great party and raise money for charity. It benefits Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library which mails a brand new, age appropriate book each month to children under five in the community. It also benefits Kids in the Kitchen which teaches kids healthy eating habits and CASA which appoints court advocates for children,” says Libby Johnson. Tickets are $60 for the ball only and $115 for the Patron’s Party and the Ball and must be purchased prior to the event. Contact Ms. Libby Johnson at [email protected] for tickets and be sure to visit www.juniorleagueofowensboro.com for more about Owens-boro’s Junior League.

March is an excit-ing month at two of our local mu-

seums. The Owensboro Museum of Science and History is opening its new exhibit – The World We Create and the Owens-boro Museum of Fine Art

is opening its thought-provoking new exhibit – The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century. Each of these exhibits will be in town for several months, so you have plenty of time to check them out. The Owensboro Museum of Sci-ence and History had a successful grand opening on February 14 for its newest exhib-it, The World We Create. This unique exhibit is on loan from the Louisville Science Center and promises to make you contemplate sci-ence in all new way. Open through August 23, you have no excuse to miss this enlighten-ing display! This interactive exhibit will demon-strate how human creativity can problems solve through science. There will be three “hubs” of sorts – the Transit hub, Tech Works, and the Construction Zone. Each hub will feature fun interactive activities that require team work to complete. One activity is to structure a crane, another is to build a seven-foot archway, but you must have partners in order to complete these tasks. Another area shows how gears work, while the third demonstrates Aero Dy-namics as you attempt to streamline race cars. There is also an assembly line section which features how machines build cars. Your team can even participate in a mock production line to build your own vehicle! Not only will you find The World We Create in the main gallery, but you will also find the Museum’s two permanent exhibits: SpeedZeum and Encounter, the Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center, and the Playzeum on the floors above. The Owensboro Museum of Science and History is open seven days a week. Admission to the Museum of Sci-ence and History is $3 per person and free to museum members. For more information on any of these exhibits, visit www.owensboromu-

seum.com. Opening in March, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art presents its newest exhibit The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century. This uniquely beautiful exhibit, which spotlights 56 artists, is the first traveling display to feature Realism in detail. What defines Realism? Most artists use the following rule of thumb when trying to convey its components: “If you can recognize a par-ticular person, or identify a specific object or landscape view from a painting, it’s Realism.” Photography, computer-enhanced images, and pre-mixed paints are just a few of the new mediums that have changed the creative process for artists and allow them to express themselves in new ways. This exhibit com-pares and contrasts new contemporary paint-ings with similar historical paintings created by such greats as Da Vinci, Vermeer, Memling and Dali. There is so much beauty and detail involved in The New Reality: The Frontier of Realism in the 21st Century that my description can in no way detail what an inspiring treat this display will be – you must go and experience it for yourself. The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is open daily. For more information, visit www.omfa.us.

What began in 2007 as the one dimensional brainchild of Eric Graham, Nathan Johnson, and John Byrne has since blossomed into a

dynamic—if unpolished—project known as Suspect Stereo. Joining the original bassist/guitarist (Graham), drummer (Johnson), and keyboardist/vocalist (Byrne), are newfound vocalist Jake Westerfield, and bassist/gui-tarist/bringer of funk Jake Lee. Despite the fact that individual roles in the band are poorly defined from the vantage of an outsider, it is clear

that the alternative/indie five piece have developed some sense of direc-tion in the past two years. Although much of their material are covers from such artists as Pearl Jam, the Cure, White Stripes, and Greenday, their original pieces are strongly reminiscent of early Murder By Death fused with a bluesy, funk sound accentuated by some exceptional string-work.

The addition of John Byrne on keys gives much of their material a de-cidedly eclec-tic feel that is somewhat unique in the region. This, paired with two unique vocalists and g u i t a r i s t s , lends the band a multi-

dimensional tonality that helps break the monotony of a performance dominated by cover songs and gives them a slight, but desperately needed edge over other coverbands. Although Suspect Stereo is relatively inexperienced as a live band, their debut gig is scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day at Milligan’s Lounge. Their original song, “Trees Sway” was featured in Verite Pic-tures’ Hallows Eve which was filmed entirely in Owensboro. What sets Suspect Stereo apart from other coverbands in the region, however, is not so much their original work but their attitude to-wards the local scene. The band does not perform cover songs as a pref-erence, but out of necessity. According to Westerfield, the unfortunate truth is that “the majority [of venue patrons] want to hear mainstream songs that they know.” Echoing this almost defeatist sentiment is Johnson who is convinced that “in order to grow, a band has to do a lot of covers.” For this reason, Suspect Stereo is attempting to garner a fan base through their cover work which, they hope, will inherently draw listeners to their original music. Although performing original music in this region is a daunting task, Suspect Stereo is a group of likeminded individuals cemented to-gether by “common personalities” and the familial bonds that result from long practices and a mutual drive to create music. Of his band family, self-proclaimed funk machine Jake Lee says “It’s a lot less dysfunctional than my real one…” Although their direction currently seems unclear, there is no doubt that Suspect Stereo will continue to play music and may even prove to be the region’s dark horse gig band.

cd reviewsRudy Adrian

Desert Realms CD (Lotuspike)

Inspired by the vast, expansive landscapes of the American Southwest (specifi cally Arches and Canyons National Parks in Utah), New Zealand-based ambient/elec-tronic composer Adrian has crafted a se-rene and stately set of audio soundtracks. The opening tracks depict exactly as they

imply – “Saguaro Silhouette,” “Pathway,” or “Circling Hawk” are all richly evoca-tive travelogues of a natural eden. “Sub-terranean River” echoes the ebb and fl ow (and stillness) of the submerged world, whereas ‘Cloudburst’ brings the life-affi rming rains. Adrian’s sonorous strings and reverberations are accent-ed in spots by Nick Prosser’s Baroque fl ute, which brings a primitive sense of humanity to the pristine environments. Desert Realms is exactly what the title implies - a set of beautiful, magnifi cent, and primal soundscapes with a hint of mystery and shadow - ideal for unwinding with or for creating a unique mood to your surroundings. Wonderful work and worth multiple listens. - Todd Zachritz • Rating: 3

The Fray Self-Titled

(Sony Music)www.thefray.net

There are very few bands that evoke such an emotional response from a lis-tener as the Denver based band The Fray. Their sophomore effort on Epic records has proven to stand its own ground among their double platinum de-but album. The Fray was formed in 2002

by two schoolmates Isaac Slade and Joe King. Their signature sound of sweeping piano composition, melancholy to inspiring lyrics, and Slade’s hallowed voice construct a musical landscape that is easy to get lost in. One of the albums best aspects is the accessibility to a new listener while still being able to fi rmly grasp the attention of the seasoned listener. There is a notable improvement in the rhythm and lead guitar. The rhythm guitarist Dave Welsh seems to tweak his playing to better compliment the piano and to add his own layer to each song. King on lead guitar breaks from the norm and ends “Ungodly Hour” with a bittersweet solo/fi ll that concisely seals the song. The standouts on the album are “Abso-lute,” “Say When,” “Enough for Now,” and “Ungodly Hour.” The single “You Found Me” is also very strong lyrically and musically but I can see it be-ing played out. Let’s hope Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t get a hold of it. –Nick Durcholz • Rating: 3.9

Wire Object 47 CD

(Pink Flag/Mute)Being their 47th re-lease over the past 30+ years, British punk/avante rock act Wire haven’t lost sight of the fi re, brevity, in-tegrity, and sense of experimentation that made their early works like ‘Pink Flag’ or ‘Chairs Missing’ so essential (and infl uential). On ‘Object 47’, original members Colin Newman and Graham Lewis (joined by drummer Robert Grey) recon-vene to produce a short (9 songs in 35 minutes) sharp shot of punchy songs that are both melodic and intelligent. The opener, ‘One Of Us’ is instantly likeable and catchy, and easily the most accessible cut here. ‘Circumspect’ is a bass-heavy mid-tempo slice of taut and angular post-punk, and ‘Mekon Headman’ is droney and heavy without fi tting into any par-ticular genre. ‘Patient Flees’ (great title) is woozy and almost lulling. Strong songwriting, clear (but not sterile) production, and impeccable presentation - absolutely top-notch in every way. Fans of the band’s earlier proto-punk, proto-industrial works will no doubt fi nd this one more than agreeable. The fi nal track, ‘All Fours’, even enlists the considerable talents of Page Hamilton (Band Of Susans, Helmet) for ‘feedback storm’. It’s a powerful, driving, and fi tting conclusion to the album. I look forward to more work from this venerable band and their myriad side projects. - Todd Zachritz • Rating: 4

and balances the music. The lyrics however, as the album progresses get increasingly more simple and vague but there are some lyrical gems spread without. There is something left to be desired in the lyrics department for the Ettes. That being said the music is extremely ener-getic and seems to provoke one to dance. The bass riffs are blistering, distorted fun. The drumming is steady and catchy but again leaves something to be desired. It is painfully average. Overall I think the Ettes have at least begun to fashion their own sound musically and I could possibly see that niche eventually becoming a large crevasse. The do have a lot of potential but personally I see a lot of room for improvement. For example, they should implement a variety in the beats and in the lyrics. The standouts on the album are “I Get Mine”, “Chilled Hidebound Hearts”, “To Arms”, “I Heard Tell”, and “Where your Loyalties Lie”. This last track has an entrancing and melodic sound that needs to be further explored. –Nick Durcholz • Rating: 3.1

March 3rdAustralia (20th Century Fox)

The cinematic equivalent of Sominex! Make no mistake. I am a huge Baz Luhrmann fan. His movie-musical masterpiece Moulin Rouge is one of my fa-vorite movies of this decade. It’s a brilliant blend of screenwriting, directing, editing, acting and singing. Simply put, it’s one of the most original and engaging movies in the history of cinema. And he follows it up with THIS! Australia! This is Luhrmann’s attempt at those sweeping romantic epics of the late 1930’s and

40’s. Basically, it’s Gone with the Wind with kangaroos! Appropriately, I wanted to crawl inside a marsupial pouch and sleep for the 2 hour and 45 minute run time. GRADE: C

March 10thThe Boy in the Striped Pajamas (Miramax)

Well, apparently my column does no good. I raved about this fi lm and fully expected you guys to fl ock to the local theatres to witness what I consider to be the best fi lm of 2008. Yet, when it made its rounds locally it lasted about as long as a bout of contact dermatitis. So here’s your chance to fi nally experience Mark Herman’s story of a German boy who befriends a young prisoner at a concentration camp his Nazi father operates. And you can see it at your own leisure without all the trappings of modern-day cinema: the chatty teenagers seated next to you who think you’ve paid good money to hear them talk on their cell phones, that Three Doors Down commercial for the National Guard (love the National Guard, but that song has to go), or any movie trailer involving Tyler Perry or his obnoxious cross-dressing alter-ego, Madea. In summation, RENT THIS MOVIE! GRADE: A

March 10thCadillac Records (Sony Pictures)

The problem with Darnell Martin’s (Their Eyes Were Watching God, Sus-pect) ode to Chess Records is that it’s overloaded with label mates. See, Chess Records was home to Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Little Walter (Columbus Short), Howlin’ Wolf (Eamonn Walker), Chuck Berry (Mos Def), and Etta James (Beyonce). Martin could have made fi ve separate movies here. After all, everyone I just mentioned had careers impressive enough to land them in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. But when you throw them all into the same movie, there are too many stories to tell and not enough time to tell them. But Cadillac Records isn’t a total wash. There are some fi erce musical performances and, to no one’s surprise, it’s Beyonce who hits all the right notes. But it’s not her performance of At Last that’s the signature piece here. Watch the pop diva lay into Etta’s All I Could Do Was Cry and you’ll see that Beyonce is “irreplaceable.” GRADE: C+

March 10thHappy-Go-Lucky (Miramax)

The cinematic equivalent of a migraine that makes you hurt so badly you want to run head-fi rst into a brick wall or wood chipper. It seemed actress Sally Hawkins was destined to snag an Academy Award nomination for her role as the perpetually happy (and irritating) Poppy. She won a handful of major critics’ awards and snagged a Golden Globe trophy for Best Ac-

tress in a Musical or Comedy. But she was ignored by the Oscars. Some thought this was a travesty. I like to think it’s the result of the diligence of the cynics on my prayer tree. I get what writer/director Mike Leigh was going for here. I understand that I’m supposed to feel guilty that I wish this cheery, optimistic North London lass would get plowed by a double-decker bus. But I don’t. In fact, it’s that very thought that makes ME happy-go-lucky. GRADE: C-

March 17thTwilight (Summit Entertainment)

It didn’t take an I.Q. to realize that teenagers were going to make this big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s novel a gigantic hit (it grossed nearly two hundred million dollars). But is it possible for me (or other adults I know, for that matter) to have truly enjoyed a movie about adoles-cents with fangs? Well, it may not be possible, but I did. And here’s why. For me, the notion of a vampire has always seemed ridiculous (kinda like the thought of a Whitney Houston comeback). But Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) seem to agree. This movie works best when it plays vampirism for laughs. Check out the scene in which Edward (Robert Pattinson) takes Bella (Kristen Stewart) home to meet his parents. It’s like Salem’s Lot meets Family Ties. GRADE: B-

March 24thQuantum of Solace (Sony Pictures)

Quick! Someone tell James Bond that a group of covert terrorists are target-ing the water supply in Bolivia. Quick! Someone tell the Bolivians that they can just drink Aqua-fi na! I said when Casino Royale was released that it was, hands-down, the best James Bond movie ever made and that Daniel Craig was the best James Bond ever. Both statements remain true. While Craig still smolders as everyone’s favorite womanizing secret agent man, Quantum of Solace fi zzles. While villain Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) seems dastardly enough, I’m still not really sure what the hell he’s doing. I’m sorry, but tainting the water supply in a tiny South American country seems like small potatoes. Come on, Dominic! If you want to really piss off James Bond, blow up England. Or a Victoria’s Secret. GRADE: C+

March 6th Watchmen (Warner Brothers)

Just what the world needs. Another ac-tion fl ick featuring superheroes that originated in graphic novels. This movie, from ambitious direc-tor Zack Snyder, has one thing going for it. Ambitious director Zack Snyder. Though I didn’t recommend his movie 300, I did acknowledge its stunning and ground-breaking visual style. Rest assured. Watch-men is going to sport some awesome spe-cial effects and visu-als. Yes. Watchmen may bore us to tears, but the movie will still look good through those tears.

March 13thRace to Witch Mountain (Buena Vista)

I remember escaping to Witch Mountain as a child back in 1975. Well, Alexander Key’s characters are back in this, the latest big-screen adaptation of his story about two mysterious kids with some pretty awesome supernatural powers. This time out, Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as “The Rock.” – you know, back when he wore a unitard) joins in the action, though I’m not convinced that’s a good thing. Look! I could go on for days about his work in The Game Plan, Doom and Get Smart. But let’s get down to the serious business at hand. Anyone else think he looks dead-up like tennis commentator Mary Carillo?

March 20thDuplicity (Universal)

The last time Julia Roberts and Clive Owen shared screen time they did it in Mike Nichols’ Closer, a brutally honest relationship drama that, for me, was the best movie of 2004. The crime caper Duplicity promises much lighter fare. Here, Roberts and Owen play corporate spies (with a steamy, yet rocky past) who team up again to swindle their high-powered corporate exec bosses.

Though he didn’t need more star power, writer/director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) rounded up some more anyway. Joining Rob-erts and Owen in the cast . . . Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson, who scored an Academy Award nomination for his own work in Michael Clayton.

March 20thKnowing (Summit Entertainment)

There’s some really good news and some really bad news about Alex Proyas’ (I, Robot) new doomsday thriller. First, the good news. The premise is freakin’ awesome. A teacher opens a time capsule that contains dire predictions about the fate of the world and some of them have already come true and others seem to be ready to. The bad news . . . Nicolas Cage plays that teacher. In case you haven’t

noticed, Nicolas Cage has given the exact same performance in all these movies: Bangkok Dangerous, Ghost Rider, The Wicker Man, Next, 8MM, Gone in Sixty Seconds, etc. What else do those movies have in common? THEY ALL SUCKED!

March 27thMonsters vs. Aliens (Paramount/DreamWorks)

I

can hear the cash registers ringing. You don’t need Nicolas’ Cage’s time capsule to predict this. Monsters vs. Aliens will be the fi rst blockbuster of 2009. Reese Witherspoon voices the ani-mated Susan Murphy, who gets clobbered by a meteorite from outer space and gets turned into a towering monster named Gi-normica. She’s then recruited by a secret government agency to join other “monsters” in fi ghting the aliens and saving the world. In 2008, Wall-E restored my faith in animation and I have high hopes that this will deepen that faith. Sidebar. How evangelical did I just sound? Please.
