Dear Supporters & Friends,
In 2013, we launched our 10-year action plan to protect North Carolina’s environment. It is an ambitious plan that puts us on the
path of stopping environmental rollbacks while also making progress to protect our state for generations. While much work remains, we are proud of what we accomplished in 12 short months. Last year, we:
1. Grew. We more than tripled the size of our Public Alert network and now reach over 70,000 activists. We also grew our Facebook page to over 60,000 followers.
2. Started to make the environment a top issue for North Carolinians. We created a comprehensive communications plan, hired our first Communications Director, and earned a growing drumbeat of media attention on our issues.
3. Found new leaders. Working with our affiliates, we identified over 100 people who said they are interested in becoming leaders. We also helped a handful of environmental leaders get appointed to a local board.
We intentionally front-loaded the growth outlined in our 10-year action plan, because we knew the fight ahead required a massive response. We are in a crucial time in North Carolina’s history. Our state is not just facing one watershed moment. It faces many. Think about it:
• If Duke Energy doesn’t clean up their over 35 coal ash lagoons in our state, we could face spill after spill of highly toxic waste in our rivers.

• If the NC General Assembly allows fracking to begin in our state, farms could be lost, water could be tainted, and communities destroyed.
• If President Obama’s administration allows sonar testing for offshore oil reserves to begin on our coast it could pave the way for drilling, putting our over 300 miles of pristine coastline and over 2 billion tourism dollars at grave risk.
• If the Environmental Management Commission decides to throw away decades worth of clean water protections, our waterways could become polluted and lifeless.
But, what if we came out on the right side of these watershed moments? What if we were able to make Duke Energy clean up all of their coal ash lagoons? What if our state decides not to allow fracking operations to begin? What if the President’s administration did not allow sonar testing on our coast? What if…
It is the “what ifs” that keeps NC Conservation Network working so hard. With your support and encouragement we can make sure that North Carolina comes out on the right side of these “what ifs”. Together we will protect the beautiful state we know and love.
