    Lack of transparencyover water concerning

    As a candidate for Moorestown

Town Council, I am disheartenedat how the Moorestown water de-partment has been managed bythe current township administra-tion. The lack of transparency istruly concerning. For years, thisadministration denied that therewas a problem with our water. Itwasn’t until they were backedinto a corner by the NJDEP andconcerned residents that theybegan to act. The overall misman-agement is going to cost the

ratepayers millions. At last month’s council meet-ing, the township manager, ScottCarew, was not himself aware if the Kings Highway Water Plantwas once again pumping water tothe residents of Moorestown ornot. What does this say about theoverall capabilities of this admin-istration?

It is now my understandingthat the manager of the water de-partment/acting director of pub-lic works submitted his resigna-

tion last week. For some reason, the township manager and themayor have decided not to informthe residents of this resignation.

The residents of Moorestowndeserve nothing less than full

transparency, especially when itcomes to our drinking water.

    Kati Angelini

    How is school taxincrease justified?

When is enough, enough?Your article “BOE approves

school budget with tax increase”in the May 11-17 edition of thepaper indicates the newMoorestown school budget will beincreased by 3.96 percent. How isthat increase justified?

There is no inflation in the Unit-ed States, just ask any Social Secu-rity recipient. Their cost of living

increase in Social Security bene-fits was zero. Our county is experi-encing the lowest interest rates indecades – some countries, notablyJapan and some European coun-tries, have reached negative inter-est rates. The banks actuallycharge their depositors’ interest tokeep the money on deposit.

When will the school districtrealize these incremental rate in-creases far exceeding inflationwill ultimately drive residentsfrom our town?

In The Sun article, it stated“That enrollment has gonedown.” Then why the rate in-crease considering the abovepoints?

e’ re all familiar with Me-

morial Day. We know that it

is a day set aside to honor

the brave men and women who made

the ultimate sacrifice to protect our

country and the freedom we have.

And we know that it is celebrated on

the last Monday in May, thereby creat-ing a three-day weekend for most.

Maybe it shouldn’t be that way.

Back when Memorial Day was first

established during the Civil War era, it

was observed on May 30. It had its own

special day, which, many will argue,

kept the focus on the meaning of the

    day.

    They have a point.

When one thinks of Memorial Day

these days, it’s easy to lose focus.

There are Memorial Day sales at

stores and the “kick-off to summer”sentiment. That people have three

days off often overshadows what the

spirit of Memorial Day is all about.

We don’t want to sound completely

    negative. Many communities still take

pride in holding a thoughtful, mean-

    ingful Memorial Day ceremony

and/or parade. We still see flags dis-

played. We still see a lot of people take

time to honor those who died serving

    our country.

But we also can’t help but think that

lumping Memorial Day into a three-

    day weekend has diminished the

meaning of the day – at least some-

what. There are too many distractions.

How many of us have made Memorial

Day weekend plans that have absolute-

ly nothing to do with honoring the

meaning of the day?Memorial Day should be special. It

should be a time when every Ameri-

can reflects on the sacrifices made on

his or her behalf and takes the time to

    pay proper respect. Nothing should

    distract from those sentiments.

Will the three-day weekend be re-

placed with a move back to May 30?

Doubtful. It’s going to be up to each in-

dividual to cut through the clutter and

honor those who made the ultimate

    sacrifice.

    in our opinion

Memorial DayThree-day weekend or a return to a traditional day of remembrance?

    Holiday weekend distractions

Memorial Day shouldn’t be about salesor heading to the beach. It should beabout honoring those who died servingthis country. How do you reflect onMemorial Day?

phone when we have questions, by reach-ing out to us when you have a news tip.Without that cooperation and interest inyour “town newspaper,” The Sun wouldn’tbe what it is today! Congratulations againto all our award winners!

    Paul T. Andrews April 29, 2016

Paul T. Andrews, 67, of Jamestown, R.I., and formerly of Moorestown, passed away peace-fully on Friday, April 29 at hishome surrounded by his lovingfamily after, in his typical style, successfully proving the medicalfield wrong about just how longhe would be able to battle cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Suzann “Suzi” (Fink) Andrewsand father to Nikki AndrewsGladding. Born in East Orange,he was a son of the late Elias and

Ann (Nickalopolus) Andrews. In his childhood, he was active

in the Boy Scouts and EagleScouts. He was the first Greek

Boy Scout to earn the AlphaOmega Award. He went on toearn the Order of the Arrow,Nathan Hale Award and twoPalms.

Paul received a bachelor's de-gree in business and political sci-ence from Millikin University in1972. He was an accomplished en-trepreneur in many fields. Hegrew a single office real estateand insurance company to a fiveoffice, multi-county company andexpanded it to include propertymanagement, a leasing divisionand land development. He was apassionate collector of classiccars, and turned that, of course, into a successful business endeav-or. He was president of theBurlington County Board of Real-tors, a founding member of fivecounty MLS system in South Jer-sey, active in Rotary, MoorestownHistorical Society, and a memberof the NADA. He gave us more tolist, but we think you get the

point.Besides his wife and daughter,he also leaves Nikki's husbandKen, of Jamestown, who he re-garded as his son, his rescue pitbull and guardian angel Olive, and three granddogs, Tuukka,Charlie and Tommy.

A celebration of Paul's life willbe held this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests thatdonations be made to the SouthKingstown Animal Shelter, whichsaved Olive; the North Kingstown

Animal Shelter, which savedTommy; or the Potter League, where Paul would often go andthen beg Suzi to let him bringmore dogs home.

novative Conceptual EngineeringDesign. ICED was started in con-

junction with Charles Camarda of NASA’s program called Epic

Challenge, where students are en-couraged to develop their scientif-ic understanding and skills bycoming up with creative solutionsto real-world problems.

“I thought we could bring thisprogram (originally for collegestudents) to young students of allages and engage them and moti-vate them on how to use creativi-ty and critical thinking to comeup with innovative ideas tosolve,” Camarda said.

    “When you put different people

on a problem, you can come upwith some very innovative solu-tions,” Wilczewski said.

This year’s challenge wasabout how they would colonizeMars.

What makes Wilczewski’scourse unique is he allows thestudents to decide what theywould like to do their project on.Students’ projects ranged fromtravel with antimatter, to bring-ing livestock to Mars, to architec-ture and insulation needs.

For their hard work, MHS wasone of a few high schools invitedby Camarda to NASA’s LangleyResearch Center in Hampton, Va.,where students presented the

findings of their research.Through Moorestown Education-al Foundation donating $4,000 forthe trip and fundraising, studentsMary Cervantes, Melvin Shep-pard, Hunter Smith, MaganSteinagle, Ryan Wenzler, Alexis EAngelini, Reeves Balderson, AlexBewley, Alexandria Alberic-

Brown, James Adams, Olivia Al-varez, Lawson Hayes, Muham-mad Khalid, Karla Peterson andNicholas Venti presented theirfindings live to a board of engi-neers, Ph.D.s and an astronaut.Additional students shared withNASA via YouTube. Their pres-entation was streamed livearound the world and was viewedby people in the United States andFinland.

“I felt very privileged because Iknow a lot of students don’t get

the chance to do this type of pro-gram and have these types of ex-periences,” Smith said.

All students greatly appreciat-ed and benefitted from the visit, saying they never thought theywould get the opportunity, andthe class really bonded over theexperience.

“We all benefitted from that inindescribable ways. How manypeople can say in their highschool career they got to talk tohead engineers of NASA and hadthem listen to their ideas and taketheir ideas on board? It made youfeel like you had power to change
