If one were to drive along theCooper River in Collingswood orCherry Hill this summer during aweekday afternoon, they may seea team of sailboats sailing alongthe water.

These particular boats are notpiloted by adults, but rather kids, ages 9 to 18, from around SouthJersey. The kids come from asclose as Haddonfield and CherryHill to as far as Sewell and Med-ford. They have different back-grounds, attend different schoolsand have different groups of friends. However, together theyshare a common bond in their in-terest in sailing.

These kids make up the CooperRiver Yacht Club youth sailingteam. The team competes in the

Mid-Atlantic Yacht Racing Asso-ciation series on Thursdays dur-ing the summer, racing other kidsfrom across New Jersey andaround the region. The team willbe hosting a regatta on July 30against the association’s otherteams.

The team members all havehad different journeys into thesport. Some have been sailing formore than five years, some for as

little as two or three. However, all11 members talk of their team asits own little club.

“Meeting new people is reallyawesome,” said Annalise Rowl-ing, 15, of Haddonfield. “As far asI know, I’m the only person in my

school or grade that sails.”Cherry Hill resident Skye

Mada, 11, said she didn’t knowanyone in her school or group of friends who sailed prior to start-ing.

    “When I started, I didn’t really

know anyone,” she said. “Every-one was so nice to me.”

Haddonfield resident LeoBrickner, 12, said he got into sail-ing because he wanted to do aunique summer activity.

“It’s fun to always have some-

thing to do rather than sittingaround doing nothing,” he said.“It’s fun saying I sail.”

Head coach Robert Graham of Moorestown said sailing requiresa high level of patience. He com-plimented his team, saying allmembers have grown in maturitysince they first started.

“Some people, it takes too longfor them to like it and that’s whenthey quit,” he said. “There’s a cer-tain level of maturity that’s re-quired.”

Cameron Acito, 17, of CherryHill said he was attracted to thesport because of the patience andmaturity required to master it.

“I definitely like the independ-ence factor that your actions arereciprocated through how youperform,” he said.

“It’s really fun having a big re-sponsibility like this,” said

Cameron’s younger brother, 11-year-old Nathan. “I like learninghow to race and keep your boatnice for all of the regattas.”

“I like the freedom,” saidAidan Ryder, 14, of Medford. “Wewere alone in our own boats hav-ing a good time.”

Just like other sports teams, there’s a large time commitment

Coldwell Banker Preferred has acquiredthe assets of B.T. Edgar & Son Realtors inMoorestown.

The company’s single sales office, locat-ed at 27 E. Main St., will now operate asColdwell Banker Preferred.

Dave Lewis, the broker and owner of

B.T. Edgar & Son Realtors, which was es-tablished in 1923, will continue with Cold-well Banker Preferred. He brings morethan 25 years of real estate brokerage expe-rience to the company.

“Dave Lewis and the sales professionals

affiliated with B.T. Edgar & Son Realtorshave a phenomenal reputation in southernNew Jersey for marketing and sales,” saidDavid Krieger, president of ColdwellBanker Preferred. “This acquisition strate-gically grows our presence in this market-place and provides a solid foundation for

future expansion and growth.”With this acquisition, Coldwell Banker

Preferred now has 10 offices and a salesforce of more than 600 affiliated sales asso-ciates and staff serving the communities of the Greater Philadelphia area and the

Delaware Valley, including northernDelaware and southern New Jersey.

“By affiliating with Coldwell BankerPreferred, the sales associates will gain ac-cess to innovative technology and market-ing programs that otherwise would nothave been available,” said Lewis. “We look

forward to continuing to provide the supe-rior customer service thathomebuyers andsellers have come to know and expect fromus. As part of Coldwell Banker Preferred, Iam confident that we will exceed their ex-pectations.”

Moorestown realty acquired by Coldwell Banker Preferred

The calendar is about to turn the

page to August, and here we

    are, talking about November al-

    ready. We’re talking about Tuesday,

Nov. 3, to be precise. That’s the date for

    the General Election this year.

Yes, temperatures may still soar to

the 90s outside right now, instead of being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even

    40s – hopefully not – as they’re likely to

be in November. Still, the time both we

as voters and the candidates them-

selves spend now determine what our

lives look like for the near future.

This fall, there is no “big name” seat

up for election. Gov. Christie’s seat is

not up for election, though he is doing

some campaigning himself, as we all

    know.

There are no Senate or House of

Representatives seats up for election in

our state, either. But still, 2015 could

prove to be an important year locally.

That’s because, as is the case in odd-

numbered years, all 80 seats in the

General Assembly are up for election.

These elections are just as impor-

tant, if not more so, on a local level

than an election for president of theUnited States. These are the people

    who represent your interests.

    Throughout New Jersey, municipal

governing bodies and boards of educa-

tion will also be holding elections to

choose new members to represent the

    town. Mayors, councilmembers and

school board members often have a

greater impact on your daily life than

    your governor and president.

The governor and president may be

the “sexier” post to vote for, but your

trash pickup, your property taxes and

    your kids’ school curriculum have

more of an impact on your day-to-day

life, and those local post holders are

the ones who control those areas the

    most.

So just because you won’t be voting

for the next governor or the next presi-

dent doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be in

    tune with this November’s elections

    and this November’s issues.

We at The Sun will be providing you

as much election coverage as we can

this fall, especially when there is a con-

tested election at the municipal level. If your town has a contested munici-

pal election, expect a full, multi-week

Meet the Candidates series where we’ll

    provide you detailed information

about the election itself, as well as pro-

files of the candidates and their

    stances on the issues.

If you have any questions you’d like

us to ask the candidates, feel free to

email us at the address to the right.

So while you may still be making

trips to the beach and thinking about

back to school or the start of football

instead of heading to the polls, don’t

fall behind on the issues. What hap-

pens behind those curtains in Novem-

ber could have a profound impact on

what happens in front of them for the

    foreseeable future.

    in our opinion

Get ready to voteThis year’s election is very important for New Jersey residents

    Your thoughts

We want to hear your thoughts aboutwhat’s important to you this electionseason. Send your thoughts and questionsto the email address listed at the right.

The SunIn the summer of 2005, Money

magazine named Moorestown asthe best place to live in the nation. And while Moorestown didn’t re-tain the title in the magazine’smost recent survey in 2013, youwouldn’t know it by talking tolocal residents.

“I think it still is the best placeto live,” councilman and 29-yearresident Greg Newcomer said.

Each year Money looks at a

number of data points, including job growth, housing prices, medi-an family income, education qual-ity and diversity with a heavy em-phasis on certain factors depend-ing on the economy at the time. Itnarrows down the list from thereand looks at more fun factorssuch as weather, community andculture. When the list is nar-rowed down further, Money sendsreporters to the towns to see whatreally makes them special to cre-ate a top 10.

Donna Rosato, senior writer atMoney, visited Moorestown backin 2005 and was struck by thecharm of the town, the education-al system, the convenient locationto major cities, the history andthe loyalty of residents comingback to raise a family.

“I found it to be a very charm-ing town. It struck me that somany people grew up and wantedto move back so their childrencould have the same experience.

They were really thrilled aboutthe schools, there were major em-ployers, and there wasn’t muchoverdevelopment. That is what Iremember from the town,” Rosatosaid. “Our list is aimed at people

looking for a place to raise theirfamily.”

These same factors are stilltrue in Moorestown today.

David Lewis of ColdwellBanker Preferred was inter-viewed in 2005 as a resident whogrew up in Moorestown, movedaway and came back to raise afamily. As a Realtor, he findsmany people coming back toMoorestown for a number of rea-sons, but mostly to raise a family.

“There are three things thatmake Moorestown special: the

school system, Main Street andthe tree canopy,” Lewis said. “It isa great place to grow up and agreat place to raise a family.”

Newcomer moved toMoorestown initially for a beauti-ful house and the excellent schoolsystem. Since then, he has grownto love the town for its many jew-els. For him, the big three are theschool system, the parks and thepeople, especially with their vol-unteerism.

“We have the small town feel-ing where people know eachother and care about each other,”Newcomer said.

For Gina Zegel, a 39-year-resi-dent of Moorestown, her husbandwanted to move to Moorestowndue to its charm. Raising her fam-ily here and making great friends, she now calls it her new home-town.

Her favorite part of Moorestown is the history andthe community, like Julie Roben-

hymer, former Miss New Jersey, said in 2005. She feels it is great tohave a town with rich history andknows its roots. She also likes thediversity of people in the townwho all want the same things, cre-

ating a community.“In other towns, you don’t have

the same sense of communitylike we have here,” Zegel said.

According to Rosato, a numberof different criteria could bump atown off the list, such as a higherincome average and housingprices, low job growth, over devel-opment or poor education. Andeach year different factors are putinto consideration. In 2005,Rosato suspects that Moorestownhad high job opportunities andwas more affordable at the time,

helping it make the list that year.“The towns were a mix of dif-

ferent places across the U.S. Butthe No. 1 thing we looked for (in2013) was strong job market. Ithas taken a long time for solid jobgrowth. Those that hit the list had

job growth, diversity and indus-try,” Rosato said.

This year Money will onceagain release its best places tolive list for 10,000 and 50,000 popu-lation towns. According toRosato, there is nothing a towncan do to make the list as theirnumbers play a big factor. But if the numbers are right, Rosatosaid towns can stand out by keep-ing things fresh.

“I think one of the things atown can do is always try to keepit fresh: attract new employers, dowhat you can to keep the town’scharm, don’t over build, addsomething like a new art galleryor stadium, just keep improving,”Rosato said.

Newcomer said that thoughMoorestown has a lot of good at-tributes, he still feels there arethings Moorestown can improve

    ‘A very charming town’

Residents reflect on why Moorestown, named the bestplace to live in 2005, is still a great community

The Moorestown Business Association was created to improve the township’s business relations

Loyalty, unique downtown bring businesses to Moorestown

    By BRIGIT BAUMAThe Sun

The Moorestown Business As-sociation was established in 1974.Since its beginning, its mission tobring together businesses to col-laborate and improve relationsamong businesses, the townshipand residents hasn’t changed. However, like most things, as timegoes on, changes need to be madeto fit the current world.

Ten years ago, the president of the MBA was featured in an arti-cle in The Moorestown Sun’s firstissue. For its anniversary, TheSun sits down with current presi-dent Don Powell to see what haschanged with the MBA and busi-ness itself in Moorestown overthe past 10 years.

    Powell has been a business

owner since 1986 with PowellBuilding Cooperation, now Pow-ell Energy & Solar, LLC aftermerging his construction expert-ise with his solar technology ex-pertise. He decided to have hisbusiness in Moorestown becausehe lived here.

However, he said there are ad-vantages to starting a business inMoorestown. The communityfeels a sense of loyalty to thetown, it has a great and uniquedowntown shopping district, andfamilies are willing to buy local tokeep things that way.

“It is a very friendly town. Peo-ple feel an allegiance to the town. They actually shop local becausethey want the shops to be there. There are towns where peopledon’t care about the merchants. Here, people are willing to spend

a few extra dimes at their localmerchants, which is a great ad-vantage,” Powell said.

When starting a business, hesaid the big questions to ask are:“Is there competition?” and “Isthere an audience for my prod-uct?” In the 2005 Sun article, thequestion often forgotten by newbusinesses was “How are yougoing to market your business?”Powell agrees that is still truetoday, especially with smart-phones and the Internet beingbigger than in 2005. However, hestill feels the former two are thebiggest questions to ask.

“You certainly don’t want totry to start up a business and findthere is no audience for it, or youhave three other people doing the

exact same thing,” Powell said. The MBA is there to help busi-

nesses in Moorestown be success-ful. Members are added to theMBA’s directory, which includesuseful information such as phonenumbers, events and calendars.

The association also offersmonthly meetings and network-ing events for members. Theseare great times to get to knowother businesses as well as learndifferent strategies, talk about is-sues and network, Powell said. Itwas through a meeting in Febru-ary the MBA made its first infor-mal subcommittee called theMoorestown Merchant’s Council, which devotes its time to theneeds and assistance of the retailmerchants in town.

“We are here to help business-es, promote businesses and helppeople do more business,” Powellsaid.

The MBA had 114 members inthe summer of 2005. It now has292 members, doubling in the past10 years, despite the recession.Due to its increased enrollment, the MBA can do a lot more than itcould in previous years.

From 2005 to now, the MBA hasbeen able to donate money oritems to the township. Starting in2008, it was able to give scholar-ships to two graduating seniorsliving in Moorestown pursuing amajor in business or a related

field and community or extracur-ricular service.

The MBA hosts six majorevents in town. In 2005, the MBAhosted four major town events:Moorestown Day (since 1976),Candlelight Night (1976), Autumnin Moorestown Festival (1993) andthe Easter Egg Hunt (1993). Sincethen, it has added the HalloweenParade (2006) and “Music onMain Street” Concerts (co-host,2013).

According to Powell, the MBAis going add two more events totry to help businesses in town, specifically in the shopping dis-tricts, Main Street, Chester Av-enue and Lenola. The events are

Ladies Night Out in October andDaffodil Day in spring 2016.Ladies Night Out is planned to bea Thursday in October where

merchants in town will host pro-motions, serve special refresh-ments and offer discounts toshoppers. Daffodil Day, a spinoff of an event from Nantucket, is aday where merchants will get intothe daffodil theme with yellowcolors and spring freshness.

“We’ve been doing the same sixevents for a number of years. Iand other members thought itwould be a good idea to do morethings to bring people into thetown and businesses. We thoughtwe’d try to add more events andsee if we can’t create a little moreenthusiasm in our shopping dis-tricts,” Powell said.

The downtown-shopping dis-trict is one of Moorestown’sbiggest appeals and differentfrom other towns. The walkableand beautified streets, as well asvariety of retailers, offer aunique shopping experience.

Having local merchants, as op-posed to big retail stores, in the

shopping district is an advantageMoorestown has. With local mer-chants, residents know their busi-ness like the back of their hand.

“The nice ambiance of beingable to shop in little stores and anice variety of stores and productofferings is what makes the down-town shopping area special,”Powell said.

Since 2005, Powell said thebiggest changes there were in theproliferation of eateries and bou-tique stores. In 2005, Main Street

had only two restaurants, accord-ing to Powell; now there areseven. Also, many spaces thatused to be offices have convertedinto boutique-like shops, and thisis continuing to increase.

Powell hopes for the future of the MBA that more Moorestownbusinesses that aren’t members

join. There is strength in num-bers, and Powell feels with morepeople involved, the bigger voiceit will have within the township,

as well as the power to help eachother and the town be successful. To learn more about the MBA,

events or membership visitmoorestownbusiness. com or talkto a current MBA member.
