The first month of 2016 hasalready come and gone, and plansare being made for summer. As thedeadline fast approaches, we urgethose individuals seeking summeremployment or volunteer opportu-nities to visit the Department of

Parks and Recreation website toapply.Summer employment with the

Department of Parks and Recre-ation is a great opportunity forthose seeking seasonal employ-ment, from educational profes-sionals to high school students.The department runs a full spec-trum of summer day camps andclinics that require oversight andpersonnel. Every summer, the de-

partment manages and overseesthe Summer Parks program,which in 2016 includes New Al-bany Recreation Center, Baker El-ementary School, Roberts Elemen-tary School and the Upper Ele-mentary School. Each site func-tions with a site supervisor who isa state certified and licensed edu-cator, and a full professional staff of adults, college and high schoolstudents. The sites are operationalfrom 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily andoffer youth ages 5 to 12 years a re-laxed camp atmosphere filled with

friends and fun summer activities.Additionally, the department of-fers the Summer Special NeedsCamp for individuals with specialneeds ages 5 to 21 years that isstaffed by licensed, certified spe-cial needs educators and care-givers. This camp runs Mondaythrough Thursday from 12:30 p.m.to 3:30 p.m. an extension of the Ex-tended School Year, forMoorestown Township Public

Schools, and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. onFridays and will take place at theMoorestown UES in summer.Caregivers and educators facili-tate this daily program in a lovingand supportive environment thatprovides stability and consistencyfor special needs students. Underthe direction of special needsteacher and supervisor CatherineMcCarthy-Devone, this programteams professionals and studentstogether.

The Recreation Summer The-ater Program is another summer

Library grateful for SeanFischel Connect donation

The Moorestown Library wish-es to express our deepest gratitudeto Sean Fischel Connect for its re-cent donation of $10,000 in supportof children's programming.

Since 2013, Sean Fischel Con-nect has supported numerouschildren's programs at theMoorestown Library, includingpuppet shows, magicians and sto-rytellers. Last year, with the sup-port of Sean Fischel Connect, thelibrary introduced the "1,000Books Before Kindergarten" pro-gram. So far, more than 200

Moorestown children and theirfamilies are taking the challengeto get ready for kindergarten byreading 1,000 books together. Thesponsorship allows the library toprovide reading logs, incentiveprizes and a celebration for all thechildren who complete the chal-lenge.

Sean Fischel Connect has alsocontributed to making the Chil-dren's Room of our new library a

favorite destination of Moorestown children. Sean'sShed, our indoor playhouse, is thefirst stop for many children visit-ing the library, and members of the community as well as Sean'sextended family have donatedspecial books in his memory toestablish Sean's Book Nook.

This latest gift will allow the li-brary to purchase a new bookcaseto double the size of Sean's BookNook, which has outgrown itsoriginal space. In addition, thecommunity can look forward tonew programming initiativessuch as Science Saturdays withthe Franklin Institute and a newsummer math program, Bedtime

Math's Summer of Numbers.The Moorestown Library is de-lighted to be able to expand ourchildren's services so dramaticallyas a result of this substantial do-nation. We are especially proud tooffer these initiatives in memoryof Sean Fischel through the gen-erosity of Sean Fischel Connect.

Swimming has always been a part of Jamie Platt’s life.

The Cherry Hill native had competed forWoodcrest and Barclay Farm swim clubs,Burlington and Camden County YMCA,Cherry Hill High School East and Susque-hanna University for more than a decade.In that time, she was part of a record-set-ting relay team at the Cherry Bowl in 2001and a sectional championship team withCherry Hill East in 2009.

So when Platt’s college swimming ca-reer ended after her sophomore year due to

an injury, Platt wanted to find a way to stayinvolved in the sport.

“Being involved with swimming at theage of 4, I couldn’t just give up swimming,”she said. “So I stayed on as a team manag-er.”

Just five years later, Platt is back inSouth Jersey and is ready to coach one of the strongest swim clubs in the Tri CountySwimming Pool Association.

Sunnybrook Swim Club in Moorestownrecently hired Platt to take over as headcoach of its competitive swim team. Plattwill officially take over when preparationfor next summer’s season begins in May.

Platt can’t remember a time she didn’t

spend either in oraround a pool. Shebegan swimming at theage of 4 and soon afterwas competing for theWoodcrest Swim Clubin Cherry Hill and forthe Camden CountyYMCA.

For more than adecade, Platt’s namewas in the Cherry Bowlrecord book. She was part of the girls’ 9-10medley relay team for Woodcrest in 2001.

If you sit on a school board or mu-nicipal governing body, you’re en-tering the part of the year that

probably causes you the mostheadaches. It’s budget time. It’s time todo the impossible: provide outstandingservice for little or no money.

A few years ago, Gov. Christie madeheadlines –and more than a few ene-mies – when he slashed state fundingand eventually added a 2 percent capon tax hikes.

Since then, at least some of themoney has returned. Sometime thismonth, the governor will release statefunding figures for this year.

But it’s safe to say that no district ortown will find itself rolling in dough.Governing bodies will continue to facedecisions that involve reducing orholding the line on services and/or

raising taxes. And we all love moretaxes, don’t we?

We already pay the highest propertytaxes in the nation, so why not paymore? One bright spot – some wouldsay the only bright spot – to come of this is that many governing bodiesthese days have made the budgetprocess open to the public.

“Transparent” is the watchwordtoday.

It’s a smart move to involve the pub-lic – everyone from those who want to

cut taxes to the bone to those whowould like to see expanded services.

When the public is invited in, theynot only see the difficult choices lead-ers have to make, but they also feel likethey have a voice. Leaders are listeningto them. Their input is valued. While

not everyone will be happy with everydecision, at least there is a sense of in-clusion and “ownership” of theprocess.

We encourage everyone to get in-volved with their local budget process-es this year. In most instances, therewill be hearings. Items will be postedonline.

It’s easy to offer your suggestions tothe people who eventually will makethe final decision.

And, chances are, your feedback willbe appreciated.

Last November, the non-profitSean Fischel Connect – started tohonor the memory of Kim Fis-chel’s son, Sean, who lost his lifein January 2013 after battling he-mophagocytic lymphohistiocyto-

sis – held its annual fundraiserthe Sean Fischel Connect 5k and 1Mile Fun Run.

From that run, theMoorestown Library received itsbiggest donation yet from SeanFischel Connect, a whopping$10,000.

“It was an easy decision tocome here again … Being able toput that (money fundraised) backinto the community in such visu-al ways is just extremely reward-ing. I was giddy coming in here togive the check,” Fischel said.

Sean Fischel Connect startedits connection with theMoorestown Library even before

its annual run. A caring parentfrom the community approachedChildren’s Librarian JenniferDunne and Fischel about havinga book nook in honor of Sean’smemory where people could do-

nate children’s books to the li-brary. From that one “ratty littlebookcase” in the old library, aconnection was born.

When residents pass along theintersection at South and Secondstreets, just before theMoorestown Municipal Buildingand library, they now have a clearview of the complex, as the old li-brary has been demolished.

The Moorestown Town Council

meeting on Monday, Jan. 25 sawdiscussion of what the spacecould be used for in the future.

"I'm just planting the seed forthe council to reach out to me if you have any additional thoughtson this (space)," Township Man-ager Scott Carew said. "We havetalked on multiple occasions tocreate a green space in the spotthe old library is quickly disap-pearing from."

Mayor Phil Garwood suggested

an extension of the parking lot, asspace is kind of tight as it is.Carew said a portion of the prop-erty has been designated for eightadditional parking spaces.

Though there wasn’t disagree-ment on the need for more park-ing, Councilman Manuel Delgadosuggested potentially using thespace as additional outside spacefor the library or recreation cen-

ter. Councilwoman Stacey Jordanagreed, saying the spot could beideal for park benches.

"There are libraries, adjacentto us in other towns, that have anoutdoor space where the libraryitself has an additional amenityoutside of it to read a book or do apuzzle," Delgado said. "It would benice to have something like that."

After discussing the matter fur-ther, council members agreed tohave the manager meet with the

township's landscape architect,Scott Taylor, to come up with de-sign concepts for the site andhopefully a concrete plan.

With this new donation, theMoorestown Library will be ableto purchase a new bookcase todouble the size of Sean's BookNook, which has outgrown its

original space. Additionally, thecommunity will be provided withnew programming initiativessuch as Science Saturdays withthe Franklin Institute and a new

Willoughby feels PCA is a wayto connect the communitythrough art. Through all of theseprograms and more, he has done

so.“One of the things I love aboutPerkins and things I’ve tried tocontinue to grow is that connec-

tion to people and the communi-ty,” he said.

Willoughby chose to resign tospend more time on his work as aceramics artist. He feels he hasdeveloped new skills and ways atlooking at things in his positionthat he would like to bring intohis own work.

The Board of Trustees decidedan interim executive directorwould be appropriate, especiallyone from within PCA who knewthe center, and asked Chigounisto step in.

Chigounis holds a bachelor’s of fine arts degree, a teacher certifi-cation and a master’s of sciencedegree in arts and cultural man-agement. Chigounis was teachingfor years and working in adminis-tration at other venues before ap-plying for her previous positionwith PCA. She has been with PCAfor more than 10 years.

“It was a perfect marriage forme, of working in administrationwith a serious focus in arts educa-tion and also working as a cura-

tor in Collingswood,” she said.Chigounis has played a majorpart in the ARTS program and in-corporating art in the Science,

Technology, Engineering andMathematics initiatives at

schools as well as helping withthe curation of the Collingswoodlocation.

The plan is to have Chigounisbe interim over the next twoyears, but she, too, plans on retir-ing soon. Along with Willoughby,she believes the new generationwould be a valuable asset to PCAand would like to pass the torchon to it.

“I am sure that PCA will con-tinue to grow and evolve, bring-ing in new voices. There is a foun-dation (set), as a program, when Icame that is still here, but I’vealso helped to nurture and grow(PCA). Since then, there has beena lot of change … and who knowswhat will happen in the future?”Willoughby said.

“I hope PCA continues to be aresource for the community and(that we) find resources in thecommunity to help us move for-ward. I’d also love … to help to re-spond to needs while keeping the

PCA’s integrity and bringing artsto the community,” Chigounissaid.
