This past November, KelsieDonovan was a little too busy toenjoy her Thanksgiving leftovers.

The Moorestown High Schoolsophomore spent Nov. 28 through30 competing at the Mid-AtlanticU.S. Regional Oireachtas, a quali-fier for the 2015 World Irish Danc-ing Championship, at thePhiladelphia Marriott.

The World Irish DancingChampionship is Irish dancingspremier event. It is an eight-daycompetition typically heldaround Easter. Dancers comefrom the Republic of Ireland,Northern Ireland, England, Scot-land, Wales, all over Europe,

South Africa, Australia, the U.S.and Canada to try to win a worldtitle. For an Irish dancer to makeit to the World Championshipstage even once is a feat.

Donovan placed 17th out of 130girls in her competition group,qualifying her for the 2015 WorldIrish Dancing Championship,which will be held at the Palaisdes Congres de Montreal in Mon-treal, Canada, from March 29

through April5.

Donovangrew up danc-ing for theO'Shea Chap-lin School ofIrish dance inBoston fromthe age of 5.She got intoIrish dancingwhen she saw a river dance andthought it was something she re-ally wanted to do. Her motherthen signed her up for classes andshe stuck with it ever since.

Its a lot of fun, but a lot ofhard work. You have to reallywant it to start it. Once you getinto it, you get to meet a lot of

people and its really exciting. Itsreally rewarding when you dowell, Donovan said.

When the Donovan familymoved to South Jersey two yearsago, she changed schools and nowdances for Broesler. She dances inHaddonfield, Westwood,Delaware and once in awhile inBaltimore.

Moorestown Friends Upper School stu-dents have the ability to take many uniqueelective classes each semester. One of thoseis called Hospice and Healthcare ServiceLearning Class. The class is designed topromote awareness of the needs of fami-lies, patients and caregivers facing difficulthealth-care or end-of-life decisions.

I didnt really know what hospice wasbefore this class. I learned a lot, said stu-dent Rebecca Berg.

The class is offered in the fall semesterfor ninth- through 12th-grade students. Itwas started by MFS teacher Priscilla Tay-lor-Williams and Sally Cezo, manager ofvolunteer services at Samaritan Health-care and Hospice, in 2004. Taylor-Williams

wanted to put together a service course forstudents and saw need when there was arecent member of the school who hadpassed and realized that not everyone hadlearned or would learn about grievingwhen they needed it.

The purpose of the course is to help stu-dents understand the concept of living lifeto the fullest until death; to learn how tomanage grief and how to support lovedones at a very difficult time; to understandwhat a quality hospice and health-care pro-gram offers to families and why it is so im-portant; and to help out Samaritan Health-

care and Hospice specifically.Samaritan is a really quality hospice

care approach. Im glad they get to seewhat a quality institution looks like, Tay-lor-Williams said.

The class works with the Lutheran

Home in Moorestown, not always with hos-pice patients, allowing the addition of un-derstanding of aging to the course.

Staff from Samaritan Healthcare andHospice, from social workers, therapists,chaplains and health-care staff, came intoclasses to explain their work so studentscould learn about the range of servicesprovided in hospice care and the needs ofhospice patients and their relatives.

I give them an overview of Samaritanand talk about what we do. I invite in socialworkers and grief counselors, and come upwith an activity on how we might present

things so that they can learn from eachpresenter. The students are a very hard-working and interactive group. Theyrewonderful, they really are. They learn a

proves to be this year, what needs to

happen between now and next year to

make things better?

Its something that everyoneliving has to overcome, some-thing personal, professional,physical or emotional. All of usneed someone to make us feelgood about ourselves, Wolffsaid.

Wolff is not a professional

writer. He has not done anythinglike this before.Ive always enjoyed putting

down words to paper. My childrenwould testify to that. I would al-ways write them notes. Its a niceway to communicate. The writtenword is powerful, Wolff said.

When he had his dream, heknew he wanted to do somethingwith it, to communicate this big-ger message for children by usinganimals in a meaningful way.However, it wasnt until 2013 that

Wolff really devoted time to thebook. He found CreateSpace tohelp get his work published andsought out an illustrator on hisown using the Internet. Wolffcommunicated and worked withProulx all online.

Wolff expressed that was themost gratifying part of makingthe book, hearing peoples reac-tions make it worth all of thework involved. It leaves an incred-ibly warm feeling in my heart.

According to Wolff, there is alot of work involved. He had to goover the manuscript at least 300 to400 times, trying different wordsand sentences to see what sound-

ed right or better. He also had a lotof back and forth with Proulx,working on the illustrations andhow they would look within thebook.

At the end of the day, I am veryproud of it and that it came outthe way I wanted it to, Wolffsaid.

Another hard part for Wolffwas keeping this book a secret

from his family. He didnt wantanyone to know until it was pub-lished, so he could surprise hisfamily with the finished project.

According to Wolff, his wife wasvery supportive, and his children,Kristen and Kathleen, to whomhe devoted the book, loved it.

Wolff hopes those who read thebook will get a positive messagethat they can reflect on from timeto time and perhaps apply thatmessage in their life.

Its all about what you do tomake the world a little better,Wolff said.

In Irish dance in North Ameri-ca, every year around Thanksgiv-ing, the top dancers in each re-gion compete in their regionalOireachtas. To qualify for the

World Championships, a dancermust qualify in a RegionalOireachtas or at the North Ameri-can National Championships.Competing against 130 girls, it isunderstandable that Donovanwas nervous.

The goal of Oireachtas is to re-call and then place high enoughto be able to go to Nationals orWorlds. To recall means afterthe dancer has danced a hardshoe and a soft shoe round, theirscore was among the highest of

their age group. Once recalled,the dancer will dance their set

dance, alone, in front of a panel of

judges. The set dance will be thedeciding factor in their totalscore. A certain small percentageof the recalled dancers will thenqualify for either Nationals or theWorld Championships.

Donovan is a part of that smallpercentage.

I was so happy because every-thing I worked for finally paid off.I accomplished my dream andoverall goal. It was just overall ex-citing, Donovan said.

For the 2015 World Irish DanceChampionships, it is the thirdtime in its 45-year history that itis being held outside Ireland orScotland. Approximately 25,000attendees will watch 5,000 of theworlds top Irish dancers competein this weeklong event.

Donovan will have to competeagainst approximately 150 girls inher competition group at theWorld Championships.

Donovan hopes to do well, butshe is also looking forward to

meeting new people and going toa new place.

It showshow much you can take awayfrom death. With the movie, hetried to get everything out beforehe died. And I felt that was reallyimportant, the idea of forgive-ness. They have to forgive beforethey can move on, Berg said.

With Tuesdays with Morrie,its easier to talk about someoneon the screen. It helps them toopen up and realize what is hap-pening at the end of life. Theyhave questions they have to an-swer and we all talk about it.Priscilla and I talk about personalthings and experiences, which al-lows them to feel safe to open upabout their own. They were nerv-ous and scared, but really enjoyed

it. It is a tough topic; it really is.Giving them that empathy and tobe less afraid, that is really thegoal, Cezo said.

Its a positive thing, really. Itmakes your death more comfort-able, added student Jessica Fer-ber.

Though the class will not be of-fered until next school year, it isan interesting class that is avail-able for all students in the UpperSchool. Its a unique class that of-fers important lessons on a some-times-difficult topic.

It always amazes me. Everyyear, we get more and more peo-ple taking the class. When we firststarted, there were about four orfive kids. Now there are 15 andbigger classes. They are veryeager to learn and share aboutthis tough topic, Cezo said.
