On Aug. 11, Moorestown resident Charlotte Reilly, 10 months, spent some time at the MoorestownLibrary. Along with crawling around and having fun playing with toys, Charlotte also found sometime to enjoy ‘reading’ a few books.

It’s all peaches and cream inmore ways than one for theMoorestown First UnitedMethodist Church on Friday, Aug.21.

Friday will be the celebrationof two major events for thechurch – its annual Peach Festi-val as well as its 200th anniver-sary. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,Moorestown citizens and mem-bers of the church get to enjoyfresh peaches, homemade bakedgoods, ice cream and, of course, birthday cake for the occasion.

“It is a time for the communityto get together and celebrate dif-

ferences through the peach, all inone place,” associate pastorHeyYoung Horton said.

The FUMC in Moorestown wasincorporated and built on MainStreet in 1815 with only 50 peoplein membership by 1845, but dou-bling the next year. Since then, the church location was moveduntil it was built in its current lo-

The annual Peach Festival hasbeen held for more than 50 years, but no one remembers exactlywhen it started. However, it hasbeen a long-time Moorestown tra-dition for members of the churchas well as residents and thosefrom the surrounding area.

Normally, the Peach Festival isheld on a Saturday. However, be-

cause the 200th birthday falls onFriday, Aug. 21, the church decid-ed to change it to Friday.

At the Peach Festival and 200thcelebration, there will be a picnicin the courtyard where pork roll, hot dogs and hamburgers will besold by the church’s youthgroups, as well as the Peach Festi-val in Fellowship Hall wherethere will be peaches, baked

goods and ice cream, musical en-tertainment from four differentmusicians, children’s activitiessuch as inflatable bounce housesand face painting and a slideshow of the history of the churchover the past 200 years. Musicwill be provided by Hank Mason,Al and Cindy Cope, Kathleen Def-fley and the Sanctuary Band.

Tickets are $5 per person, $15per family and free for childrenunder 5. Tickets may be pur-chased in advance at the churchoffice or at the festival.

For the past two years, proceedsfrom the Peach Festival have beendonated to three local food

pantries in desperate need of help.Once again, they will be donatingthe proceeds to Moorestown Min-isterium (St. Matthew Lutheran),Bethel A M E and First Baptist. They also ask attendees to bring acanned good to the festival so theycan deliver both food and moneyto the pantries.

“All proceeds that we collectduring the festival are given to

the three food pantries inMoorestown, feeding over 400people. We try to supply thepantries with food that is greatlyneeded,” Marilyn Arbitter, chair-person of the outreach commit-tee, said. The church has been cel-ebrating its 200th anniversary allyear. It had a visit from a Ugan-dan Choir in January and thePhiladelphia Boys Choir in May.On Sunday, Sept. 13, there will bea special service for the FUMC’s200th anniversary with BishopJohn Schol. At this special serv-ice, the church will honor mem-bers who have been a part for 50years or more and have a per-

formance of a special hymnspecifically written forMoorestown’s FUMC.

“Not many churches now havea 200-year history and are stillgrowing. FUMC is special be-cause it is 200 years old and stillgrowing; a lot of families are stillattending church. That aspect isreally special,” Horton said.

The FUMC is an open churchthat invites anyone from the com-munity to join in festivities aswell as church services. For thefuture, Horton hopes the churchcontinues to grow and future gen-erations continue to carry on itslegacy.

“We are very excited that weare still a growing church, teach-ing our children to be better peo-ple and people who can impact so-ciety in a positive way. I hope ourchildren carry on our legacy tothe 300th and 400th anniversary,”Horton said.

    few more weeks. That’s all

that we have left of summer.

    Technically, there are about

six weeks left, but in the lives of us

New Jersey residents, Labor Day –

when most schools go back in session

for the 2015-2016 year –marks the end

to our summer. No more beach. No more pool. No

more fun – OK, maybe that’s a bit dra-

    matic.

But it’s not all doom and gloom with

summer gone. In fact, there’s plenty to

be excited about, and we’ve been hard

at work covering this excitement al-

    ready.

    Our senior associate editor, Mike

Monostra, loves this time of year.

That’s because the end of August

means the start of one of his pas-

sions – covering sports. Mike has been

on the summer sports camp trail for a

week or so now, and he will continue to

be out and about on local fields as ourhigh school teams continue to prepare

    for the upcoming season.

Soon, you’ll see some of the photos

Mike and our other editors have taken

at these camps. Soon, you’ll begin read-

ing more about the teams, players and

coaches who are involved in the games

they love. And soon, on Sept. 9 to be

exact, you’ll be receiving The Sun’s

High School Fall Sports Preview guide.

Our fall sports preview special sec-

tion is a stand-alone piece previewing

each high school fall sport, with full

schedules for the entire season and fea-

    ture stories as well.

Mike is reaching out to every high

school coach and athletic director for

the fall season for the section. But

we’re calling on parents, coaches and

even players to participate as well.

Sports will be a major focus of up-

coming issues of The Sun, as you’ll

soon see. And not just high school var-sity sports. We want to cover the JV

and freshman teams, as well as all the

    community sports teams.

But we can’t do it all by ourselves.

We need the help of the extended com-

munity. Have a story idea, a score, a

    picture? Send it over.

If we can’t send an editor out to do a

    full-length story and photoshoot, we’ll

make sure your team, sport, league or

    club is still covered.

Our doors are always open – as are

our phone lines and inboxes. Let’s

make this fall sports season one to re-

    member!

ed his resignation was for person-al, family related reasons, and hehad accepted a new position assuperintendent/principal in adistrict in Ocean County.

Prior to being hired as the in-terim superintendent for MTPSin February 2014, Rehm had re-tired to Ocean County from a 36-year educational career in Corn-wall, N.Y.

    Rehm accepted the full-time su-perintendent position in May2014, with a standard three-yearagreement.

Rehm has also previously saidthat the daily commute toMoorestown takes him about anhour.

“Regretfully, for personal rea-sons, it has become necessary forme to relocate back to OceanCounty and seek employmentthere,” Rehm said at the Aug. 11meeting.

Rehm said he’s never found a

board, staff or community thanthat of MTPS that works harderfor the benefit of its children, andhe wished the district continuedsuccess and good fortune in thefuture.

When asked about the processof appointing a replacement,Goldenberg said the board wasstill waiting for the state Depart-ment of Education to give ap-proval for an acting superintend-ent.

    However, Goldenberg said she

didn’t know how long that ap-proval might take.

Regarding filling the positionlong-term, Goldenberg said that

responsibility fell on the mem-bers of the board as elected offi-cials and the board would follow amethodical process of research.

“Every member of this boardof education wants to have some-one who comes who is a part of us and stays,” Goldenberg said.

Bridget Potts, a teacher atMary E. Roberts ElementarySchool, spoke on behalf of Moorestown Education Associa-tion president Lisa Trapani, whowas away on vacation.

Potts said the MEA believedRehm was a professional and re-spectful educational leader andwanted to thank Rehm for hisservice to the district.

“He respected what we did in-structionally because he actuallyworked as a teacher and knowswhat life in a classroom and in aschool district is like. Therefore,he was able to move us forward ina collaborative manner,” Pottssaid.

Regarding the search for a re-placement, South Valley Elemen-tary teacher Cricket Dever voicedconcerns about the negative ef-fect the “constant” turnover of leadership in the district was hav-ing on children and staff.

Rehm’s departure marks thethird superintendent to have leftthe school district within the pastthree years, following the retire-ment of John Bach in 2012 andthe resignation of Brian Betze in2013.

“I just want to get it right,”Dever said. “I don’t understand it.I was in personnel for 15 years be-fore I went back to teaching and I

would have been fired if this hap-pened in the business world, so Iam hoping that we can get itright.”

Board vice president David We-instein pointed out that while hedidn’t believe the past vettingprocesses were perfect, the mostrecent search ended with Rehm, who Weinstein believed did “fitthe district.”

“It’s unfortunate that Mr. Rehmhas other things in his life thatare bringing him away from us,and we have to all accept that andfind somebody else that will hope-fully fit Moorestown,” Weinsteinsaid.

Weinstein also noted that thestatewide salary cap on superin-tendent’s salaries imposed byGov. Christie several years agowas having a negative effect onthe talent pool of potential candi-dates.
