The Department of Parks andRecreation is proud of the manypartnerships it has developedover the years. Some of thosepartnerships are with organiza-tions and some are with individu-als. This week we highlight thepartnership of two young men,who independently are helping toprovide a much-needed facelift to

the New Albany Recreation Cen-ter.The New Albany Recreation

Center is located at the JeffYoung Memorial Park and Fieldsat the intersection of New Albanyand Lenola Roads. The buildingserves as a classroom, a meetingroom and the site for the SummerParks Day Camp. Over the years, due to heavy use the building hascome to need some tender, lovingcare. Knowing how importantthis facility is to many groupsand community members, twoyoung men are providing thatcare as they rehabilitate both theinterior and the exterior of the fa-cility. Both young men are work-

ing on the Recreation Center astheir Eagle Scout project – bothare from Troop No. 44 – and eachone came independently to ask ifhe could help. For those who are not familiar

with the way an Eagle Scout proj-ect works, the Scouts are respon-sible for the development, imple-mentation and completion of theproject. They are allowed to useother volunteers from theirtroops, but are responsible for theproject coordination themselves.Tackling something like the NewAlbany Recreation Center takesplanning and manpower, and

A total of 6,709 votes were cast for theMoorestown Board of Education seats inthe general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.The results for the uncontested three

Moorestown Board of Education seats willsee incumbents David A. Weinstein andBrandon Pugh returning to the board along with newcomer J. “Harry”Faunce.Weinstein has been on the board since

2009, being named vice president at the be-ginning of this year, while Pugh has been

on the board since his election in 2012.Faunce will be replacing board memberSheryl Sawin, who did not run for re-elec-tion.The unofficial election results came in

with Weinstein receiving 33.7 percent ofthe votes, Pugh receiving 33.1 percent andFaunce receiving 31.8 percent, with 1.4 per-cent personal choice. In the race for Burlington County Board

of Chosen Freeholders, challengers KateGibbs (R) and Ryan Peters (R) defeated in-cumbents Aimee Belgard (D) and JoanneSchwartz (D). Gibbs received 25.8 percentof the vote, and Peters received 25.7 per-

cent.In the race for the 7th Legislative Dis-

trict of the NJ General Assembly, incum-bents Herb Conaway (D) and Troy Single-ton (D) won over challengers Bill Conley(R) and Rob Prisco (R). Conaway receivedabout 31 percent of the vote, while Single-ton received about 30 percent. These results are all from the Burlington

County Election Results atwww.co.burlington.nj.us/1173/2015-Cur-rent-Election-Results.The unofficial results do not include

mail-in or provisional ballots.

BOE seats filled by Weinstein, Pugh, FaunceMoorestown Board of Education will see two returning, one newcomer

Chris Christie was not on theGeneral Election ballot lastTuesday, but the effect he had

on the outcome of elections in NewJersey was profound. At least three state Assembly seats

switched hands from the Republicansto the Democrats last week, with afourth pending official results. If allfour seats switch to the Democrats, itwill reduce the GOP’s number of seatsto 28 out of 80, its lowest total in morethan 30 years.Democrats Joann Downey and Eric

Houghtaling defeated their Republicanincumbent opponents Mary Pat An-gelini and Caroline Casagrande in thestate’s 11th District in MonmouthCounty, a district where Republicansheld both seats since 1992. In the 1st District in South Jersey,

Republican Assemblyman Sam Fioc-chi lost his seat. Democrats Bob An-drzejczak and his running mate Bruce

Land defeated Fiocchi and his runningmate Jim Sauro.Voter turnout is expected to be low –

official results haven’t been releasedyet – because of the lack of a “prime”position to vote for, such as governoror president. But those who did showup to the polls sent a pretty clear mes-sage that they are unhappy with theway things are going in the Assembly. Many political pundits believe this

message was aimed directly at Christieand the Republican Party, and it’s hardto counter that argument.Four years ago, Christie was riding

high as a potential Republican candi-date against President Obama. Feel-

ings were good about Christie in NewJersey and, as a result, about the Re-publican Party in general. Today, after controversies such as

the George Washington Bridge debacleand fight against pensions, the tideshave changed quite substantially. While he’s in the large GOP field

looking for the 2016 nomination,Christie’s bubble has seemed to burst. While the dust has not settled yet, hisonetime status as a rising star seems tohave faded, and his party is paying forhis blunders back home.Last week, voters spoke out against

Christie and his party. In the next fewmonths, his party members will have achance to speak out against him againin the Republican Primary, if he re-mains on the ballot, that is.And then, assuming he doesn’t come

out victorious, he will ride off into thesunset as the Garden State will select anew governor come 2017.

in our opinion

The Chris Christie effectEven though he wasn’t on ballot, the governor had an effect on election outcomes

interior of the center. Securingdonations of paint and repair ma-terials, as well as the guidanceand assistance of a professionalpainter, Millstein has been hardat work in the center. The ceilingand some area of the walls havebeen spackled and repairedwhere needed. Once the ceiling isdone, Millstein will clean the

is tackling the landscaping out-side of the center. Weeding andpruning will just be the tip of thespear with this project. Newplantings and a full beautificationplan is part of Twomey’s project.Developing a landscaping planthat is sustainable and manage-able is a large undertaking. He isworking with other scouts andleaders to make the center wel-coming and beautiful on the out-

side. When not working on his indi-

vidual project, each Eagle Scoutcandidate has been assisting theother. The two Eagle Scouts areworking together to complete therenovation of this community fa-cility which illustrates perfectlythe idea of collaboration thatmakes this community success-ful. The full bathroom on the second floor was upgraded to include granite counters, granite flooring and granite walls. There is also recessedlighting in the bathroom. Natural Remedies for Cold and Fluraise money for The CombustibleLemons.“The Combustible Lemons

would love for Moorestown peo-ple to come watch the scrim-mage,” said Kathie Jim, head ofthe marking department of TheCombustible Lemons.“This will be a big win for

Moorestown if we can pull thisoff. Anytime there is somethingbeneficial and hugely educationalthat can benefit education andlearning within the district at nocost, it is huge,” said ToniFarmer, marketing team mentorand FLL coach.FLL is a division of FIRST (For

Inspiration and Recognition of

Science and Technology) that pro-motes STEM and robotics amongchildren in elementary and mid-dle school from ages 9 to 14. In theMoorestown area alone, there aremany FLL teams, 11 of which willattend this scrimmage to testtheir robots and practice theirpresentations. This scrimmage is the first of

its kind in South Jersey, as thereare no official FLL competitionsin the area. Most are held inDelaware and Pennsylvania. Thereason for this is robotics is newin the area; The CombustibleLemons have only been inMoorestown for three years. However, FIRST Robotics has

exploded in the area.Because of the lack of competi-

tions in South Jersey,Moorestown decided to host anunofficial scrimmage so theteams can practice their presenta-tions and run their robots beforethe actual competition. The hopeis Moorestown will be recognizedby FIRST and may be one of theschools to host an official compe-tition in South Jersey.“Without a host organization

in South Jersey to get behind

FIRST Robotics and FLL, theyjust kept having us go toDelaware and Pennsylvaniaevery year. Rowan University isgoing to be the center of theSouth Jersey region and they arelooking closely at us. They’rewatching our scrimmage hereand helping us train, and we’rehoping that they will actuallyallow us to be an official FLLqualifier next year. It would behuge for the school,” Farmersaid.Registration for the scrimmage

will start at 12:30 p.m. at WAMS.Teams will present their projectsand also do robot missions, asthey would in a real competition. This year, the FIRST FLL themeis centered around trash and re-cycling. They come up with aproject that has something to dowith trash and recycling; and fortheir mission, they will have toaccomplish different tasks cen-tered around trash and recyclingusing a robot they have createdmade of LEGO pieces.During the competition, there

will be a lot of fun things to dowhile not competing. There aremusic, raffles, concessions, re-freshments and more for partici-pants and visitors. One of the bigthings that will be going on is theFLL tradition of line dancing.“It is a rowdy, upbeat event. It

isn’t what you’d expect from abunch of smart kids into robots. It looks like a party. It is loudcheering like you would hear at asporting event,” Farmer said.Proceeds from the event will go

toward The Combustible Lemons.“STEM is the future, and that

is what this event is spreading. We always say kids are the future, and they are going to be our engi-neers and scientists who willwork to make our society better. So it is definitely good to supportthese kids and tell others aboutit,” Rebecca Rains said.
