Last week at the Moorestown TownshipCouncil meeting, township manager ScottCarew said the replacement of parking me-ters in town will most likely take place intwo phases, and the new township websiteshould be ready to be launched in May.
The first phase is to replace the parkingmeters along Main Street, and the secondphase is to get new meters in the SecondStreet parking lot, also known as the PeterPan Parking lot.
For Main Street, there is a possibilitythat kiosks could replace the individualparking meters. With the kiosks, the idea isthat each parking space would be num-bered and kiosks would be placed within a
reasonable distance from parking spaces.“The idea is to have it that, no matter
where you park, there is a kiosk on the wayyou need to walk,” Carew said.
Kiosks also allow police to use handhelddevices to hand out tickets based on acolor-coded system. Six to 10 kiosks couldreplace the town’s 80 parking meters.
The second phase in the Peter Pan park-ing lot would use the same system as theMain Street in consideration. However, there is some concern with employees hav-ing to pay for parking, which the townshipis still looking into, and is thinking aboutadding designated employee parking spotsin the area.
Carew also announced the new town-ship website would be ready to be launchedin May. He said not only will it be aestheti-
cally pleasing, but it will be efficient andeasy to use.
“It’s going to be a fantastic website,”Carew said.
He also said the township was exploringthe possibility of using a ComputerizedMaintenance Management System. Thetownship would choose a type of systemand township employees must be trainedin the use of the system. According toCarew, a CMMS would allow the townshipto keep close track of all of its assets, keepon track for schedules and make large or-ganizations efficient. He feels the organiza-tion is large enough to utilize these sys-tems.

There’s a new law being pro-posed in the Assembly thatwould require New Jersey
schools to teach students how theyshould interact with police officers. The bill is being touted as a way to pro-tect both kids and cops, in the wake of highly-publicized police shootingssuch as Michael Brown in Missouri.
Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, one of the bill’s sponsors, had some poignantwords about why he thought the bill isneeded:
“Kids have to learn how to behavewhen they’re being investigated ortalked to, because they could put them-selves in jeopardy. It’s also a good effortto protect the police. Kids have to rec-ognize their authority when they’rebeing questioned and how to conductthemselves.”
Caputo’s words might seem like he isputting the blame on the deceased kidsin cases such as Brown’s. However, hesays he’s not placing blame on anyone, rather just seeking to educate kids onsituations they may come across thatno one speaks of: “When a kid jumpsout of a car, he may appear to bethreatening but he’s not – he just may
not understand what those protocolsare.”
It’s a shame that there have beentragic situations such as those in Mis-
souri that have forced us to proposelaws such as this to protect kids andcops from dangerous situations. Butthat’s the world we live in.
Ultimately, though, we support anyprogram that educates our studentsabout life. School isn’t just about math, science, English and other “tradition-al” subjects. It’s also about preparingkids for the real world, and dealingwith police, and protection, is realworld stuff.
Education programs with police offi-cers in schools is nothing new – D.A.R.E has been around for awhile. This proposed law, which we support,is just another step in the right direc-tion to teach students how they can bebetter citizens, and how they can bet-ter interact with the men and womenwho are tasked with their protection.
in our opinion
Kids to learn how to deal with policeNew proposal w ou ld make it a requirement in schoo l, a nd it’s a good idea
Your thoughtsWhat do you think of the proposed lawthat would require schools to teach stu-dents how they should interact with policeofficers? Share your thoughts on this andother topics through a letter to the editor.

My name is Barbara Krippel, and my husband Frank and I areleaving in a few weeks on a trip tocelebrate our 30th wedding an-niversary on March 16.
In today’s standards, 30 years of a happy marriage is quite unique, but even more unique is that wehave been together since I was 13years old! No breakups, engagedat 18 and I was 20 when we mar-ried.
Frank and I met when our par-ents had seasonal campsites at acampground in Jackson. A groupof us had season passes to nearbySix Flags and while exiting thepark, waiting for parents to pick
us up, he "asked me out." I wasfrom North Jersey and he wasfrom South Jersey, so we only saweach other on weekends until hewas old enough to drive to visitme. The long distance relation-ship continued until we marriedand settled into our first and cur-rent home here in Moorestown.
We have raised our son anddaughter here and couldn’t behappier with the life we have
built together. It wasn’t alwayseasy and without challenges, butwe continued to laugh, tease, dateand have fun together.
What I would share most withyoung couples is always be sure to
communicate, laugh, surpriseeach other and go on dates. Weare never too old to be goofy!
Happy Valentine’s Day andhappy 30th anniversary to my onetrue love!

The non-profit MoorestownTheater Company received aFreddie G “Excellence In Acting”Award for its full cast at the 2015Junior Theater Festival, theworld’s largest musical theaterfestival for children, which tookplace Jan. 16 through 18 at theCobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta,Ga.
This marked the secondstraight festival at which MTC re-ceived this coveted award!
MTC’s 21 students, ages 7 to 17,were cheered on by a group of 33staff and family members as theyperformed a 15-minute version of Disney’s “My Son Pinocchio, Jr.”in front of two adjudicators:Tony-nominated composer JustinPaul and iTheatrics VP of pub-lishing, resident choreographer, and former Broadway performerSteven G. Kennedy.
Produced by NYC’s Junior The-ater Group in partnership withiTheatrics, the JTF is the world’slargest festival celebrating young
people and the “transformativepower of musical theater.” Thisyear’s festival had 4,500 students, teachers and family membersfrom 26 states and the District of Columbia, as well as companiesfrom South Korea and Australia. There were a record-high 101 the-ater companies/schools partici-pating.
MTC, which received one act-ing award in 2013 and three actingawards in 2014, also received oneindividual acting award this yearin addition to the cast actingaward, bringing its total to sixacting awards at the last three fes-tivals.
MTC’s second Freddie GAward at this year’s festival wentto Jordan Budney, 11, of CherryHill in the form of a “BroadwayJunior Slam Acting” Award. The“Broadway Junior Slam” is a the-atrical challenge in which stu-dents and teachers who don’tknow each other must stage andperform a song from a musical in
one hour.MTC producing artistic direc-
tor and Disney’s “My Son Pinoc-chio, Jr.” director Mark Morganaccepted the “Excellence InActing” Award for the entirecast for its 15-minute perform-ance.
“Just attending the Junior The-ater Festival is a wonderful expe-rience for our students, even if we don’t win any awards,” Mor-gan said. “But to win two awards, including an ‘Excellence In Act-ing’ Award for a second year in arow, is amazing, and it shows thecaliber of actors that performwith Moorestown Theater Com-pany!”
MTC was the only group of theeight in its “pod” to condense itsentire show to 15 minutes, as op-posed to just performing varioussongs from a show, which Morgansaid was done to highlight asmany cast members as possible, instead of just a few lead per-formers.

research, which is also his MFSCapstone Project, will be super-vised by Science and EngineeringDepartment chair Barb Kreider. Also, Gelernt will blog about hisprogress on Cogito.org and sub-mit a final report.
Gelernt found out about theCogito Research Award from hismother. At first, he didn’t thinkmuch of it, but after his intern-ship, he became very interestedin the heart and looking at it atthe molecular level. After doingresearch regarding heart disease,he came up with an experimentand then submitted it to Cogito.
Gelernt’s proposal is called“Effects of PON1 and ApoA-IVariants on Antioxidant Abilityof HDL.”
Gelernt will test variants of high-density lipoprotein proteins, named in his proposal title, to de-termine which are most effectivein preventing low-density lipopro-tein oxidation. HDL is known as“good cholesterol” in part be-cause it contains proteins thatprevent LDL, or “bad choles-terol,” from oxidizing. When LDLoxidizes, it forms plaque in arter-ies that restricts blood flow andcan lead to a heart attack orstroke. The knowledge he gainsfrom this experiment he hopescan be used in blood tests thatwill enable doctors to assess indi-vidual patients’ risk of develop-ing heart disease.
The hardest part for Gelerntwas crafting the application. Hesaid it can be very difficult to con-vey a complex subject in just afew paragraphs. He had to workhard to make what he wanted todo clear and to convey what he
learned.His favorite part, however, was
gaining all the knowledge he did.He said doing the background re-search was fun, but the afterwardwas the most rewarding.
“Having acquired the knowl-edge and understanding whatgoes on inside the body, to me,that is a very satisfying feeling,”Gelernt said.
When he found out he was re-ceiving the award for his experi-ment, Gelernt was excited. Hehopes his work will help have animpact in scientific research.
“I was excited. I was humbledthat I was selected to conduct re-search. I have always looked atscience and its applications. Iwanted to be a part of scientificprogress and have an impact, andfelt this was a great opportunityto be a part of this,” Gelernt said.
Gelernt won’t be starting hisexperiment until the summer.
At the moment, Gelernt’s aspi-ration is to continue in biomed-ical research, some day run hisown lab, conduct experimentsand be a part of scientificprogress in some fashion.Though that is not necessarilyset, he would like to continuedown the biomedical researchpath.
First awarded in 2014, the CTYCogito Research Awards are partof Cogito.org’s mission to fosterthe development of promisingyoung scientists and create acommunity that includes peers aswell as working scientists andmathematicians.
